So in 1970 the SAAS occupied an empty ROTC building - to get it renamed

[ In Reply To ..]
and their successor group's conveniently deleted web page claimed they had to be armed to demand the name change, which incidentally did happen? News accounts at the time did not mention any weapons? Given the times, had there been any weapons involved, they would have called out the National Guard and it would have dominated the airways for days and days. Did not happen.

You think the powers that be at Columbia would have caved to an armed revolt at an empty campus building? Do you have any idea how ridiculous this article is and how desperate it makes anyone look who is trying to make this an issue 42 years later? Seriously?

So, it doesn't matter if it happened or not - kr

when you weren't a college student unless you engaged in protests of one kind or another.

In 1970 I was a part time college student in my junior year....part time because of the amount of time I devoted to student political activism. Student sit-ins, strikes, demonstrations, marches, occupations, etc. in protest of military presence on campus were as common as college frat parties since those were Viet Nam draft years, and the invasion of Cambodia escalated those activities to a high pitch. Occupation of college buildings and general strikes were effective, not only in getting attention on the issues, but also in engaging college administrations in negotiations in search of resolution of the problems. The Columbia University general student strikes predated Kent State by nearly two years.

Most of these activities were simple attempts to keep military recruiting OFF CAMPUS, which in my view was a rather humble request, considering the times and the circumstances. This SAAS incident occurred the same year the Kent State University shootings happened (May 1970). That year and for several years after, police "security" policies were highly militarized. In addition to the escalation of the war, calling out the national guard to gain "control" of these events (by killing 4, wounding 9 and permanently paralyzing one of them) was a tactic that ultimately caused the radicalization of college students.

For those reasons, I have NO DOUBT WHATSOEVER that, if the SAAS folks in that empty ROTC building had been armed, there would be a treasure trove full of newspaper accounts of how the law enforcement and military took care of the problem, so I'll say it again.

It. Never. Happened.

And that's not all - I heard he...

more name calling, personal insults and the like in response to posts!!!! It is childish, silly and makes it miserable for everyone else here on the board.  I get on here some days and scan just the subject lines and am just floored!  How about WE ALL grow up and act like adults and refrain from the above.  No more responding with one-liners, insults about intelligence or sarcasm just because we disagree with someone else.  Frankly, this forum has sunk pretty low due to posts ...

Is The President Mentally Ill Or Is He A Radical?Oct 10, 2013
Why is this president so Radical! Taking a page out of Saul Alinsky‘s “Rules for Radicals,” the plan is to maximize the people’s pain — to maximize the political damage to the enemy, the Republican Party. What else explains it? Here are just some of the tactics and rules set by Alinsky that Obama, Pelosi and Reid go by. They all must keep copies of Rules for Radicals in their desks. If you ever read Rules For Radicals it's like reading the handbook that they must read. The ...

The Democrats' Rising Star. A Look At The RadicalJul 29, 2017
As House and Senate Democrats press forward with their quest to destroy Donald Trump's presidency by any means necessary, they are simultaneously focused on finding someone in their ranks who could be an effective presidential candidate for their own party in 2020. Fifty-three-year-old Kamala Harris, who served as the Attorney General of California from 2011-16 and then filled the vacant U.S. Senate seat that had been occupied for a quarter-century by Barbara Boxer, is someone whom they wil ...

Comparing Tea Party Movement To Radical LeftMar 08, 2010
Article by David Brooks thought provoking.  He presents a compelling argument that the tea partiers are copying the same tactics as the  70s radicals.  Like anyone thought the conservatives could come up with anything new or different . . . although now that dick armey has praised Alinsky, those one-note posters here will need to put a new string on their violin playing "oh the country is being destroyed by the liberals."  To read article just google his name- it is ...

Radical Left Oregon Official Who Fined Christian Bakery Into ShuttingNov 15, 2016
Commissioner of the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries Brad Avakian gained infamy when he fined a Christian bakery with $135,000 for refusing to bake a wedding cake for a lesbian couple. The owners of the bakery, Aaron and Melissa Klein, turned down baking a cake to a lesbian couple as it would violate their Christian beliefs.
