Jonathan Gruber and Obamacare

Posted: Nov 14, 2014

The MSM is not covering this, but please google it, if you haven't heard about it.  Nancy's  "We have to pass it to see what's in it" has now become Jonathan Gruber's "Basically call it the stupidity of the American voter or whatever, but basically that was really, really critical to getting the thing to pass."  In order for Obamacare to work, there had to be all kinds of hidden parts that the people would not like, so "the people" had to be kept in the dark in order to get it through.

I also got an explanation for why Romneycare from Massachusetts works and Obamacare doesn't.  Ted Kennedy was responsible for getting about $400,000,000 a year from the federal government for "slush funds" and this money was used to cover the welfare recipients (Medicaid) under Romneycare, which then made state healthcare work in Massachusetts.  The same plan would not work on a federal level because there is nowhere for the "slush fund" money to come from (unless you tax the people with mandates and the tax on medical equipment in order to come up with the money - so if the mandate falls and the medical equipment tax fall, Obamacare will not be able to stand on its own.....

The "architect" - behind Obamacare

[ In Reply To ..]
Yesterday, Nancy Pelosi said she has never heard of the guy, but she has to be more careful - soon they were showing a video from around 2010 in which she quoted him - by name - and said he is the brains behind Obamacare - Oh, Nancy - be careful what you say when the cameras are rolling....

An independent contractor who set up RomneyCare - sm

From what I see, just another guy who was making "off the cuff" remarks regarding that they had to be very careful in how the law was written so as not to confuse people.

The sound byte people have found a new sound byte.

Gruber most certainly did not "set up" Romneycare - which was, by the way, very different from Ocare.

(Sigh) Echoes of the liberal lies told about Romney during the 2012 presidential campaign. They painted him as a "flip-flopper" on universal healthcare, when in fact he was opposed to the manner in which Obamacare went at it, which was very different from what was done in Massachusetts.

Even liberal media (e.g. The New Yorker, Bostom Globe etc praised Romney for the way that he achieved the goal in his state - which was a COLLABORATION between liberals, conservatives, business and labor, and which DID NOT involve a takeover of the healthcare industry of the state.

Gruber's role was a fairly minor advisory one compared to his role in Obamacare - and most of his suggestions were rejected in Massachusetts.

I do wish people on this forum would check their facts rather than swallowing the party line.

How are the laws different?
Size and scope – The Massachusetts law applies to the 6.5 million residents of the commonwealth. The ACA covers more than 300 million people spread across 50 diverse states. Massachusetts began its reform with a rate of uninsured that was half that of the nation as a whole, and it was written to meet the unique needs of state residents. These differences led Governor Mitt Romney to oppose the ACA. While Romney’s health reform is working in Massachusetts, he believes one model cannot meet the needs of all 50 states. In addition, the ACA has a much broader scope in that it includes provisions to address healthcare provider shortages, increase wellness and nutrition programs, bolster community health centers, and adjust Medicaid and Medicare.
Cost sharing for preventative services – The ACA requires insurance policies cover preventative services, such as cancer screenings, with no co-pays or deductibles. This provision is designed to promote wellness and diagnose disease in its earliest stages. The Massachusetts law allowed insurers to require co-pays for these services.
Medicaid expansion – In Massachusetts, Medicaid was expanded for children, parents, pregnant women and the long-term unemployed. Under the ACA, states have the option of expanding the Medicaid program to all families and Individuals with incomes up to 138 percent* of the FPL. The District of Columbia and 25 states are currently planning to exercise this option.

ABC news reports:

"MIT economist Jonathan Gruber may not have been a household name, at least before this week, despite his being described as the “architect” of Obamacare and, previously, Romneycare in Massachusetts.

Here’s what you need to know about He’s an MIT economics professor famous for his critical role in advising the Obama administration on the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. He’s known as the “architect,” although Democrats involved with the law’s passage take issue with the title.

Before Obamacare, he also advised the creation of a similar law in Massachusetts, sometimes called Romneycare, after Mitt Romney, who was governor of the Bay State . . ."
You take ABC's comments much too far. - I believe I said he was an adviser.

...but only one among many, many advisers. Romneycare was crafted with the input of all kinds of entities, unlike Obamacare.

Obamacare Meltdown Has Arrived. Tennessee Is Ground Zero For Obamacare'sOct 07, 2016
last month the state insurance commissioner, Julie Mix McPeak, approved premium increases of up to 62% in a bid to save the exchange set up under the Affordable Care Act. “I would characterize the exchange market in Tennessee as very near collapse,” she said. Obamacare Is Failing From Behind... His Goals For ObamacareJul 20, 2016
1) Have it collapse so that single payer can be implemented amidst the ensuing chaos. 2) Have that happen on somebody else’s watch. Obamacare was designed to fail so the Democrats could “reform” it with complete government provided socialized medicine. That is the entire purpose for it. Obamacare is designed to collapse so they can backfill the vacuum with government run socialized medicine. Eventually, everyone will be on some form of Medicare. I believe that was one of Bernie’ ...

So this is what I have learned.   After listening about the new health insurance, this is what I know. There are 3 levels of care/cost. Well after listening to a question and answer discussion on line program coming out of Sioux Falls, South Dakota hospital systems, it scared me greatly. When discussing the ACA or Obamacare, whichever you call it, remember that it is literally like comparing apples and oranges (and grapes, pineapple and maybe even potatoes).  Each state has different prices and different plans from the federal plan.  Some states now have only one company offering a plan through their state exchange.  Each plan has a different monthly cost, a different deductable and it goes on and on and on.  The requirements are different from state to state ...
