Do you freak out hearing about snow

Posted: Jan 11, 2011

Why people hear about snow and freak out and run to the grocery store? I went to get milk and a few other things that I didn't get the other day and it was crazy.

I figure as long as I have milk and food, dog and cat food and cat litter we are ok.

But I tell you people hear snow and they flock to the store big time makes me laugh actually I wouldn't have gone out except that I needed milk and hamburger.

milk, eggs, etc. if low. If we have a significant snow fall, it takes days to get out, plus I don't drive unless absolutely necessary, so I will go get stuff I might need or "crave." 16 years ago we were supposed to get 1 or 2 inches here and ended up the next morning with 17 inches, so I am always prepared. (I remember because I was pregnant and craving all sorts of stuff not in the house.)

you can do w/o milk and eggs, but you can't - annie

do without toilet paper!

I live within 1/8 of a mile of WalMart so it's never a big deal to have a big snow.

They will even hype up a storm days in advance to get people all worked up and going out for food.

The only thing I've ever worried about was filling the tub and all available empty bucket with H2O so we can still have luxury of flushing toilets or watering animals. We keep drinking water in 5-gallon containers on hand anyway just as a matter of course.

Pantry is always full of canned goods as times are tough as it is, fridge is almost always empty anyway.

I also keep animal food well stocked up on, as I'm paranoid year-round like that...like if I died, I'd want them well fed and taken care of.

Even though we have a small portable genny that can power a few lights, I still keep candles and oil lamps on hand just because they're cool and it's kinda fun to go all caveman--at least for the first 24 hours anyway.

Our stores had specials on all kinds of canned veggies, pasta, canned fruit, cake mixes, etc. and they were either 10/$10 or 5/$1. I went wild!

The worse thing of it is.....I don't have any storage bins/buckets to seal everything tight right now and they're all sitting on the kitchen floor in plastic bags.

I like using the oil lamps but it's too hard to read with them when the power goes off. What the heck do you do to pass the time when you lose power? I twiddle my thumbs and pace the floor. LOL

washclothes, just wash then out well afterwards and wash your hands. Color code them, brown washclothes for bowel movements and yellow ones for urination. Whe do you think they did before toilet paper, they used rags and washed them out in a strem with some soap. I would rather do the washcloth meathods then take the possibility of clogging up my toilet with papertowels or napkins.

I live in Maine so do not freak out about the word SNOW. It is usually a nightmare the day before the snow hits, so I make sure I have what I need a few days in advance. Maybe everyone hits the grocery store so they do not have to go in the snow - that would be my guess.

I grew up in Maine and can never remember - being out of school

due to snow.

I have live in North Carolina since the age of 16 and laugh at the way people act here when the weather even THREATENS snow.

This week, we got snow. On Monday, school was canceled, even though it didn't start snowing until 3 p.m. School has been closed all week, even today, when the roads are dry....at least in this neck of NC.

Saturday school is on and the kids are losing their spring break. God forbid they take away teacher workdays!

Don't get me started on the grocery stores! The people here can't drive in the rain...let alone the snow!

As long as we can snow blow or shovel ourselves out of our driveway, we will drive to the store no matter what. And restaurants. And the bar. I live within walking distance to a Kwik Trip so I only go when I absolutely need to just b/c I got spoiled working from home and my car is in a warm garage now :-)

The problem in the southern regions of the - we are not sissies

US with large amounts of snowfall is we do not have the equipment to clear the roads to enable people to get out. Several years ago we woke up to 17 inches when only 2 was predicted. As a hub for a major company that flies in out of the city, the city was required by that company to get equipment to maintain roads/airport so flights could get in and out or they would be looking to move elsewhere. Needless to say, we now do not have more than a day or so of problems when the bad weather hits and the airport is usually cleared out within hours of a major snowfall.

I meant that term for ppl who freak out and close schools for like an inch of snow. sm - SassyPants

I didn't mean to call any one person or any one region that, I meant that (some) Wisconsinites think it's funny that cities close schools down for 1 inch of snow. Really? That's Easter Sunday here. I'm sorry if your city doesn't have plows or equipment, I didn't know that. I guess I gotta watch my language as to not offend anyone. I've lived here my whole life so I don't know any different, but 5 months of winter here is nothing new to me. I just shoveled 6 inches of snow this morning, such is life.

BTW all that snow melts in the spring and makes mud and then magically disappears. (someone from the south asked once where we put the snow after winter) um....

We are having our first plowable snow storm of the year in my section of Maine (6-12 inches).  It is really gorgeous.  I know I will not be singing this same song in a few months.  It just really puts you in the holiday spirit.  I am not into winter sports so it makes for a long winter, but always enjoy the snow in the month of December.  I prefer to enjoy it from the inside looking out with a wood stove fire going -  LOL. ...

Well, The Snow Totals Are Out For PAFeb 11, 2010
I'm so lucky. Our county got the highest, 24-27" depending on where you live. I live in the 27" zone.  So in 2 weeks, we have had 34" of snow. Had to laugh at DH. He put the snowblower in the storage shed after the snow last week instead of leaving it in the garage. It was a bit of a hassle to get it back out.  He's 6' tall and the snow was up to his knees.  His boots weren't [up to his knees].  Poor guy. I made a good hot luch for him, though.  ...

First Light Snow Of The Year - That's StickingNov 25, 2012
I like the way the grayish sky contrasts with the white of the snow, and the pine trees.  Just read a strange poem by Emily Dickinson about a pine tree, I'm sharing the whole thing here.  Love the line, "a sea with a stem."  I had to stop and look out the window at a pine, when I read this line.  Yep, that's right - a sea with a stem. Hearing Loss....smJun 24, 2012
After more than 40 years of MT'ing, I have lost 80% hearing in left ear and 10% in right ear.  This, according to doc, is definitely due to constant sound assault on my ears for all of these years.  I now need dual hearing aids; the left ear to compensate for severe hearing loss and the right ear to prevent hearing loss.  I will be getting them within the next week.  My real concern is whether I will be able to wear either my in-the-ear headset or over-the-head head ...
