Hearing problem affecting work?

Over the past couple of years I have had slight decreased hearing and also difficulty understanding words dictated when QA says they are perfectly clear to them. The last one told me to get a better headset, but I can't afford it. I was told by a person who used to do QA that when they listen, they have it on a different system that provides better sound quality. I'm not sure if it's my ears or the system. These are words I know, I just can't understand them. I also went to a workshop where the instructor was wearing a microphone and the volume was loud enough, but I couldn't understand what he was saying (a lot of other noises). I asked my friend if she understood him and she did. Anyone have this or are familiar with that this disorder might be? Thanks.

The public health departments have audiometers so perhaps you could check with community health for hearing screening. I have seen "Health fairs" where they offer hearing screenings. Also free screenings at Sam's Club, etc. My hubby has a hearing deficiency that gives him trouble in crowds with a lot of background noise. Also, I think really, really good headphones are a necessity, and perhaps sound cancelling. Many people think $50 headphones are great, but for any hearing problem, I think the headphones between $150 and $200 are the way to go. I use Bose and my pends are often below 1%.

[ In Reply To ..]I have sensorineural hearing loss. You really should get tested. Also, I was able to go through the office of vocational rehab in my state. They helped me purchase hearing aids based on my ability to costshare and offered other devices and services. Please check into it. The hearing aids have made a profound difference in my life! After more than 40 years of MT'ing, I have lost 80% hearing in left ear and 10% in right ear. This, according to doc, is definitely due to constant sound assault on my ears for all of these years. They are doing a couple of tests to rule out Meniere's Disease at the end of this month.
