California to get high-speed rail funds others rejected.

Posted: Dec 10, 2010

California's high-speed rail plan will receive up to $624 million in additional federal funds, Transportation Department officials announced Thursday.

The new funding adds to the $715 million in federal funds previously awarded to California. It arrives courtesy of Ohio and Wisconsin, two states where recently elected Republican governors decided not to accept their own allotment of high-speed rail dollars.

"I am pleased that so many other states are enthusiastic about the additional support they are receiving to help bring America's high-speed rail network to life," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood declared in a written statement.

LaHood's redistribution of an additional $1.195 billion in high-speed rail funding provoked cheers among lawmakers who had been lobbying for a bigger slice, but regret among some Midwesterners who saw their own money slip away.

California's two Democratic senators, Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, had both urged LaHood last month to provide additional funding once it became clear Ohio and Wisconsin would forgo their potential share.

"No other state is as ready, as able, or as determined to develop a high-speed rail system in the near future," Feinstein stated.

Boxer added that the new funding is "great news for California, which has made a strong commitment to high-speed rail and the jobs it creates."

Transportation Department and state officials are still negotiating their grant agreements, which will spell out details of the funding including the final amounts.

We will be happy to take any money that the Republicans want to refuse while they cut off their noses to spite their faces. That gives California mo money, mo money, mo money, and mo jobs, mo jobs, mo jobs!

One state's ignorance is another state's bliss! Just make those checks out to the Beautiful Blue State of California!

To quote your link...

"The California high-speed rail plan calls for an 800-mile system from Sacramento to San Diego, running through the Central Valley. Administrators are focusing on the main phase--a 520-mile span from the San Francisco Bay area to the Los Angeles/Anaheim area, set to be constructed and in operation by 2020. Trains would eventually reach speeds up to 220 mph -- far faster than any existing passenger trains in the U.S., and rivaling those in Europe and China."

"Roelof van Ark, chief executive of the California High Speed Rail Authority, said the Central Valley link will be the "backbone" of a system and will also serve as a testing ground for high-speed locomotives. He said it is easier to start in the less-developed Central Valley because construction and engineering work are less expensive there than in urban areas and there are fewer landowners with whom to negotiate. Supporters also say the project will bring jobs to an area with high unemployment and will spur development there."

Please note that in order to get from San Francisco to Los Angeles, you have to travel through the Central Valley. That means the high-speed rail must be built in remote areas in order to get from point A to point B.

You need to read and comprehend the links you post without pulling a few sentences out of context in an effort to twist the facts to fit your agenda.

Not that incorrect "cut off their nose" thing again - see message and see link

And once again it is used incorrectly.

Both Ohio and Wisconsin have been hit hard by the economic downturn. They asked to have the money diverted to other projects that they need more.

In Ohio they asked that the 400M for other more needy service projects like road construction and freight lines. Evidently they don't need a high speed rail there. If being stubborn means standing up to the democrats and telling them the money is needed for other projects more, then I say we need more of that stubborness. They felt the money would be a waste of tax payer dollars.

Wisconsin is still getting 2M for a railroad line.

But it doesn't surprise me that democrats take money away from republican governors and give it to democrats.

And your cut off their nose statement is being overused and incorrectly.

"mo money"??? What, from his stash?

Not the previous poster, but I agree with the - choice of idiom

Definitely fits.

Assuming the republican govs did not know that the money could not be diverted..(kinda sad), and were told no, that they couldn't use it for other things, was it then taken away just because they asked if it could be used for other things?

Looks like they said no even after they found out it couldn't be used for other things.

That project would have meant a lot of jobs, and....I live at one end of the railway line and my family at the other. I most certainly would have used it frequently.

What a shame.

You just don't get it. - sm

As your link pointed out, the law stipulated that the money was only to be used for high-speed rail. The purpose of high-speed rail is to reduce the number of automobiles on the highways that are polluting our environment and keeping us dependent on foreign oil.

