I'm 66 and have been a transcriptionists for 22 years. Has anyone besides me notice that you're hearing has gotten worse from having those earphones in listening to all sorts of noise levels for so long.

I've noticed that I have a harder time with accents that never used to give me trouble before, particularly Chinese and African accents, and I have a harder time determining mumbled words. I'm 64 and have been doing this for nearly 31 years. Don't remember having these problems when I was younger.

to your age. Mostly older people have the hearing aids. I don't doubt that headphones can cause problems, but at least it is not loud machinery or a rock band. I wear ear plugs at football games.

You can lose hearing doing this job. Many times, I've had to turn up the volume to hear the doctor (who chooses that time to basically whisper) when he/she is in a room with alarms going off all over the place. Sometimes the pain is more than I can take. Hearing loss started back when I was a kid, but it's gotten so much worse since becoming a transcriptionist. I can hear most sounds but miss individual words when a lot of different noises are happening at the same time. I was told that hearing aids won't help me, so at some point, I'll stop typing simply because too much of the language will be lost to me. Headphones and those earphones that insert can absolutely contribute to hearing loss. I call it "direct deposit" of the noise that causes the damage.

I had damage to my left inner ear affecting my balance when I was 18. I have 1/3 of the balance function in that ear than the right ear. I have had tinnitus ever since. The way I describe to someone is the noise is like the constant static that played over a television station back in the days when they shut down programming at midnight. It's a constant "shhhh" sound in both ears. I know that has caused some hearing loss, but combine that with the constant sounds of dictators and the background noise that comes with dictation, I know I can't hear as well as I used to.

I finally broke down a couple of months ago and added an audio enhancer to my laptop. It has made a big difference for me. The highs and lows of sounds are smoothed out and I can hear mumbled words much better. It was worth the $30 to purchase it. The percentage of reports I send to QA has dropped over 10% a month since I added it. I use the program Breakaway. Give it a try to see if it helps you with work.

I have a hard time shutting off background voices when in public. I seem to zone in on background voice rather than voice that is with me, speaking to me. My kids call me hawk, since they think I have superhuman hearing, and cannot walk down the hallway mumbling about me or to me, since I can hear them. They always say "how do you do that?"

After more than 40 years of MT'ing, I have lost 80% hearing in left ear and 10% in right ear. This, according to doc, is definitely due to constant sound assault on my ears for all of these years. I now need dual hearing aids; the left ear to compensate for severe hearing loss and the right ear to prevent hearing loss. I will be getting them within the next week. My real concern is whether I will be able to wear either my in-the-ear headset or over-the-head head ...

Hi, all. I was diagnosed last year with hearing loss and this year went back for test and there is a significant drop. They are doing a couple of tests to rule out Meniere's Disease at the end of this month. No matter what, I am going to have to get something to help me continue in this field or go with another job (nursing, coding, etc.). I am working with the Ability Works in my state and they will help me get equipment like hearing aids, specialized heatsets, etc. ...

Over the past couple of years I have had slight decreased hearing and also difficulty understanding words dictated when QA says they are perfectly clear to them. The last one told me to get a better headset, but I can't afford it. It's about time. WHen you don't have respect for Congress and thumb your nose at them when investigating, those on the committees need to get tough.
