Hagel says Syria has used chemical weapons

Posted: Apr 25, 2013

Now what will Obama do? Syria crossed the line that Obama drew. President Obama has said the verified use of chemical weapons by the regime would be a "red line" and a "game-changer" for U.S. and international military intervention in the Syrian civil war. Syria has been stockpiling chemical weapons and reports indicate it has sarin, tabun, along with mustard gas and hydrogen cyanide. A 2011 CIA report said Syria was also developing the potent nerve agent VX, which could render a city uninhabitable for days.

Will Obama decide to send troops or drones into Syria without congressional approval like he did with Libya? Don't get hyper, either, about the words "troops and drones." We all know he didn't send troops into Libya. I'm not talking about Libya in that sense.

Hagel says Syria has used chemical weapons

Hagel, speaking to reporters in Abu Dhabi, said the White House has informed two senators by letter that, within the past day, "our intelligence community does assess, with varying degrees of confidence, that the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons on a small scale in Syria, specifically, the chemical agent sarin."

"It violates every convention of warfare," Hagel said.

No information was made public on what quantity of chemical weapons might have been used, or when or what casualties might have resulted.

President Barack Obama has said the use of chemical weapons would be a "game-changer" in the U.S. position on intervening in the Syrian civil war, and the letter to Congress reiterates that the use or transfer of chemical weapons in Syria is a "red line for the United States." However, the letter also hints that a broad U.S. response is not imminent.

sounds kind of wishy-washy to me. I really hope we don't make combat decisions based on "some degree of varying confidence." :/

By hook or by crook the hawks are gonna get boots on the ground again in the Middle East. Maybe the BofDs of Halliburton aren't able to make their Lexus payments? Or send their kids to Ivy League schools to become venture capitalists. I agree though, I pray the American people don't buy into "some degree of varying confidence" . . . again :-(

Well, if that's the case, it will be - Truthhurts

on the part of the Democrats in the Senate, now won't it (since they are in the majority)? Won't be able to blame Bush for that one.

If Halliburton would get a contract, can't blame it on Cheney either. It would all be on the Democrats.

You really literally make no sense to me. Please don't respond to my posts anymore. Just let me be the one you ignore, okay? Thanks.

It sounds like you all agree on the important points. That's a good thing. People are important, not parties. We're all in this together, no matter which party screws up. :)

Obama will do nothing except spew and spout - - like he always does.

(ABC News) Outgoing Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel acknowledged Friday for the first time that some officials in the White House disagreed with his slow pace in releasing Guantanamo detainees. The unclassified report shows the chemical weapons were used by Assad. He has not made a final decision. He is not  considering any open-ended or military action that involves boots-on-the-ground but will be a limited, narrow act that would help make sure that Syria and others around the world know that using chemical weapons are not acceptable. Syria: Oil Prices Vs Wall StreetAug 29, 2013
That September drop you were expecting for gasoline prices? Don't hold your breath. Currently, gasoline averages $3.55 a gallon nationally, down from $3.63 a month ago. Most analysts had expected a drop to about $3.40 by early fall on seasonal demand slumping following the summer driving season. Not now. Some forecasters predict a short-term spike of up to 10 cents a gallon. Crude oil prices and gas futures are soaring on growing fears that if the U.S. military strikes at Syria for its h ...
