Did you hear the one about the 2-year-old that shot

Posted: Jan 1, 2015

No it's not a joke. Really happened. Ok, so you figure lacking intelligence would come into play. No, mommy was a nuclear physicist. People just don't need to carry guns. We demand people wear seat belts, but they can legally carry and let their kid kill me at Wal-mart. ;

I can't understand why anyone would carry - a LOADED GUN into a Walmart.

[ In Reply To ..]
Even if she had training, a special gun-purse, and yada-yada, even bringing it in there alone was foolhardy, especially since it was loaded. Setting that purse within reach of a 2-year-old? Insane. That child could have killed any other innocent person nearby, or himself.

This takes that old "People of Walmart" meme to a frightening level.

Actually she was a scientist/researcher - One dumb move can

[ In Reply To ..]
ruin/take a life.

Well, there's book-learnin', and then there's - good old common sense.

[ In Reply To ..]
Sometimes the latter of the two will be the one that gets you farther in life.

I can't understand why anyone would go to WalMart without a - loaded gun.

[ In Reply To ..]
Taken a good look at the "people of WalMart" recently? Do you follow any of the news reports about the crimes that are committed at WalMarts with considerable regularity - many of them violent and/or sexually assaultive?

WalMart is as safe as anywhere else - nm

If true, Q.E.D. If not true, Q.E.D. - Thank you.

Got logic?

If I felt Walmart or anyplace else were as - dangerous as you describe, -

[ In Reply To ..]
I would simply avoid going there. That in turn would negate the "need" for a gun.

Also, I feel that walking into a store with a loaded gun automatically makes that place more dangerous than all the store weirdos and parking lot perverts put together.

That was a tragic accident, but yes, sometimes people - do need to carry conceiled

[ In Reply To ..]
First, it was a stupid move on her point not to have it locked. Second it was a stupid mistake to let her child get into her purse. Terrible consequences she paid for that mistake.

But we don't know what her situation was. Was she being stalked? She felt she needed protection.

Sometimes there are reasons why people need to carry a concealed weapon and that is why there are laws allowing it.

The law should not be changed, not everyone is as irresponsible as she is. They should not have to suffer because of her stupid mistake.

Stalked in a Hayden Idaho Walmart among hundreds - in broad daylight?

[ In Reply To ..]
Not to say there are a few dangerous around around those parts, Hayden being the former Aryan Nation HQ and Northern Idaho enjoying its KKK revival after the Aryan disbanded. Don't think they typically target white gun lovers much though. They've got bigger fish to fry.

Linked article paints a different story. According to a close friend of the mom, “In Idaho, we don’t have to worry about a lot of crime and things like that,” she said. “And to see someone with a gun isn’t bizarre. [Veronica] wasn’t carrying a gun because she felt unsafe. She was carrying a gun because she was raised around guns. This was just a horrible accident.”

Seems to me the only one "suffering" the consequences is that 2-year-old, who will be raised without a mom and later on have to learn how to live with the fallout.

Try the search I've provided in the text of this post. - There is plenty of crime in Idaho.

[ In Reply To ..]
...including, yes, at WalMarts.

Here's your search:

crime idaho walmart -toddler -2-year-old -mom -mother

The terms with minus signs in front of them are filters so you don't have to deal with a jillion stories about the "toddler shoots mom" incident.
Absolutely ridiculous to carry a loaded - gun in WalMart
[ In Reply To ..]
People need to get a grip. Turn off the inflammatory/inciting news. It is just not that dangerous. There is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON FOR HER TO CARRY A GUN and the stupidity of letting her toddler anywhere near it is indefensible. As some would say PERIOD.
It is not ridiculous at all. What is ridiculous is (sm) - LM
[ In Reply To ..]
having it somewhere where a toddler or any other child can get at it. That is what is ridiculous.
Oops. Never said there isn't post should be - here. nm

[ In Reply To ..]
don't carry a gun. If it's late at night, then I carry pepper spray. Just as effective, without the permanence or the potential jail time.
Lived on South Side of Chicago-- - Dad wanted me to carry
[ In Reply To ..]
I told him that whoever attacked would just take it away from me and shoot me. Still believe that to this day, that more guns in the equation is not the answer.

