"Northwest Flight 253 intelligence failure: Negligence or conspiracy?"

Food for thought. I know this will be blasted because of the source, but I find this a very interesting concept, given how Dick Cheney (especially recently) has made it his one-man mission to destroy the integrity of the Obama administration. I wonder how many of Cheney's old CIiA buddies he is still in contact with on a daily basis. I'm sure his list of "contacts" contains a plethora of "questionable" personalities from the "old days." Is it a coincidence that he was so quck to speak out about this incident, or was he just someone "in the know?"

In the five days since the abortive attempt by the 23-year-old Nigerian student Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab to detonate an explosive device onboard Northwest Flight 253, information has surfaced that indicates an ostensible breakdown in US intelligence and security that is extraordinary in both its character and scale.

Among the facts now known are the following:

Abdulmutallab’s father, a prominent retired banker and ex-government minister, had visited the US Embassy in Abuja more than a month before the attempted bombing to warn CIA officials that his son had become involved with Al Qaeda elements in Yemen. He provided them with information with which the young man could have been located, and he followed up his visit with at least two phone calls.
For at least four months, US intelligence had information from Yemen that Al Qaeda operatives there were preparing “a Nigerian” for a terrorist attack.
The information from Yemen was further substantiated by the National Security Agency’s interception of communications discussing preparations for an impending attack and the use of the “Nigerian.”

Moreover, Abdulmutallab’s $2,800 ticket was paid for with cash, apparently at the last minute, and he made the transatlantic trip having checked no luggage, carrying only a backpack . . . .

I had wondered the very same thing since it happened. I don't think Cheney or his hacks are "above" participating in a self-fulfilled prophecy.

I remember the McCain campaign saying that a terror attack would boost the campaign.

I heard Olbermann allude to this the other night, but he really didn't take it very far. I'll be watching to see if I hear him say anything else about it.

I've become accustomed to getting "blasted" lately, so hopefully I'll take the brunt of it.

This article is crap. There was no conspiracy as this article is trying to make out. Obama himself stated it was a breakdown in sharing the information.

O is investigating this, but it will be private and behind closed doors.

The article asked who are the officials? Well, no one will know because to do so will open up those agents to death threats if not death itself. Remember the agent in Maryland that died because her name was leaked?

How about reading something normal and quit with the radical conspiracy articles?

Are you really surprised that the Obama administration has created an atmosphere of negligence – from VP Biden’s Secret Service driver’s accident which resulted in a man’s death to party-crashers at the White House. The Obama administration has gotten rid of anyone with any common sense and replaced them with robots.

It is no wonder that the CIA or anyone else with intelligence-collecting jobs has taken the “CYA” battle cry as their #1 priority. The Obama Administration has already threatened to prosecute lawyers for writing opinions and CIA agents for simply following those guidelines. They have said time and time again there is “No WAR on Terror,” it is an “Overseas Contingency Operation” and “man-caused disaster.”

What is the motivation for them to do any more than the bare minimum? Do just enough to be doing your job and let the next guy get fired when something screws up. When the “bosses” do not take things seriously, no one else will.

Unfortunately, the Flight 253 was a serious of missed communications – nothing else. No conspiracy there. If the Administration gave those people more encouragement, maybe things would have been different.
