It's time for reconciliation

Posted: Jan 19, 2010

I am very, very disappointed in the "race" Coakley ran. She seemed to be sitting on Kennedy's laurels, and she ended up dropping the ball. This is an opportunity for the dems, though. It's time to pass Health Care Reform by reconciliation.

If I had a magic wand, I'd move Pelosi to Senate majority leader to be sure we'd git 'er done.

Long overdue, if you ask me. - sm

Better bill, public option, real choice and competition with the health insurance corps. Yes indeed. Looks better than ramming it through before minus-one goes to DC. Senate bill makes it look like he's already arrived.

does the fact that the majority do not want it mean nothing to you? Do you think it would be okay for them to push this bill through without the requisite number of votes? The loss of this Dem seat in Massachusetts should send a message loud and clear. The democratic party would do well to listen to it or they will lose far more as reconciliation flies in the face of everything the process SHOULD be. Personally if I had a magic wand I would get rid of Pelosi entirely as she is a disgrace

I am so with you! ...We should do what the majority of - Americans want, and they

dont want this reform! If dems are so arrogant to keep pushing this junk through without approval of the majority, they will all lose their jobs soon!.. Get it through your head, dems! --and if Pelosi is who the dems admire, ugghh..

might ought to take into consideration the percentage of those who no longer support it because it does not go far enough. Majority support for public option and real competition for the health insurance companies to deal with was ignored by Blue Dogs, the GOP, conservatives, campaign lobbyist beneficiaries, those who caved to the strong-arm tactics and misinformation and went the way of bipartisan consensus building.

If you extract those who supported these MIA measures from the disapproval ratings, your claims do not hold up. Reconciliation is the only way to get the majority support lost in the shuffle back on the table.

Don't you worry. Pelosi has something up her sleeve - backwards typist

She is promising it will get done anyway. What a coniving B. I hope California wakes up.

Just for fun, I put Olbermann on this morning and he was as ignorant as ever. He stated he had an apology to make to Brown and then went into a rant about him.

Already they are throwing Coakley under the bus as they did with VA and NJ dems that didn't win.

I think part of the problem is that, ironically, (sm) - Nikki

that the people in Massachusetts already have a healthcare plan that is working for them, and I don't think they wanted to lose that coverage and participate in the badly written healthcare "reform" bill. This is ironic because it may result in the rest of us NEVER having had the opportunity for relief from insurance company costs.

I'm not so sure Pelosi can pull anything out of her sleeve at this point, and I agree that Democrats are throwing her under the bus, but maybe she deserves to be under that bus. To me, she came across as arrogant in assuming she could win this election with both hands tied behind her back.

The House plan is favorable to American citizens. I've checked out that little gadget posted on here to try to estimate how much I would be paying under the Senate bill and the House bill and compare them. This is based on income, and the Senate bill hurts the least of us well before the House bill does. You should play with that link and place different incomes in there, compare House and Senate bills, and you should see what I'm talking about.

I tried using the gadget but since I don't know what - Backwards Typist

what our taxable income is, it's hard to do. It always came up more than what I'm paying now with the new plan I have but this new plan is not as good as the old one. Copays are higher, percentages of what they pay are lower, and RX copays are higher.

Let's look at the numbers. - $$

"Third, the program is not affordable for many individuals and families. For middle-income people not qualifying for state-subsidized health insurance, costs are too high for even skimpy coverage. For an individual earning $31,213, the cheapest plan can cost $9,872 in premiums and out-of-pocket payments. Low-income residents, previously eligible for free care, have insurance policies requiring unaffordable copayments for office visits and medications.

Fourth, the costs of the reform for the state have been formidable. Spending for the Commonwealth Care subsidized program has doubled, from $630 million in 2007 to an estimated $1.3 billion for 2009, which is not sustainable.

Fifth, reform does not assure access to care. High-deductible plans that have additional out-of-pocket expenses can result in many people not using their insurance when they are sick. In my practice of child and adolescent psychiatry, a parent told me last week that she had a decrease in her job hours, could not afford the $30 copayment for treatment sessions for her adolescent, and decided to meet much less frequently.

In another case, a divorced mother stopped treatment for her son because the father had changed insurance, leaving them with an unaffordable deductible. And at Cambridge Health Alliance, doctors and nurses have cared for patients who, unable to afford the new copayments, were forced to interrupt care for HIV and even cancers that could be treated with chemotherapy.

Access to care is also affected by the uneven distribution of healthcare dollars between primary and specialty care, and between community hospitals and tertiary care hospitals. Partners HealthCare, which includes two major tertiary care hospitals in Boston, was able to negotiate a secret agreement with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts to be paid 30 percent more for their services than other providers in the state, contributing to an increase in healthcare costs for Massachusetts, which are already the highest per person in the world. Agreements that tilt spending toward tertiary care threaten the viability of community hospitals and health centers that provide a safety net for the uninsured and underinsured."

Every one of them has serious flaws, either of character, personality, world view, experience, or philosophy - and in most cases more than one of these - that I simply cannot stomach. In my experience, it's always a choice between the lesser of two evils, but this election cycle seems to have brought out a spectacularly miserable collection of candidates.  And yes, Sanders and Trump supporters, I mean them too - or perhaps especially them too.