BTW, smart decisions, not going out alone, late at night, et cetera, kept me safe...not a gun. I was also advised as a young college student to carry $20 with me at all times, so as to have something to give the criminal--that it might just save my life. I never had to offer that $20 and didn't always carry it, but it would be a small price to pay, if it had happened. (It was also said the same for the Chicago cops, in case they pulled you over, that $20 and your license would prevent a ticket--never tried that either.)

As to needing a gun at Wal-Mart, or any other average, normal daytime activity, is a completely random need, and just as likely to result in an unfortunate accident (as stated above), as it is in the actual accomplished necessity of carrying a gun. Unfortunately, (and seemingly pretty well ignored) we hardly ever hear of the hero with the gun at the Wal-Mart, or in the living room, or the bedroom. Occasionally, someone gets the "satisfaction" of shooting an intruder.

We hear about the "accidents" all the time. The "accidents" are preventable, by guns not being on our person or in our homes.

Never said there isn't, but the victim's close friend's message - was pretty clear

on the subject:

"[Veronica] wasn’t carrying a gun because she felt unsafe. She was carrying a gun because she was raised around guns."

I tend to put more credence in folks who knew her than folks who didn't. Her state is currently ranked the 45th most dangerous state in the country, or the 5th safest, depending on how you look at it, and Hayden didn't even make the cut on the city/town listings. That said, it is her son who will suffer the consequences of her parents' passion for guns for the rest of his life. It made the toddler's seat in a common shopping cart the most dangerous place on earth for that kid.
Ever notice how often a person who either - murders someone or is killed - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
by their own gun turns out to be someone who was "raised around guns?" That seems to be a big part of what's wrong with this country. Maybe people shouldn't be raising kids around guns.

No I haven't noticed that. That's not the case every time - nm
[ In Reply To ..]
But it sure was the case this time. - Three questions.
[ In Reply To ..]
How do you think a 2-year-old knew enough about guns to wrap his tiny fingers around the trigger and squeeze it until it discharged? Why would he be that curious about the one he obviously saw him mom put in the pouch of that purse she put within arm's length directly next to him in the trolley seat? How is it possible that relatives and other gun owners can call that "responsible" gun ownership with a straight face?

Regardless of what might've been going on - in her life, a crowded store - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
is NOT the place to carry a weapon, and certainly not to fire one.

Yes, it is the place. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
If someone is being stalked, or even if not stalked, just plain ol abducted in parking lots, which happens, yes wherever a person goes if they feel they need protection it is the right place to have it. I mean she can't just leave it with the Walmart greeter and then pick it up on her way out.

If a person has a concealed carry I feel perfectly safe. The only mistake this lady made was that she let her son reach into her purse. She was a smart lady and responsible enough to carry a weapon, but not smart enough to be watching her kid.
And being a gun-toter who doesn't watch her - kid, she puts all shoppers in danger.
[ In Reply To ..]
Protecting yourself shouldn't carry the price of putting innocent lives in danger.
No, it's not. It's a public department store. - Walmart is not a gun range.

Where was the good guy with a gun that would have stopped this terrible thing from happening?

True Account Of 16-year-old Teen Shot At BorderNov 26, 2012
Below is an "AP" article discussing the death of a 16-year-old at the Mexican border previously discussed in posts below.  The incident actually occurred on October 10, 2012. I also agree it is horrific that a 16-year-old lost his life under any circumstances.  Unfortunately, if you read the article, the incident was not iniated because of rock throwing, but rather because a truck load of narcotics was abandoned by two individuals and the individuals were running back to Mexico.&n ...

2-year-old Kentucky Girl Accidentally Killed By Her 5-year-old Brother May 01, 2013
"A 2-year-old Kentucky girl was accidentally killed by her 5-year-old brother who fired a rifle he had been given as a gift, officials said Wednesday." Parents can be arrested for not reporting a missing child. It's not even legal to let your child drive a car without a permit. Yet, this sad, sad story is unfortunately way too common. We MUST start holding adults accountable for guns in the home. ...

10 Reasons Not To Get The Flu ShotOct 27, 2010
The verdict is out on flu shots. Many medical experts now agree it is more important to protect yourself and your family from the flu vaccine than the flu itself. Let’s take a look at the reasons behind this verdict: 1.) There is a total lack of real evidence that young children even benefit from flu shots.  A systematic review of 51 studies involving 260,000 children age 6 to 23 months found no evidence that the flu vaccine is any more effective than a placebo. Also the shots are on ...
