Letter from U.S. Marine to Dianne Feinstein

Posted: Jan 2, 2013

CNN iReport on Dec. 27: Senator Dianne Feinstein, I will not register my weapons should this bill be passed, as I do not believe it is the government’s right to know what I own. Nor do I think it prudent to tell you what I own so that it may be taken from me by a group of people who enjoy armed protection yet decry me having the same a crime. You ma’am have overstepped a line that is not your domain. I am a Marine Corps Veteran of 8 years, and I will not have some woman who proclaims the evil of an inanimate object, yet carries one, tell me I may not have one. I am not your subject. I am the man who keeps you free. I am not your servant. I am the person whom you serve. I am not your peasant. I am the flesh and blood of America. I am the man who fought for my country. I am the man who learned. I am an American. You will not tell me that I must register my semi-automatic AR-15 because of the actions of some evil man. I will not be disarmed to suit the fear that has been established by the media and your misinformation campaign against the American public. We, the people, deserve better than you. Respectfully Submitted, Joshua Boston Cpl, United States Marine Corps 2004-2012 ;

What's wrong with registering a gun? - RC

[ In Reply To ..]
We have to register our cars, why not our guns? I think it's a reasonable expectation.

I don't care if this man is a Marine, he sounds like a jerk. "Some woman?" WTF?

Not just registration - she wants - an all-out ban

"Senator Feinstein has posted a preview of the bill on her website. If the final language of the law actually says what that summary claims, the Democrats are in for a political blowout that will do nothing to advance the ball on meaningful gun control while costing them untold political capital.

"The bill promises to stop the 1) sale, 2) transfer, 3) importation and 4) manufacturing of military-style assault weapons, handguns, and shotguns as well as high-capacity ammunition feeding devices. It also allegedly calls for a ban on all weapons capable of holding a magazine with a greater than 10 round capacity (which includes many standard issue police handguns).

"The bill, as it stands, is an exemplary demonstration of what political suicide looks like.

"In one sweeping stroke, Feinstein intends to instigate the pro-gun lobby, alienate the majority of Americans who oppose re-instating a federal assault weapons ban, and run head long into a constitutional battle, all without even the faintest hope of bill passage.

"While the bill sounds great on paper if you’re playing to a politically progressive base, it will do little if anything to actually address gun violence in this country."

She's been a senator for 20 years and won her 2012 re-election with 63%. Gallup's poll, taken BEFORE Lapierre stepped in his own poop, showed a 51% opposition to the assault weapons ban, which in no way intimidates gun control advocates who have her back. Oh, BTW, considering the fact that the previous ban was in effect for ten years, I doubt that "constitutional battle" is going to pose much of a problem, do you?
The previous ban did nothing to stop the violence - backwards typist
[ In Reply To ..]
since most of the banned guns were in the hands of criminals anyway.

Don't forget Fast and Furious which allowed guns to walk away. How many of those are assault weapons and who got those weapons?

They can ban assault weapons again but it's really a waste of time as it will do nothing to stop the violence. Law enforcement buyouts don't really help much because most guns that are turned in are antique, nonworking, hunting rifles and shotguns.

I think making gun show dealers follow the same rules and regulations as gun shop owners would help.

Do you have any other suggestions?
It would take a long time to make a difference. - so we should start now.
[ In Reply To ..]
These things take time to phase out of circulation.
The aim is to impact mass shooting crimes that produce - high body counts, not to
[ In Reply To ..]
eliminate across-the-board gun-related violence and crime. In that respect, the ban was effective, having reduced that particular type of crime from contributing 4.82% of all crime before the ban, down to 1.61% after enactment, a drop of 66%. It's worth mentioning that any studies on this subject are only as good as the available database, which we all know is inadequate due to state law differentials in terms of registration requirements. Thus, the integrity of any evidence one way or the other is going to be marred by a downward skew that masks the extent of proliferation, and the use of such weapons in violent crime....a compelling argument in favor of FEDERAL laws aimed at remedying that situation.

Another point I would add is that it is difficult to measure the ban's impact on actual lives saved in crimes it may have helped prevent. After all, sooner or later you must allow the flesh-and-blood human beings behind the fatalities stats to become part of the equation, and stop trying to pretend this is just about guns and the 2nd Amendment. I find your "waste of time" comment offensive. No doubt Sandy Hook parents and survivors would use much stronger language in their responses to that callous remark.

stretch the meaning to include ALL firearms, not just assault weapons.