For the governor of Ohio to ask that the money be used for more roads is ridiculous and defeats the intent of the law. The governors who refused the money have done their states a great disservice and are acting like little children throwing tantrums. Their loss is our gain!
Yeah, right, CA knows what they are doing, NOT. - Bankrupt state.. lol.. pathetic.
[ In Reply To ..]
Ohio knows the rail will fail here, so the Governor was trying to do the right thing by turning it down to prevent a total waste of money and use the money productively. You can build a rail system here, create jobs, but eventually lose it all because it will not be profitable in Ohio. So, go ahead California, show your greedy ignorance once again, waste more money, and go further into the toilet. Glad I dont live there.

anymore. You people just keep complaining that your state is going under, which it is, yet keep making the same ignorant decisions over and over.. its too sad to be funny. At least Ohio came to its senses, finally.

You people need to make up your minds. Didn't I read a post recently from someone complaining about the high unemployment rate in Ohio? The fact that your relatives cannot afford to live in California is not my problem and no reflection upon this great state.
I used to live in CA. It is not the great state it used to be - Couldn't wait to leave the madness

We tried it twice. Lived there, moved away. Then we moved back a second time and could only take 4 years of that before we realized there were more places that were better. Too liberal for our liking and too many liberal politicians making too many bad and stupid mistakes and not learning from their mistakes the first time. Goodbye CA forever. Good luck with your bankruptcy and corrupt politicians there.

any idea how the governors came to the conclusion that the railways would not be used enough? I've been wondering how they came to that conclusion. I find polls, but none done by the governors and no statistical information to show how they came to the conclusion or anything else showing they did anything but stub up and give the money away because they couldn't use it the way they wanted.

I found the below polls done in 2001 posted on the National Association of Railroads (NARP) site. If you or anyone can find any studies/polls, etc. that the governors used to come to their conclusion, I would really be interested in seeing them. I'm having no luck.

P.S. I am a citizen who is affected by this decision.

# Wisconsin: A poll by Chamberlain Research Consultants of Madison, released by the Wisconsin Association of Railroad Passengers in June, 2002, indicated that:

# 77% of Wisconsin residents “support a nationwide system of passenger trains with increased routes, frequencies, and shorter travel time,”
# 76.6% said they would use the trains if the planned nine-state Midwest Regional Rail network becomes available to them.
# 54.3% responded positively to this question: “If federal funding is available for improving intercity passenger rail services, Wisconsin may try to attract these rail improvement funds by pledging to pay for a portion of the project with state money as we do now with highway and airport projects. Is this something you favor, oppose, or neither favor nor oppose as a way to raise money to develop passenger rail services in Wisconsin?”

# Ohio: The Ohio State University Center for Survey Research (OSU-CSR) released a poll (“Tracking Ohio”) on March 8, 2001, which found that 80% of Ohioans want the state to develop passenger rail service. The following question produced a 74% positive response: “If Ohio had a modern, convenient and efficient passenger rail network, do you think it would improve the quality of life in Ohio or would it have no effect?” About two-thirds (65%) of respondents said state money should be used to attract federal passenger-rail funding to Ohio, if such federal funding were available. More than half (53%) said the best way to relieve road traffic congestion is to “improve all forms of transportation including mass transit and high-speed rail.” The statewide poll was conducted by telephone January 2-31, 2001, as part of the OSU-CSR’s monthly Buckeye State Poll. The margin of sampling error was no more than +/-4.3%.

HIgh-Speed Rail LinesNov 10, 2010
Click on the link to see where billions and billions of stimulus money would go for high speed rail lines. Note that 3/4 of them do not connect to the rest of the country.  They are mostly 'local' rail lines. At the bottom or side of the chart, you can click on each line and see the projected cost of each.   In my honest opinion, from reading some of the other newspapers and journals, most of these lines will be so fast, anywhere between 100-236 mph trains, yet only cut 1/2 ...

Obama Stimulus Funds Went To California Feb 20, 2017
The 2009 stimulus package funded millions of dollars for safety improvements for a dam in California that was in “good shape,” but not to the Oroville Dam that is now on the verge of a spillway crisis. Nearly 200,000 residents north of Sacramento were ordered to evacuate after fears that erosion would cause the emergency spillway to fail, which would lead to “catastrophic flooding“ from a 30-foot wall of water. Despite more than a decade of warnings about Oroville, there is no publ ...
