Narrative education...because some need exposure
Posted: Jul 2, 2017
This is fairly long, takes 5 minutes, but it is needed.
Immediately after the election...
He and Musarrat talked about what to do. He began investigating a job in Dubai. He spoke to his brother in Florida, an investment adviser, who had received a fax after the election that read, “Get the f--- out of my country you Muslim pig,” and was moving to Canada. Musarrat kept thinking about the time after Sept. 11 when a man had chased her with a baseball bat, yelling about her headscarf.
So he began to try to heal people, which is what his job is....
But that’s not what we’re talking about,” he said. “Because if you say, ‘That’s Islam,’ then that’s like me saying, ‘Well, Christianity is David Koresh,’ ” he said, referring to the cult leader.
He began pacing a bit. People were listening.
“Do you guys know who the LRA is?” he said, referring to the Lord’s Resistance Army, the cultish Ugandan rebel group blamed for the deaths of more than 100,000 people. “How many of you knew about that? I want you to raise your hands.”
Two hands went up.
“How come you don’t know about that?” Ayaz said. “How come only Islam has terrorism? The KKK had 5 million members in the 1920s. Lynching of black people was normal. It was routine. Why don’t we look at ourselves, too, as well as others? You have alternative facts? Then go to a different lecture.”
No one was getting up to leave.
“So, the purpose of today is to know one another,” Ayaz continued, going back to the outline.
He quoted Koran verses to explain how there is no compulsion to convert people to Islam, how extremists who believe that “hate me more than they hate you,” and how Islam means peace, and soon, he began to veer.
“So Islam is not what you see on TV, okay?” he said. “I know Fox News. It’s not news. It’s the WWF, okay? Don’t use them as my spokesperson. When you say, ‘These people are animals and we have to blow them up,’ don’t say, ‘This is Islam.’ It’s not. And 99.9 percent of us will agree we need to condemn these people and it hurts us even more because they’re saying that God said this? Muhammad said this? Never in a million years.”
I hope this man stays...I hope his efforts continue to touch all of you.

Try living in Dearborn, MI, for 2 weeks.
I have and what's your point? It's a heavy - Muslim populated area
[ In Reply To ..]
There are lots of stores and restaurants with Arabic food and their names in Arabic. I also worked at the police station and most of the crimes committed were performed by people coming out of Detroit, not the Muslims. Do you remember Hamtramck? That was a highly populated Polish area. There were stores and restaurants that served Polish food and storefronts with their names in Polish. Did you complain about that?
Point is that they mostly DON'T assimilate. - SM

Yes, I remember Hamtramck. After the gays cleaned up and renovated the area, the Muslims moved in and are now taking over that city as well. Are you wearing a hijab now?
If you are a liberal, we will never agree so let's just stop this right here and now. I don't want to hear your point of view because I do not agree with it and you will not want to hear mine. Goodbye
OMG ..your 1% moved out with death of auto industry - AboveThat

(Which they killed to make more money abroad...such proud Americans you are)...and next wave of immigrants moved in (it was Polish, auto industry died, most left) and Muslins moved in, and you object to them having their own representation in city govmt? Or what? Guess it was good thing you weren't around when the Poles moved in.
It appears you are very ignorant about Wayne County, MI. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Wayne County was a true melting pot because of the car industry. People came from all over the world to work for the Big Three. Everyone got along. Everyone had one main goal: The American Dream. The "Muslins," as you put it, don't have that goal. They don't assimilate.
P.S. I'm Polish.
Sorry for the typo...phone.. - AboveThat

But, regardless of whether you are Polish, point is that auto industry died (Poles were example) everybody of consequence moved out. Muslims made this into a community....apparently not one that your people like. Why do your people get to decide? There have been little Italies, Chinatowns, German areas, Polish areas....now Muslim areas. I get that you live near there so you have feels for discriminating more. But, you need to take a step back and let people live their lives.
It would be very interesting if you could give some real societal incidents that have been a problem. Please not isolated incidents of violence by one or another.
If you actually live there - AboveThat

My observation would be that you are unhappy with the change and are blaming the wrong people. The auto industry left you.
I have same problem in my neighborhood. It has turned more rental....with the attendant problems of unsaleable/unwanted properties going rental. I can move and give the neighborhood up, I can blame the different parts of society that move in, or I can understand that capitalism moved on.
For your viewing pleasure... - AboveThat2

And I would say you believe anything fed to you by ostrich news networks.
My first reaction to your source youtube was, What in the world kind of protest were the Christians with the block lettered shirts? Turns out it was Arabfest and this guy Israel has shown up to incite violence before. Oh, how christian of him.
Too bad you fall for these discriminatory stories. We have had similar reactions to Westboro Christians in my town
...good riddance to them.
I no longer live there. - sm

My husband's job took us elsewhere years ago.
I know about the "societal incidents" and I don't have to prove anything to you. If you want to educate yourself, I suggest you do so on your own. I am not here to educate you.
I am very familiar with Wayne County - That county went downhill
[ In Reply To ..]
long before the Muslims moved in. White flight destroyed that area, not Muslims. Auto industry left, whites flocked to the suburbs and Detroit became a predominantly black city while the suburbs were white. Drug dealers took over that city which caused the crime to go up and more businesses to leave. Blacks started moving to the suburbs to get away from the crime and find jobs.
Back when Orville Hubbard was Mayor of Dearborn, he was very racist and kept the blacks out. There was a small area in East Dearborn that was Muslim. That area grew because Muslims migrated there. They now are a big part of Dearborn and opened businesses that reflect their food choices and clothing types. Crime pours in from Detroit because that city has been taken over by drug dealers and prostitutes and there are not a lot of places for good hardworking black people to work and live. Same thing happened to Hamtramck.
I'm also Polish and that has nothing to do with anything.
You're recollection of events is a bit skewed, but - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I'll leave it at that. You have your opinions. I have mine. "White flight," as you so eloquently wrote, occurred NOT because of the auto industry leaving. Goodness gracious, please learn the truth.
White flight had nothing to do with - Muslims, please learn the truth. nm

No kidding there, eh? - sm

You win a gold star for that truth, but your other statements are erroneous.
No they aren't. I grew up there and saw - what happened.

Yes, your statements are wrong. - I grew up there, too.

I'm done. Learn is all I can suggest go you. Bye.
You started off blaming the Muslims for the - downfall of Wayne County
[ In Reply To ..]
They weren't and you even seemed to agree, so what in the heck are you trying to point out? I know what happened to Wayne County but apparently you don't. The only thing you said is they don't assimilate. What do you mean by that? They live in the city, open businesses, practice their religion. They just don't dress like you and look like you. That is all I can figure.
No I'm not wearing a hijab but I don't try to - tell people what to wear
[ In Reply To ..]
I've heard where many of the Muslim women prefer dressing like they do because they don't like men checking them out like many of the women in this country like to by walking down the streets half naked.
I'm not talking about terrorists, I'm talking about Muslims. If you are a rightie, you think we should all be white and wear what you think we should wear and practice what religion or lack of religion you practice.
Do you think it was fine that we shoved the Indians off their land and forced them to be like us too. After reading your post, I'm sure you probably do.
