Wannabe bomber spills actionable intelligence

Cooperating.  Telling the truth.  Another nail in the coffin of that torture is vital to national security thingy.

And i just read today that he clammed up as soon - Backwards Typist

[ In Reply To ..]
as he was Mirandenized(sp). I'll have to find that article again and post it.

There is no specific date asked about when he was 'talking'. it was just a yes answer.

Don't forget, he's just a 'kid' and a scared one at that, but he doesn't know much about the world. Who knows what he was thinking when he was arrested. Now, thanks to Miranda, he supposedly clammed up immediately and refused to answer any more questions.

Getting info - NJ

[ In Reply To ..]
Think about it. Miranda would have come when he was arrested. They have gotten info out of him since then. Just maybe not on the ride to the police station.

This "war on terror" isn't going away any time soon. We need credible info to fight it, and it looks like we got some. Legally, too.

It should make you feel proud.

Not talking about that. This is breaking news, not recycled. - Some info coming from his family. nm

with providing authorities with further information regarding terrorist plots.

Oh please.. If you are talking of waterboarding, it has only been - used on a couple alleged terrorists

[ In Reply To ..]
anyway. It was used in extreme cases. Also, my uncle in the military has been waterboarded, as well as thousands of others as part of their training. So, should they sue the Govt for being tortured by their OWN Govt? Please, you should see what HE has to say about the people crying about the so-called torture called waterboarding.

266 - NJ

We know it was used 266 times on 2 guys. We don't know how often it was used on others.

Seriously, can we call if effective if it was used 266 times on the same 2 guys?

And yes, it is torture. We thought so whne we prosecuted it against Japan, in Viet Nam, and her on our own soil.

Seriously, can we call if effective if it was used 266 times on the same 2 guys?

And yes, it is torture. We thought so when we prosecuted it against Japan, in Viet Nam, and here on our own soil. We did not change our minds because Dubya said it was ok.

The ends cannot even justify the means in this case because meaningful info is not gained through torture. People will say whatever you want under torture. Professional interrogators have spoken up on this.

We don't need to be bullies to be strong.

NJ

I know you think your opinion is the only one that matters, - but I firmly disagree with you.

[ In Reply To ..]
..and we are far from bullies. I am so tired of the left acting like the USA are the bad guys.
One HUGE point you are missing here is - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Here is a perfect example that our rule of law actually works. It provides for concessions to be made to suspects when they turn on their higher ups, which serve as a strong incentive for them to spill the beans while trying to save their own skins. Psychological games can be skillfully targeted and executed without brutality, mutilation and murder.

The idea that national security can be promoted WITHOUT torture and within our own existing laws is something that all Americans should be proud of. Instead, partisans prefer to hurl "weak on terror" slams and slurs, not giving a second thought to how that message is received by radical Islamic holy warriors. That is an invitation for bolder and broader future terrorist acts for those among them destined for martyrdom. Think about it.
Which part? - NJ
[ In Reply To ..]
Did you disagree that having to waterboard 2 guys 266 times proved waterboarding was ineffective?

Or did you disagree about the part that it's torture now just like it was torture before?

Or maybe you think the ends justify the means even when the ends aren't what we wanted? No, that would make no sense at all. That can't be what you think.

Maybe you don't think bullies torture their victims. Is that it?

Just wondering if you have a point because your post was unclear on it.

Oh, wait...you were just saying NO to my post, right? Ok, I got it now ^^

Torture is not vital, but honestly 6 weeks is a significant lapse - Liberty

[ In Reply To ..]
"Maybe, but this is still no way to run a railroad. In this case we have gotten really, really lucky. But what have we missed in the six weeks since Christmas? Actionable intelligence is timely intelligence.

Al Qaeda has now had plenty of time to cover Abdulmutallab’s tracks, to move out those who attended suicide bombers school with him, to close down safe houses, bank accounts, ditch cell phones, destroy computers, etc., etc.

Interrogators should have been questioned him immediately -- his responses should have been carefully examined by a team of experts in real time, compared with what they already knew.

And then he should have been questioned again -- probed for still more details. We could have directed intelligence operatives to check out his leads, and connect dots that we may have missed. This process should have gone on for weeks and months. We could have had a shot at taking down the entire Al Qaeda Yemeni network.

If he’s talking now -- great. But the fact is, as we've sadly learned since the foiled attack over Detroit on Chistmas Day, there was no system in place, top intelligence officials were kept out of the loop, the elite team that was supposed to be formed to deal with high value suspects was not even organized (and this took place over the course of a year!) – and it still hasn’t been.

Politically, the administration has gotten lucky this time around, and at the White House they are no doubt expressing a giant "phew."

But the Obama administration continues to see terrorists as isolated extremists and lone wolfs; they continue to treat them as civilian criminals rather than enemy combatants.

And now, with out top two intelligence officials warning there will definitely be another attempted terrorist attack by July there is no indication the problem has been fixed."

You are overlooking one teeny-tiny detail here... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
How much actionable intelligence has been gleaned in less than 6 weeks from detainees, especially the ones who were tortured? How valuable were all the false confessions and red herrings they threw out to spite, distract and mislead their captors?

How much more MIGHT HAVE BEEN elicited had we been walking the walk and talking the talk with rule of law? How many fewer recruits would have been so eager to join the holy mission had the HATE FACTOR been diminshed, say by 15%, 30%, 50% or more? How many other terrorist attacks that ensued over those years could have been intercepted or prevented?

Guess we will all have to sit here and ponder a while over that.

Nice strawman. Both of you. - Liberty

[ In Reply To ..]
Stay on topic. We are discussing this particular terrorist.
Youre the one who started your subject line with - the word torture....
[ In Reply To ..]
This dodge and admonishment suggests you have no answers to any questions posed. The points raised in the reply are EXACTLY what this is all about. We are not talking about a specific terrorist. This is about torture versus the rule of law. That is the underlying partisan reparte, is it not? Being coy isn't working. Please using a direct answer.

Note is taken of the thinly veiled disguise of the - Fox news source. sm

Don't you have anything else better to do than sitting around trying to whip up a bunchof hysteria about an imminent terror attack?