Her bill attempts to register every single gun in this country. In fact, in one part of her summary, it states:
"Protects legitimate hunters and the rights of existing gun owners by:
Grandfathering weapons legally possessed on the date of enactment;
Exempting over 900 specifically-named weapons used for hunting or sporting purposes; and
Exempting antique, manually-operated, and permanently disabled weapons.

But the next stage of her summary states:
"Requires that grandfathered weapons be registered under the National Firearms Act, to include:
Background check of owner and any transferee;
Type and serial number of the firearm;
Positive identification, including photograph and fingerprint;
Certification from local law enforcement of identity and that possession would not violate State or local law; and
Dedicated funding for ATF to implement registration.

So, in one breath, she grandfather's some guns and in the very next sentence, she will force the grandfathered gun owners to be registered with the NFA, have background checks, photographs, finger prints, etc.

Any attempt to have any type of "gun registration" will only lead law abiding gun owners to being a criminal. What percentage of criminals will run out and register their guns? I just can't picture that ever happening.

Gun registration has often led to gun confiscation (Hitler for one), and that is simply fact. Often confiscation has led to tyranny by those governments on their populations.

This is simply not true. I copied and - pasted below SM

alienate the MAJORITY OF AMERICANS who oppose re-instating a federal assault weapons ban.

Actually, an overwhelming number of Americans agree with an assault weapons ban. Not one good reason to have one of this, not one.

So go ahead. Keep your cache but you should be required to register every single weapon you own. What is the fear in doing this?
This silly, shabby lie is all over the right-wing smear machine. - But, OP, why would you post this

misogynistic trash when there's so much other trash available that doesn't insult you too? Unless you're male and this strikes a note?

Especially considering how helpful it would be for - criminal law enforcement officers.

[ In Reply To ..]
It makes no sense NOT to do it.

Feinstein is out to confiscate - No wonder he's standing up to her.

[ In Reply To ..]
He's standing for freedom. Kudos, Marine

Since the bill has not yet been introduced, and its contents - are unknown,

[ In Reply To ..]
that "confiscate" claim would appear to be bogus. It's fairly difficult to get a law grandfathered. What is known about Feinstein's bill is that it is modeled on the expired ban with a few tougher measures, but basically it would ban the sale, transfer, importation, or manufacture of an expanded the list of banned firearms in the previous measure, and reduces the requirement of two military characteristics down to one in the definition criteria. The linked article does question what happens when an owner of existing banned weapons dies, in light of the measure's prohibition of "transfer." Guess we'll just have to wait and see what the answer to that question is. She said she would be introducing the bill on the first day of the 113th.

"We'll have to pass the bill to see what's in it."

Another hero. - Good for him.

Hope more follow his lead.

JB is misinformed. DF has not owned a gun - since the 1970s.

[ In Reply To ..]
She got a gun permit when she became the target of a political group who had already shot out all the windows in her family's home. Her "carry" no doubt came to an abrupt halt after she witnessed the gorey assassination of San Francisco Mayor Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, the event that transformed her into the avid gun control advocate she has been ever since.

She did then, she does not now - but is free to do so if she chooses.

[ In Reply To ..]
We should have the same freedom.

Another take:

A testimony of a Texas woman named Suzanna Gratia-Hupp in the mid-90’s bears repeating. She became a Texas state representative in 1996 after she testified around the country in support of concealed handguns that were previously against the law in Texas. Her testimony is a powerful story showing the importance of gun ownership and possession especially in the massacre situation that she was in that killed 24 including her own parents and injured 20:

You can rest assured that her - handgun is not at risk.

[ In Reply To ..]
Everything we got here in Texas is big, but I've never seen a purse big enough to conceal an assault weapon. Personally, I find nothing "powerful" about appealing to lawmakers in one breath, then turning around and making veiled threats against them in the next.

You do and will continue to have it, - should her bill pass

[ In Reply To ..]
unless, of course, you have plans to stockpile assault weapons after it becomes illegal.

She thinks PTSD started with the Iraq War. WRONG! She's old enough to know that this is a new NAME for battle fatigue, shell shock, and other names that commonly occurred in all wars with veterans. Heck, she doesn't even know what is considered an assault weapon, so hopefully, her bill won't see the light of day vote-wise. Watch h ...
