How much more can we hear about this hurricane named Irene?

Posted: Aug 27, 2011

I am sure everyone has or is preparing.

A question I have is right before all heck breaks loose should I shut off the computer along with the router or should I just shut down the computer. I do have a powerstrip with my electronics plugged in. I will have my ipod all charged up in case I need to listen to my songs or play games on it.

What else you can do to minimize damage?

;

I would shut down computer and unplog powerstrip - from wall

Lightening may not happen, but I'd have any power source to the computer disconnected. AND if close to a window, move to a dry spot ;-)

STAY SAFE!!

I would turn off each piece - sm

then unplug the power strip from the wall. Also disconnect your internet connection. Thats what I do when a thunderstorm is approaching here. Also unplug the washer, dryer, and microwave. When everyone is home for the duration unplug the garage door opener. When the power goes out unplug the TV.

Yes, I'm a little paranoid about electrical damage from storms. But I've lost a tv and a washing machine to lightning. I knew someone who lost a computer to lightning.

Was someone with a doctorate who informed the audience that your freezer is colder than your refrigerator. He also rattled off a list of what seemed to be VERY obvious foods that could be safely consumed in the event of a power outage (bread, peanut butter, etc), oh, and most of all, reminded everyone their electric can openers wouldn't work.

I changed the channel at that point. Seriously, anybody could have given out the common sense information that guy was providing. And they probably paid him quite well to appear. *eye roll*

Both of my employers are going to be hit by this storm, one is supposed to be hit hard, so those of us in unaffected areas are being asked to pitch in and do extra as a great deal of the MTs are right in the line of fire.

Hope everyone fares okay.

Common sense - or lack thereof

You'd be amazed at how many people don't think about stuff like that. What is common sense to you might be something completely unthought of for someone else. I used to work in a 12-story hotel. We had a power outage from a car striking a transformer pole. Everyone was calling the front desk to find out what was going on (the PBX had its own power system and still worked) and a question I got more than once was "can I still use the elevator."

Uh, yeah, sure. Give it a shot.

Lots of things are common sense, but I think some people are so used to using an electric can opener, it might not dawn on them that it's electric!!! I think it's a good reminder to households that aren't used to being without power.

I'm a manual can opener gal myself. Hate counter clutter, so I'm good to go with the cans.

I always wondered why they said to fill up the bathtubs, but I figured it out when I tried to flush the toilet...

I don't think we can ever be too prepared.

just for info, or common sense as well....cell phones will not work either, so don't be expecting to speak to relatives/friends during the storm...not gonna happen.

go through before every storm. The ENDLESS talking heads saying the same thing over and over and over again, the endless position reports. The stations in FL are STILL reporting on Irene frequently, it's almost like they want her to turn around and come back so they'll have an excuse to have their faces on air.

Yes, unplug everything and turn off central air if you have. In fact, once the power starts flickering, we turn off the main circuit breaker to the house during the storm itself. Then, once the storm is gone, we'll turn the main back on and turn on a light switch so we'll know when power is back. Reason for this is sometimes there are power surges when it comes back on and you don't want to blow your a/c, fridge, etc.

And I'll agree with the other FL poster, you don't think about your can opener until it comes time to open cans. When our electric one died, we just started using the old-fashioned kind anyway since we had it on hand for storms. Some people also don't think about needing paper plates, plastic forks, etc cause you might not have potable water either.

Too funny - merrymt

I'm out in the midwest, so never had to go through a hurricane. However, we've had the blizzards, and storms, and resulting power outages. Anyway, I was watching the news and the reporter was at the grocery in NC interviewing people stocking up. A woman in the background had 4 gallons of milk in her cart! 4 gallons of milk! Really? It was too funny. I mean seriously, even assuming you have a generator, you're going to stock up with a product you Know has to be kept cold?

Former President Bill Clinton took a swipe Tuesday at Mitt Romney's position on climate change in the aftermath of the landfall of Hurricane Sandy, saying that President Obama's policies were better for the environment. "In the real world, Barack Obama’s policies work better," Clinton said at a campaign rally in Minnesota. Clinton said that Romney mocked Obama's position on climate change during the first presidential debate, although the topic didn't come up. "He ri ...
