"Jerome McKean, an associate professor of criminology at Ball State University in Indiana, asserts that "there is a definite correlation" between an increase in temperature and an increase in crime. "The peak months for most forms of crime are July and August, especially for property crimes."

One of the reasons that property crimes—burglaries, grand larcenies and auto thefts—go up, the professor said, is because the most frequent perpetrators of such crimes aren't in school. Mr. McKean said the peak age for arrests for property crimes is 16. At the same time, more people take more trips and vacations during the summer months, making homes more vulnerable to burglars.

The month with the fewest crimes has been February. Even when adjusted to reflect 31 days of activity, February registered only 8,175 crimes per month, about 29% fewer than the average for September. March was second-lowest, followed by January.

The Journal also reviewed monthly homicide numbers in New York City between 2002 and 2009.

July has been the most deadly, with an average of 53.3 slayings in the city that month over the past eight years. June is second with an average of 53.0 homicides, followed by September at 50.5 (both June and September are adjusted figures based on 31 days), December at 50.3 and August at 49.9, according to the statistics."

This is just one of many studies on this. Most violent riots have happened in the summer. People are just plain grumpy and irritable when it gets hot. When it is cold, they stay in and watch TV.

warmth has a direct relationship to violence...then how come Florida and California are not the highest crime areas in the United States...It is always hot there, so why is this only a phenomenon that affects only Chicago? kind of blows holes in this theory, I would say. :-)

I don't know about the rest of you, but the weather we have been having in our state is unusual. It has been for several years, huge ice storms and blizzards when we never had a blizzard before as far as I know, and ice storms were rare.
