NJ Gov. Christie Vetoes PP Funding

Posted: Feb 10, 2011

Long time responder, first time poster on this board.  I've got NJA again and finding myself bored.  Anyhow, this has a bee in my bonnet for a variety of different reasons.

New Jersey Gov. Christie Vetoes Planned Parenthood Funding

Last week anti abortion radicals revealed a heavily edited film that they claimed showed a staffer at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, advising a pimp on how to obtain abortion services for his underage prostitutes. As ABC notes, while that video's provenance is yet to be proven, the staffer in question has been fired by Planned Parenthood.

Although Live Action films purported to have sent undercover teams to several different Planned Parenthood clinics across the country, they were only able to find one single staffer whose words they could edit into their propaganda video. Unfortunately, as Fox News reports, though, it seems that that single video may have been enough to cause an unpleasant ripple effect for New Jersey's women.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie used the crest of anti abortion sentiment to justify his veto of a bill that would have provided funding for Planned Parenthood in New Jersey. The bill, proposed by Democrat lawmakers in New Jersey, would have included funding for Pap smears, counseling, and other non-abortion services provided by the non-profit organization.

When Governor Christie was elected in 2009, he did not indicate to the voters in New Jersey that he was against providing women with access to safe and legal abortions. Later, the Catholic lawmaker made it clear that he was personally against abortion, but would not move to legislate abortion.

According to the Gutmacher Institute, which tracks abortion and birth control access in the U.S. and abroad, New Jersey is currently one of the friendliest states for women. There are no parental notification, ultrasound, or other requirements. Just a couple weeks ago, it seems that Christie has changed his mind.

Governor Christie spoke with anti abortion proponents outside the New Jersey State House in Trenton during their rally on the 38th anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision. He told them that they have an "ally" in him. His presence threw into question his previous decisions to cut finding to Planned Parenthood, and made it clear that his decision to veto Bill A273, which would have expanded Medicaid funding to cover low income women seeking family planning services, was his way of forcing his anti abortion beliefs on the women living in New Jersey.

The Star-Ledger has reported that Christie claimed that his veto of Bill A273 was for budgetary reasons. Although last year his veto saved the State of New Jersey only $7.5 million, this veto is even more questionable. Governor Christie's refusal to allocate only $1.1 million for low income women to access non-abortion family planning services meant forgoing more than $15 million in federal Medicare and Medicaid funding.

That would make abortion illegal if there is a heartbeat detected, which means, I'm guessing, that an ultrasound will be mandatory before an abortion can be performed.

I know Planned Parenthood provides more services than just abortions, but there are also free health clinics and county health departments that also perform yearly exams and prescriptions for birth control for those who can't afford to see an OB/GYN.

I don't believe that tax dollars should be spent paying for women to have abortions. I think women have a right to choose to have an abortion, but I also believe that I have the right to choose not to pay for it.

I totally agree with you. - sm

I'm against abortion but if one chooses to have one...it should be on their dime...not mine. I am 100% against my tax dollars going towards the murder of defenseless babies.

I find it rather ironic that many feel that a woman has a right to choose whether or not they keep their baby or terminate the pregnancy and yet the same people have a problem with those of use who choose to NOT want our money funding this.

I can relate... - no1joe

to both you and Zville. I'm pro-choice; however, I can relate to the same idea on a different level. I am 100% anti death penalty, and the thought of my tax dollars potentially contributing to the process goes very much against something that I and many others strongly believe in. I can understand your frustration.

However, even though I am pro-choice, I think folks on both sides of the fence can come to agreement on 1 thing... we're both anti-abortion. Pro-choice does NOT mean promoting abortion. I believe in a woman's right to choose, but the ultimate goal should be to prevent abortion through education and reproductive health care. Cutting off funding to PP, one of the leaders in providing such services at low to no cost, is like cutting of your nose to spite your face.

On a completely different level, this is an MT site, so I'm guessing that most people who come on here are involved somehow in the MT field. We know a thing or 2 about patient privacy, right? So, how is it that someone can go into a medical provider's office and FILM what is going on? Really? If I don't shred a piece of paper that says that "John Doe" was seen by "Dr. John Smith" on such-and-such date (we're required to shred patient schedules), I'm committing a HIPAA violation, but some clown can pose as a patient and video phone the goings on inside a medical office? And if you watch the video, you see him drop the recording device, and there's also edited footage. Makes me wonder if anyone in the waiting room was captured on film. IMO, a crackdown on video/picture phones or recording equipment used by the general public inside medical facilities needs to happen. It just seems wrong to me.
I'm with you on the death penalty, too. - Zville MT

It's mind-boggling to think of all the things that our taxes pay for that they were never intended to pay for, abortions and executions being only two of the many. In many cases, we don't even know where our money is going or what it's being used for - recent events in Egypt have proven that.

There has to be a line drawn somewhere - many states have gotten rid of the death penalty, so why not for places that take federal money to perform abortions? Both cases involve the taking of a life, something everyone has a strong opinion on, one way or another.

I also see your point about videos in a medical office - definitely could result in a HIPPA violation. If these places perform abortions on young girls without any kind of parental notification, how would they know if those girls are involved in prostitution? That's were the crackdown needs to be on that end.

probably stupid me, but what's NJA?/nm - duh

It's all over the news and internet. If this does in fact turn out to be accurate and he did know about the clsoure, this is more proof as noted by the poster below that both sides lie. It's a sad fact of life. That said, Christie was never my GOP frontrunner, but I do hope this doesn't ruin him for good. Obamacare Funding Running Low For Patients Feb 16, 2013
Tens of thousands of Americans who cannot get health insurance because of preexisting medical problems will be blocked from a program designed to help them because funding is running low. Obama administration officials said Friday that the state-based “high-risk pools” set up under the 2010 health-care law will be closed to new applicants as soon as Saturday and no later than March 2, depending on the state. But they stressed that coverage for about 100,000 people who are now enrolled ...
