John McCain sneaks into Syria. Why?

It's called a sneak visa for a high ranking US official - on a stealth mission
[ In Reply To ..]
With stated goal of meeting with rebel leaders, sneaking is the only way to enter from the north into regional rebel-held strongholds. It's a gutsy move. I'll give him that much.
Now as for the mission, I suspect the goals there are not particularly lofty, though I do not really question McCain's sincerity in his concern over the dire situation and its implications:
1. An unchecked genocidal dictatorship whose history of brutality and majority repression spans more than 4 decades after seizing power via bloody coup.
2. Evidence suggesting the presence of red-line chemical weapons facilities.
3. Two years worth of carnage that has produced 70,000 fatalities, and an estimated 1,208,315 refugees throughout the Middle East and Northern Africa.
4. Escalating pressure from the international community.
5. Participation by Hezbollah, Al Qaeda, Iranian and other outside terrorist forces in support of the regime.
6. Recent expansion into neighboring Lebanon and the threat of regional expansion and escalation of the conflict.
This mission is entirely consistent with his past behavior. Hawkish to the bone when it comes to the US military's role on the international stage and always willing to rise to the occasion whenever an opportunity emerges to create a high-profile showdown with the Obama administration aimed at either challenging or opposing existing policies in the most visible manner possible.
I suspect what's at the bottom of this is Russia's change in position from recalcitrant support of Assad toward more willingness to engage in peace talks unfavorable to the regimen. Meanwhile, John Kerry has been holding meetings with the Russian Prime Minister and voicing his support of a $4 billion dollar World Economic Forum international investment initiative to help Palestine's economy. IMO, that's just more peace diplomacy than McCain can tolerate....God forbid if the dems actually succeed in making progress on that front.
Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran 2013 style. This time they are conveniently situated in Syria alongside their Hezbollah beneficiaries.

President Speaking Now On SyriaAug 30, 2013The unclassified report shows the chemical weapons were used by Assad. He has not made a final decision. He is not considering any open-ended or military action that involves boots-on-the-ground but will be a limited, narrow act that would help make sure that Syria and others around the world know that using chemical weapons are not acceptable.
You'll have to look up newspaper reports. I don't know if there's any as of yet.

It would also give Iran and Syria access to missles being able to hit our allies since Iran's missles wo ...
