Betsy DeVos is the new Secretary of Education

Posted: Feb 7, 2017

Dems wasted their time for the 24 hours against her. I'd also like to know since when is a filibuster a "talkathon?" It was always a filibuster before. They blocked the voting process yesterday and spoke all night and into this morning before the vote.

Again, DeVos made it with VP Pence's vote to break the tie.  i find the Dems to be quite disgusting but at least they're showing their true colors, backed by the Teacher's Unions. Too bad they care more for the votes instead of the voters. The thousands of phone calls to Congress against DeVos were no doubt from teachers and their representatives.

Maybe quality education will happen now. I certainly hope so. It's time to put the kids first instead of teacher's paychecks. If the teachers don't like it, they an always find another occupation.

I'm so - happy

We now have another billionaire who has no experience in the position she have. She seemed also to know little about education. I'm glad you're happy though.

For me, I don't think it's good - anonymouse

[ In Reply To ..]
I watched her hearing and have read about her subsequent letter explaining her gaffe on the IDEA. I do not think she has the experience we need to really help our kids. I am all for bringing in people who are not career politicians, but I would feel better with someone who has more experience in education than just someone who is a proponent of school vouchers and charter schools. My son is a junior in high school, thank goodness, but he is on an IEP under IDEA because of severe ADD inattentive type and executive function issues. I have fought the regular system since he was in 4th grade to get what he needs and it has paid off. He has been in public school and I probably would not have moved him to a different school anyway. I am glad he is almost done and this woman will not have time to change things for him, but I do think that it needs to be someone who knows what they are doing. To me, this appointment should not be about Republicans versus Democrats winning, but about the future of our children. Sometimes just taking the party line is not the best for all Americans and I think these people in government forget that.

Never thought I would say this... - sm

I don't give a rip about her good or bad. Thanks to all the ridiculous and time-wasting posturing by the so-called adults in congress, the violence and riots by the Soros-funded radical lunatics and the politics spouted off by the Hollywood talking empty heads, I am now 100% for anything the Republicans do. Anything. The democrats will soon have caused a loss of democracy because NO ONE in their right mind is going to vote for them in 2018 for all the shenanigans they've pulled.

Maybe - you

[ In Reply To ..]
don't care but most people who have kids care. What a thing to say.

Did you stop and think - that democrats

[ In Reply To ..]
didn't want her because she isn't qualified? With statements like this we'll see who votes for who in 2018.

She's not qualified according to whom? - Person to whom you responded.

[ In Reply To ..]
Democrats? Too bad. I don't care about them anymore.

Like the poster below stated, she's for charter schools. Also, unions don't like her. I don't like unions. Anyone unions don't like, I like.

seat at the table, kinda like when Obama passed Obamacare with no Republican votes. Karma is a you know what, but come on 2018. Hurry!
I bet if they try to vote out - Obamacare

you'll see a different vote. Not that this has anything to do with Devos, but since you bring it up......

Well, those sure are - great
[ In Reply To ..]
reasons to vote her in. Forget that she seemed tripped up on education in the interview and has no experience. I certainly care about education for kids whether their parents are democrat or republican.

I like her. She's not in the pockets of the teachers unions - etc. She is for charter schools.

So we can - have

teachers making minimum wage. Then they'll probably have to get supplements from welfare to survive. We know how much the right loves welfare. You folks may not like the union but if we didn't have unions we'd all be in the poor house. Even if you're not in a union, union wages keep nonunion wages up.

Sorry, but I don't think that will happen. I'm tired of the (sm) - Jack

unions. Seems crappy teachers can't get fired. They need to take a test of some kind. Besides, I think the education dept should be done away with and it should be run by each state. Teachers making $75,000 a year, IMO is a bit much.
Wow, I never - knew a
[ In Reply To ..]
teacher that made that much. Not saying you are wrong, I just never knew any. Must depend on district or something, you think?
It must depend on where they teach - anonon
[ In Reply To ..]
because here in New Mexico the ones who have taught for many years are only getting paid about $56,000 a year and they have to keep up their education on their own money as well as certifications. Many of them buy extra supplies for their classrooms out of pocket to make sure all kids have what they need. I think teachers are way underpaid considering how much they do for our kids. I am not saying there are not some bad teachers, but for the most part the ones I have worked with because of my own kids in school are awesome people who do it just because they love what they do and not for the money. I feel like both teachers and first responders are the most underpaid and under-appreciated professionals in the world.

