More weirdness about the making of the "film" that...sm

started the whole mess.  Lots of information coming out now.

was the "movie" in question. My take on it? At best it would be like a C or D rated ridiculously poor attempt at comedy. Whatever the message is supposed to be is incoherent. Considering a lot of videos on YouTube, I don't think this one in particular really stands out as what I would call the worst I've seen against any religion. The whole thing is just laughable because its so bad.

So, I really don't think this is enough to really cause the outrage we're seeing. There has to be something more than this. Just sayin.

Of course there's more. It was 9/11, and they hate us. - What more do you need? (sm)

Except for maybe Obama's failed policies and milquetoast approach to the mideast. The know he is a wuss.

For starters, the mere act of depicting the Prophet - is considered blasphemous to devout Moslems

[ In Reply To ..]
Other elements that set this film apart from what you view as bad "comedy" are:

1. Terry Jones declared an "International Judge Mohammad Day...." the same guy who sat in judgment of the Quran, then burned it.

2. Characterized Moslems as thieving, plundering, bloodthirsty, violent terrorists.

3. Called their prophet an "illegitimate bastard."

4. Depiction as a womanizing philanderer.

5. Depiction of their prophet and his followers as homosexuals and child molesters.

6. Showed the prophet having sex with his wife and with other women.

7. Makes references to the "false" genesis of the Quran....implicitly calling their prophet a liar.

8. Is based on the premise that Mohammad is a hypocrite.

Anyone familiar with the teachings and practice of the faith would have no trouble identifying the breadth and totality of the insults contained in this film and how its release could have provided a stage (for) and/or provoked these various horrible repercussions being played out across the region. Of particular importance is consideration of the the role of its major source of funding, consulting, production and promoting....Terry Jones. It would be impossible for even the most casual of Moslems to view this piece of trash as a "joke."

Right...I understand all that....sm - JTBB

but there is a whole lot worse than even that out there on the internet, so why target this one? In particular, its my understanding they thought this was a mainstream movie and would be shown nationwide in the US. You can't tell me they haven't seen mainstream movies (good movies, well produced) and didn't notice the difference.
The Arabic-dubbed trailer identified Terry Jones role and - featured the most inflammatory parts
[ In Reply To ..]
It doesn't matter that Jones intended this to be "satire." It matters that this particular person, who had the utter gall to sit in judgment of their prophet, was involved in the film's production (the full version of which was not dubbed and is for the most part irrelevant to the insult). The trailer has been out there since July, and has had plenty of time to be noticed and condemned by local, provincial and national religious leaders across the region, as well as reported in local news sources.

It is very common in Moslem countries, especially ones where state repression of freedom of speech and press are enforced, for Friday mosque services to be accompanied by a healthy dose of politics, both in the sermons delivered and in the after-service social gatherings. You'd be surprised at how fast word travels back to the communities and into the homes after Friday prayers, DESPITE the state's best efforts to suppress it. Also, the youth of these countries are adept in hacking into western social media sources even under the strictest kinds of national censorship, such as is the case in Iran, for example.

I am not trying to say militant groups did not take advantage of the INTENTIONAL 9/11 timing, which Jones has exploited before. What I am saying is that for Moslems, the outrage is real and severe enough to have spawned all kinds of different expressions of protests....organized or not. Jones has intentionally defiled two FUNDAMENTAL tenets of the faith: The Book and the Prophet.

I also think the Islamic sense of Umma, or Moslem community, is essential to understanding how this social phenomenon has unfolded whereby, regardless of regional or national differences between them (or in what part of the world they live in, for that matter) an attack on Islam is an attack on them all. This transcends national identity. The political transitions occurring in the Arab Spring nations where evolving democracies are searching for their individual identities has, to some degree, confused this concept, at least in the short term, which I think helps explain the differences between how opposition to this ungodly film has played out. Some of those countries are still under strict security and have had better luck than others in terms of preserving their national sanctity and warding off the intrusion of outside fundies intent on destroying these democratic processes and plastering the entire region with a monolithic Islamic theocracy. Each individual nation has its own history and traditions to preserve vis-a-vis that impossible undertaking, so these folks have A LOT on their plate these days.

From a diverse nation of 300 million +, my question is why agitators chose - this of all the insults to Islam available? SM

[ In Reply To ..]
It's not about this little piece of trash film. It's about troublemakers who separate the world into good people (always themselves), enemies to be destroyed, and those who can be ignored.

The people behind this film AND the Islamist agitators who chose it as a tool are troublemakers in the most literal sense.

So, BTW, are many U.S. citizens who belong to churches that teach that Islam must be destroyed, Jerusalem taken by those of their own faith, and the Muslims thrown out, etc. We just don't tend to think of our own nice people chatting and smiling as they leave church that way, but these days their message spreads around the globe and is taken by millions for the profound insult to their faith and dangerous threat that it is.

I am also trying to wrap my brain around who...sm - VTMT

is responsible and what was the motive and expected outcome?! It sounds all very sinister to me. I am thinking someone who wants to make it look like the Israelis are responsible, and it also has links to Christian extremist elements too. Whoever is responsible is either totally unhinged or gaining in some way or....? Either way, we are all in danger at the hand of this lunatic. The repercussions are turning out to be enormous, actually helping AQ and the extremists in the end. Sorry for rambling on.

I agree. In all mysteries it's always smart to question who would - benefit and how. NM

Great Idea For A SNL Skit: Ryan, Family, And Film Crew Barge Uninvited IntoOct 16, 2012
take over the sink area, don aprons, "wash" a pot while photos are shot, then split. I'd say you can't make this stuff up, but of course SNL could--if it wasn't real. Who'd get to play the ticked-off charity director and who the bumfuzzled volunteers, I wonder? But, really, why on earth did Ryan's campaign do this? It was an unannounced stop. Just a stray streak of brilliance that wowed them all temporarily? (Maybe similar to what became Obama's first-debate strateg ...

Making A WillAug 12, 2010
How many of you have set aside time to make your final wishes known?  I kept saying I was going to do it, and today at least I have written in a tablet all vital information my family needs to know, phone numbers, bank info, etc.  Money is so limited, but I want to have a formal will done very soon. I saw firsthand what confusion comes of not letting people know simple things.  There are so many details, and I am going to make things as easy on everyone as possible.  I ...

I have been very careful with my daughter and her husband.  I do not pry and do not give advice unless I am asked.  I am careful to say, "Do you think..." or "I wonder....."  Sometimes my daughter comes to me with their problems and I am quick to say, "You guys need to discuss this, or maybe "This is none of my business," or "I should not be commenting on this."  This has served me well and my daughter and I are very close even though she is busy with small children and ...

Does Anyone Have Any Experience Making Jul 04, 2012
I got interested in this after hearing a radio show about fermented foods and the recipe seemed simple, cabbage, salt, let  it sit out for 4 weeks or so and there you have it.  My cabbage has been sitting out for a couple of weeks now and is actually sort of looking like the sauerkraut you get in the cans.  Has anyone ever made this, eaten it and lived to tell the tale?  Thanks and happy 4th!  ...

Making My Own CalendarsJan 02, 2013
Does anybody else make their own calendars?  I normally would go out and buy 5 to 6 calendars (cheap ones from the dollar stores), but this year I am just feeling creative.  I actually got out my digital camera, which I have had for 4 years and never used, and started taking pictures of my cats and would like to try printing calendar pages and hanging them around the house instead of the store-bought ones.  Any idea what software to use?  I tried HP photo creations, came with ...
