I wish the US would dump the party system...

Posted: Dec 22, 2010

Nothing ever gets done - all that ever happens on Capital Hill is the Dems and the Pubs fight, and try to derail each other's ideas, bills, etc.  There has just got to be a better way.  The elections need an overhaul, as well.  No sooner are politicians elected to office (in EITHER party!), than they're already campaigning for re-election.  Or for more of their party's seats in Congress.  Etc. etc.  No bill that is enacted ever stays up for long, it's usually repealed by the other side before it can ever do any good.  It's just the same old thing, year in and year out.  Meanwhile, America is circling the drain.

;

Agreed! Another example of a good idea gone bad... - corrupted by money and power

[ In Reply To ..]
and wanting more of both. The noble idea of public service has died and been replaced by self-service to the extreme.

Most of the people who run for state or federal - office are already rich - they have to be, (sm)

[ In Reply To ..]
in order to afford to campaign. I think to begin with, all public office should come with NO PAY. That right there would get rid of a lot of the riff-raff in government.

Wow! I was just reading about DADT, START, and the 9/11 - and was thinking--FINALLY!

[ In Reply To ..]
I was truly sick of it too, and all of a sudden I was so happy that it looks as if something might finally be getting done.

IMO, this has only gotten bad in the last few years - Backwards Typist

[ In Reply To ..]
I used to watch CSpan before, but not like I do lately. There used to be debates and either the bill passed or it didn't. There used to be compromises, but now that's rare. They fight tooth and nail over every little thing.

Since the internet and all the "opinion" pieces and bloggers, it has really gotten bad. I think Congress reads the above items and that's a part of the problem.

It doesn't help when the President never tried to intervene and calm things down like other presidents did. He sat back and let it get this bad I think the shellacking in November woke him up a bit. He is, right now, holding a news conference stating he looks forward to hearing from both sides of the aisle on the items that did not pass yet.

His hope for the future is to heed the voice of the American people....and to that, I say 'bout time'.

No, he tried to meet with pubs and all they - did was delay and filibuster

[ In Reply To ..]
The pubs looked so bad, they had to bend a little. The whole attitude of "Obama must fail" was clear from day 1 after the election. All the crazy death panel, birther, Muslim/religion claims trumped up nonsense is obvious evidence of that.

What a crock. Obama is failing on his own... - without any help from the "pubs."

[ In Reply To ..]
Even his own party in DC don't much like him anymore.

What you and other Dems don't seem to get (and it actually may be penetrating Obama's skull, we'll see) is that the midterm elections signaled the American people want to see a change in DC...we are concerned about the debt and concerned about SPENDING. Until the "pubs" as you call them put their foot down and said no more rubber stamp spending, he HAD to negotiate with them if he wanted things done, and even HE was not stupid enough (although some of his party WERE) to let unemployment expire, etc., so he compromised. Which is what he said he was going to do while he was running for President...yet another campaign lie, would not have done it this time if he had not lost the majority in both houses of Congress in a landslide shellacking.

What is it about that that Democrats don't understand?? If they don't get it, 2012 is going to be worse than the midterms.

Here's hoping you continue not to get it. lol.
He's not failing at all. In fact, he's accomplished - quite a bit in this lame duck Congress.nm
[ In Reply To ..]
nm
Well, the pubs may not have helped him...but they - sure helped we the people.
[ In Reply To ..]
they managed to get the spending bills paid for in a way other than taxation, with no help in that from the Democrats. Even as a Democrat you MUST realize that we cannot keep going on this crazy spending binge. You should be glad that ANYONE (pub or Dem) is interested in stopping that, and why you aren't baffles me. I just do not get this party before country thing...just do not understand it.
oh sure, accomplished a lot more debt is all !!! nm - Please

There are alternatives to the two-party system in use worlwide.

It doesn't mean we have to give up democracy or independence for goodness sake.

It has never been this bad before....and if you... - think otherwise, we should

rename you Rebecca and ship you off to Sunnybrook Farm.

What do you think will happen if a few of our "friends" over in Europe get together and decide to devalue the American dollar?

It will get real ugly real fast, and an urban center is NOT where I would want to live if that should happen.

excuse me? - rebecca

First of all, I was simply remarking that the pitfalls of the two-party system are well known and have been for a long time. In other words, it's not news.

Secondly, what on earth does the American two-party system have to do with Europe devaluing the dollar, for goodness sake??

Talk about getting ugly real fast...

I was specifically replying to the Geo Washington - post...nothing in that
[ In Reply To ..]
post about the two-party system. "It" can be broadly interpreted, and I interpreted "it" to be the country. I was not commenting on the two-party system but the state the country ("it") is in. Sorry if I jumped the thread. I did not mean to, nor did I mean to offend you. Hope you have a good Christmas!
thanks...merry christmas - : )

that was sweet of you.

Umm, I guess I saw different things regarding President Obama. I have always heard him say he wants ideas from the republicans but they want it their way or the highway. I am not sticking up for the democrats either. Both parties need to be done away with and there needs to be just one party; the one that is for the people not themselves and their friends.

I don't hear anything now that is the "voice of the American people." It is still the same-ole, same-ole if you ask me.

Some people seem to think that things are going to get so much better now that the republicans are in. NOT! It is just the same old thing with different faces. You wait until next election. People will be crying we need to get rid of those republicans and put the democrats in. If President Obama gets voted out for a republican, in a year people will be saying we need a new president. It never changes with this 2-party system.

You are always going to have people crying - either way because

[ In Reply To ..]
people expect different things from the government. When you have a democrats in the majority, a lot of the American's who are democrats are happy with this as their expectations are being met and why republicans are upset because they believe right the opposite and vice versa. That is why you have different parties. Obviously, it will always be separate parties as you have people who feel very strongly on how our money should be used among other issues. I actually think we need different parties to level out.

When candidates are separated out into parties, I have a good idea of which way they are going to vote which to me is a good thing.
The way this discussion degenerated into a Pub vs Dem - argument is exactly why the party system - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
needs to be canned. Because that's all that ever happens in government anymore. It all degenerates into a party-vs-party power struggle that ends up in nothing of any importance ever getting done.

No wonder this country is no longer moving forward, and on most days, only backwards. I don't want to vote for a candidate in a rigid party system. I want to vote for the man or woman with the best ideas, not the one with the most vociferous political party.

Question: Why Do You Think Americans Are (generally) Willing To Accept A Two-party System?Jul 29, 2013
Here's the reason for my question:  The two-party system is, and has been corrupt for a long time. In a country where you can have a choice of about 35 different types of salad dressing but only two viable choices for the highest office in the land, I just find it is stunning that Americans are willing to stand for this. Answer how you will, but I am hoping the discussion goes past slamming any one president or party and more towards how we as a nation have largely been manipulated in ...

Fraud In Health Care SystemMar 13, 2010
It is estimated that there is at least 100 billion dollars health care fraud annually.  There are truly needy people and they should be helped.  But there are also many people who don't have health insurance because they just do not want to pay premiums, use their money for other things instead, when they could pay and are able to pay.  This is just not right and this needs to be stopped, and that should make a dent in health care costs.  Why not go after the health care ...