Charter schools - you bet - All of us should pay for the upper class/charter/p

[ In Reply To ..]
After all, we are all Americans and the education of children benefits us all. So what if our middle class taxes are paying for the upper middle class to have vouchers so that they can send their kids to private or charter schools? It's really for the best since the children of the upper class will grow up to run this country. They will need the best education possible to govern the rest of us who were not so fortunate.

I thought America was where everybody could - be president? Not just the upper class

[ In Reply To ..]
Sounds to me like your argument is that we should gratefully accept our kids get not so great educations and get no money directed at their schools so that the rich ones who will eventually rule us get a good education for free?

Is that right? Because I really don't think that's the way this country is supposed to go. That's why public schools are a great equalizer.

"They will need the best education possible to govern the rest of us who were not so fortunate."????

We were not so fortunate because instead of our tax dollars going to our kids' schools they were being shoved upward for the vouchers so rich kids can get a great education and govern us?

Sorry, this just sounds like you are advocating for a ruling class paid for by us serfs, and IMHO that is not what this country should stand for, not in education, not in anything.

Or are you joking? Honestly, sometimes I don't catch on too quickly, but it does seem like you may be joking. Please enlighten me.
Babe, I was joking - But I like your response
[ In Reply To ..]
I've got to tell you that based on my life experience and that of my middle-class friends with kids, that the Horatio Alger story of rags to riches, anybody can be President, etc. is really part of the American past. It's not impossible, but it is now the exception to the rule. There is really nothing we in the 99% can do about the 1% running this country because there is just so much inherited wealth, and I don't mean Donald Trump-type wealth. Most of the truly truly rich keep a very low profile. But I do think with more people who feel as you do that there are exceptions and with more people like you we could perhaps give the rich a run for their money. Literally.
Thanks for clearing that up, but good public schools - is not necessarily rags to riches
[ In Reply To ..]
Frankly, I am the product of a public school, and I think I had an excellent education. I just never had the desire for riches (wish I did actually).

But education is something different. I believe it makes everyone better to be educated, not left wing or right wing, just truth wing. I think Barack Obama was not a rich kid, he certainly went to some public schools along the way, and he became president against all the odds, so yes, I think that chance is still there. Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine went to public school, and even Donald Trump went to a public elementary school I believe (until he became a behavior problem by all accounts...).

Now, everything I hear about charter schools, which is apparently DeVos' thing, is confusing to me. They're good, they're bad, they're ripping off poor kids, they're good for poor kids. It's almost like they made this thing intentionally confusing so we couldn't figure it out, right?

If anyone understands that public vs. private charter school vs. public school issues that are going on and maybe have lived through it, by all means, I am willing to listen and would like to try to have a better understanding of this.

It sounds like Michigan is kind of a mess as far as those charter schools, and aren't they a result of her free market philosophy? I really think she is not qualified for the job. It sets a dangerous precedent when big money donors are given positions of power and are so obviously unqualified.

Another thing I wonder about is the disabled kids. I am hearing concern from parents about programs that have helped their kids now being in danger.
What I know - anonon
[ In Reply To ..]
Here in New Mexico we have almost 100 charter schools. They take more public money per student, but their test scores are not any higher than the regular public schools. Some of them have been closed over the last few years for mismanagement of the money also. I believe choice is good, but like anything else it all depends on the actual school administrators and the teacher the child has.

My niece works at a charter school in a bad neighborhood in - Chicago. Why should families like

[ In Reply To ..]
the Obamas and the rich only have access to better schools?

Hallelujiah! Poor kids will now get a choice to leave their - ROTTEN SCHOOLS.

[ In Reply To ..]
Of all the cabinet choices that Democrats SHOULD have supported, this is the one.

...except for the crappy teachers unions that they're beholden to. You know - the ones that have failed teachers sitting in empty rooms while they continue to collect their salaries.

One of the first things Obama did in office was to get rid - of vouchers for charter schools in D.C.

[ In Reply To ..]
He was in the pockets of the teacher's unions. Guess they don't want poor kids to have choices.

She is unqualified - Resist

as is Ben Carson but the Republicans will just confirm everyone. It's disgusting!
