Missing Iranian scientist defects to US

Posted: Mar 30, 2010

WASHINGTON — An Iranian nuclear scientist who had been reported missing since last summer has defected to the U.S. and is assisting the CIA in its efforts to undermine Iran's nuclear program, ABC News reported Tuesday.

The scientist, Shahram Amiri, has been resettled in the U.S., according to the report.

The CIA had no comment on the report, a spokesman said.

President Barack Obama said Tuesday he hopes international sanctions against Iran for pursuing its nuclear ambitions will be in place this spring. Iran maintains that its nuclear research is for peaceful purposes and not to develop weapons.

Amiri, who worked at Tehran's Malek Ashtar University, an institution closely connected to Iran's Revolutionary Guard, disappeared last June while in Saudi Arabia on a pilgrimage. While his disappearance led to speculation that he had defected and was assisting the West in its efforts to keep track of Iran's nuclear program, the foreign minister for Iran accused the U.S. of helping to kidnap him.

Citing people briefed on the intelligence operation, ABC News said Amiri's disappearance was part of a long-planned CIA operation to persuade him to defect. The CIA reportedly approached Amiri in Iran through an intermediary who made an offer of resettlement on behalf of the United States, ABC News said.

Amiri has been extensively debriefed since his defection, according to the report, and has helped to confirm U.S. intelligence assessments about the Iranian nuclear program.

Nuclear Plant Software Codes Given to Iran - FBI Says "No Problem" - Bluejay -FBI was wrong to think no problem

[ In Reply To ..]
This happened 3 years ago and now look what is going on in Iran and this is not terror related? I think it is worse than ever.

In an astonishing lapse of security, a Muslim who worked at the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station has been charged with illegally taking software codes to Iran and downloading details of control rooms, reactors and designs of the nation’s largest nuclear plant: Palo Verde software is breached.

Alavi bought a laptop computer and used it to download the 3KeyMaster software system. The software is used to train employees on the operation of nuclear reactors.

It provides employees with emergency scenarios and instructs them to react with proper procedures. According to court records, the system contains detailed information on the reactor control rooms as well as maps, drawings, schematics and designs of the power plant.

Authorities said Alavi asked a Palo Verde software engineer to recommend a laptop and help him obtain a user name and password to access the software system. Another employee saw Alavi with that laptop in the simulator room, with a 3KeyMasterand screen displayed. The employee didn’t raise any alarms.
On Aug. 9, Alavi bought a one-way ticket to Tehran, Iran. His last day at the company was Aug. 14. Two days later, he left the country with his wife. In October, authorities say, the software system was accessed from a person using the Palo Verde user ID in Tehran.

The software’s maker, Western Services in Maryland, had no idea that Alavi had resigned from Palo Verde and did not try to restrict his access, according to a federal affidavit.

Nobody from Palo Verde informed Western Services that Alavi had quit his job at the power plant, the FBI said. The nuclear plant did not instruct the software company to remove Alavi’s user name or password from the company’s Web site.

“He has no intention of resuming residence in the United States,” Wake said. “He is seeking employment in Iran, having invested $60,000 in a company with the expectation of getting employment. Alavi owns a house in Tehran valued at $150,000, in which relatives live.”

Alavi’s only connections to the United States, the judge said, are a $200,000 retirement fund, his friends, citizenship “and the possibility that he may want to return if he becomes disappointed in his plan to make his life in Iran.”

A year later, A former engineer at the Palo Verde nuclear plant in Arizona faces serious charges for using a a piece of software he illegally took from the plant in Iran. The trial in which the former employee is
involved has started this Tuesday and comes one year after the man's arrest, and two after he took the training software.

Mohammad Reza Alavi has been a software engineer for the Arizona nuclear Plant since 1989 to 2006 and has admitted to illicitly taking the software. Prosecutors have charged Mohammad with breaking the United States embargo on trade with Iran. The American authorities have stated though that they don't believe the 50-year-old man to have intended to use the materials he took for terrorist actions. Fact of the matter is, the Iranian-born said he only opened the software application to brag to his family and show them what he did for a living.

It appears that the training software Mohammad took was used for simulation of the plant's control room. The software is said to contain detailed plant information, including schematics. Operators at the Arizona Plant said that the piece of software did not pose any security threat, even if used without authorization.

The man was arrested back in 2007, after he returned to Los Angeles, on a flight from Iran. He denied all of the accusations that were formulated against him and now faces trial, according to the American legislation. Back in 2001, Mohammad Reza Alavi received a letter from the American Treasury Department, that informed him that he was found in violation of regulations. Alavi received payments from a company in Iran, which he denied being untrustworthy sources.

The Palo Verde nuclear plant in Arizona is the largest nuclear power station in the United States. The plant is responsible for providing electricity to some 4 million customers in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and California.

Fabulous. I'm about an hour from the PV plant. - }8^0
