Christian Taliban Terrorizes Texas Town

Posted: Mar 6, 2010

An evangelical Christian hate group called “Repent Amarillo” is reportedly terrorizing the town of Amarillo, Texas. Repent fashions itself as a sort of militia and targets a wide range of community members they deem offensive to their theology: gays, liberal Christians, Muslims, environmentalists, breast cancer events that do not highlight abortion, Halloween, “spring break events,” and pornography shops. On its website, Repent has posted a “Warfare Map” of its enemies in town.

Calling Repent an “American Taliban,” blogger Charles Johnson notes that the group’s moniker “Army of God” is a rough translation of “Hezbollah.” Led by a man named David Grisham, a security guard at a nuclear-bomb facility called Pantex, Repent first gained media attention in Texas following a campaign to boycott Houston for electing a gay mayor. The group, which is associated with Raven Ministries, collaborates with other Christian groups as well as forced pregnancy advocacy associations like “Bound 4 Life.”

According to a new exposé by the Texas Observer, Repent set out earlier this year to destroy a discreet club of swingers they discovered in town. On New Years eve, the harassment began, with Repent members, almost exclusively young men, showing up in military fatigues and bullhorns, blaring Christian music at the swingers’ club building. The swingers, made up of “regulars” of middle aged, working class couples, were then stalked at every following visit to the club. Repent not only took video of each member, but obtained the swingers’ license plates and dug through their trash, informing neighbors and coworkers of what was once private. Watch a Texas Observer report:

are crazy! Scary-type crazy! And you know these are some of the same people that point fingers at anyone who likes like they might be from the middle east and assume they are a terrorist. These people are just as bad-they are just Christian extremists instead Muslim extremists.

I totally agree - Sam

Just another avenue of hate in the name of religion! The crazies, like Glenn Beck, another example of terrorism at its finest.

Your first part is right, your second part is dead-on WRONG - anon

First, this post is not political. I am replying to an insane statement.

Okay, second...I used to watch Glen Beck, but he's a bit too hyper for me and gives me a headache, so every once in awhile I'll tune in or pull up his website. Friday he has a fascinating show (unfortunately I didn't get to listen to the whole thing), but he was talking about the education/doctrination of our children. I'm going to try to tune in today when it comes on. But to call him a terrorist is so wrong. Please name specific things he has done/planned in the name of terrorism. Just because you don't like him does not mean he is a terrorist. Without Glen Beck a lot of people would not know what is going on in politics. What laws they are passing, what rules they are making, what background the Czars have, who the people in his cabinet and their backgrounds are, etc. Glenn Beck does not promote violence or death. Never has, never will. I've learned a lot about our founding fathers, why they wrote the constitution, what they did to fight and die for our country from watching Beck. Is that what you call terrorism? Letting the people of the country know what is going on in Washington. Telling us to contact our senators and providing us with phone numbers or addresses to do so. Sorry, sweetie....that is just common sense. If you think that is terrorism...well...just don't know what to say except shame on you for trying to equate someone you don't like as a terrorist. That's as bad as calling our President the Antichrist.

If you're going to call Beck a terrorist, then you better include Olberman, Maddow, Matthews, and all the people on the other networks terrorists too.

Again, this was not political, this was a response to the insane statement that Beck is a terrorist.
Oops...thought I was on the gab board - anon

That's why I wrote this was not political, but since I am actually on the political board, just ignore that part of my message.
You logic is faulty. Wing nuts dont watch MSNBC. - They avoid it like the plague. Remember?
[ In Reply To ..]
Progressive movements are primarily secular phenomenons aimed at constructive initiatives, not destructive fatwahs.

You aren't getting the basic connection, are you? Beck is a wingnut, err, I mean conservative with professed libertarian leanings. Whipping up hysteria, fear, conspiracy theories and division is his second calling. He also makes a living doing. He is not solely responsible, by any means, but he has made substantial contributions to the evolution (or shold I say creative design) of fractionalized, disaffected, anti-government, anti-intellectualist and anti-progressive group agendas that often escalate to the mlitarized stage. Some of them carry out their missions under the guise of Christianity.

For the sake of argument, maybe you could point out a progessive liberal group that is on comparative equal footing with such groups as Repent Amarillo or Raving Maniacs, oops, I mean Raven Ministries.

Better still, I challenge you to come up with 127 progressive militia groups. Why 127? Here's a link that lists 527 right-wing splinters, so-called patriot groups. The 127 asterisks incidate the ones that are armed.

I believe that when defining domestic terrorism, different parameters exist as compared to international and global terrorism. Some among us believe that spreading hatred is a key element in the rise of domestic militias and their violent acts, taking a page straight out of AlQuaeda's manifesto. Don't forget, its members are conservative right wingnuts within that 1.6 billion member Moslem cohort.

To be sure, there are so many different constructive and goal-oriented approaches that can be employed. Inciting violence, no matter how subtle or subliminal (and as you said, Beck is HARDLY that), is certainly not one of them.
Here is the link. - sm

just in case anyone cares about the sharp rise in anti-American group organizations of late.
I am unsure I understand the meaning of this link - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
A lot of those groups listed are not anti-American. Just the opposite - they are very much for America, and adhering to and defending the Constitution.

But then again the list that this group, the Southern Poverty Law Center, put together is no different than groups that Glenn Beck deem are "dangerous".

I'll have to read up more about them, but there is just something very fishy "odd" about the SPLC and their motives.

Every religion needs to get back to the basics - "GOD is LOVE". sm

what it should be, not to be used as a weapon to justify personal predjudices.
I am not religious, but that statement seems unfair. - They are USING religion to justify their evil, but
[ In Reply To ..]
that is not religion. The demented minds will turn religion into something else, but that is not the meaning of religion and faith. Maybe some religions could fit what you said, but most are peaceful and about love, not hate. To generalize really is unfair.
Actually, I totally agree. There is, in my mind - a difference between
[ In Reply To ..]
hard core organized "religion" which is what we see here, and faith in a higher being or spiritualism. It is the former that I was referring to and am concerned about, as these are the people who have permeated our society and are problematic to any peaceful and accepting existence with other humans. These are the folks that are forever fighting wars "in the name of God". It is the "organized relgions" particularly of this ilk that are scary, arrogant, hateful, and about anything except love and peace.

Oh puhleeze...do a little research on Lee Fang... - Anon

He's from Media Matters and now Think Progress. He's been called out on his lies by other journalists, as he often embellishes stories or flat out makes stuff up. Hardly an unbiased source, and frankly I wouldn't consider any of his fairy tales to be true.

Attack the source and ignore the issue. Does this mean you - support Repent Amarillo?

[ In Reply To ..]
That's what a REAL credibility deficit looks like.

The article isn't even credible, mainly because the author isn't credible! - Anon

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't have the time nor inclination to read an article written by a guy who lies!
Didnt read the article but it is not credible? - So how credible is your statement?....
[ In Reply To ..]
Don't read the article. In the first paragraph there are 3 blue links, all taking you to the Repent Amarillo's own website where you will hear some kind of pseudoscary militaristic music and see a banner across the top with a soldier carrying a rifle, a Hummer in the backgroud and a helicopter buzzing around overhead. Check out the warfare map, mission statement and the list of citizen targets.

Then ask yourself how you really feel about Evangelical Christian extremists who are assembling militias that resemble the Taliban and other fundamental terrorist Moslem groups.
You might want to check out their website... - research is good
