Health Information Technology

Posted: Jul 3, 2013

Does anyone know of someone who has an Associates degree in Health Information Technology and what they did with this degree?  I am starting my local college in the fall and still trying to determine what career to focus on.  This degree said it has to do with medical management, medical records, coding and various hospital departments.  The job descriptions of most jobs available, it seems I would already be qualified to do (being an MT and previously a nurse) and I don't want to waste time pursuing something I couldn't find meaningful work.  Anyone familiar with this?  TIA.

;

You may think of this as medical records - but it is more than that

[ In Reply To ..]
That is the field that deals with medical records, healthcare privacy and security, coding, cancer registry, clinical documentation improvement, and healthcare data management and analysis, among other things. In a hospital, it is the department that either has MTs or contracts it out. It is also the department that oversees electronic health records.

After reading the program description, you feel you -- by virtue of the fact that you are a nurgtse and MT -- are already qualified to do this work, so you are concerned that it won't be meaningful?

You know how MTs get all upset when people say they are sure they can do MT because they can type?

You are as close to being qualified to work in HIT as those people are to doing MT.

What you aren't seeing is the same thing those folks aren't seeing ... the part of the iceberg that is beneath the surface. Because you are unaware of what is required, except for the parts of it you learned for nursing and MT, you think that what you know is all that there is.

Yes, those things will help you, but they are not the whole story.

Can you, right now and without looking anything up, explain what DRGs are, how case mix affects a facility, and what the UHDDS is? Can you explain the laws that affect healthcare and the Joint Commission requirements for a medical record? Can you explain what descriptive and inferential statistics are and provide definitions and formulas?

Is the work meaningful? I think so. There are 2 levels. At the associate's level, there is the RHIT. At the bachelor's level, there is the RHIA. There are also certifications in coding, privacy and security, etc. The problem with the RHIT and RHIA is that you can take the exam only after completing a program accredited by the American Health Information Management Association. www.ahima.org

There is a ton of information on that website. Hv

Where's The TechnologyMar 02, 2010
Somewhere, at this very moment, hundreds of thousands - perhaps millions - of technical folks are figuring out new ways for our "voices to be heard". The successor to FaceBook, MySpace and Twitter resides somewhere in the fevered brain of some whizkid even as we speak. Would it be too much to ask for a simple BS filter before we invent even more ways for people to post BS? ...

Health Insurance Is A Poor Measure Of Health Care.Sep 14, 2011
On Tuesday, the Census Bureau released its annual report on health insurance coverage in the United States. News media widely misconstrued the data and presented the problems facing the nation's health care system through a distorted lens. Many major news outlets made a basic error when reporting on the Census Bureau study. The Los Angeles Times wrote that "the number of Americans with no health insurance rose in 2010 to 49.9 million from 49 million the year before." But the figure c ...

Health Care Reform-Question About Canadian Health CareDec 03, 2009
So....a friend is for our US health care reform (already retired and on Medicare) because he had no trouble going to Canada to get laser surgery on his eyes so he wouldn't have to wear glasses and states there is nothing wrong with the Canadian system....but, and I'm asking a serious question here, how long do people really wait for emergent surgery if they belong to the Canadian system versus the American system as we have it now? How did Canada get their health care system up and ru ...

Newly released emails from Wikileaks show Hillary Clinton staffers debating how they can best use the death of a black man to further their agenda. The email began as a request for an essay by Clinton from Marie Claire who was partnering with Harvard University on a study about women and guns but it quickly devolved into brainstorming ideas on how to push the campaign’s anti-gun and racial narratives. The team began discussing an article published in “The Guardian&r ...

Some Questions About HPV. Any InformationDec 01, 2015
I am writing this with the full knowledge of my dear friend who just discovered about a month ago she has HPV. I told her I would ask other MTs who might have a little information about this. First of all, she is telling me she does not fully understand her physician, language barrier there and when asking questions she was told she was exaggerating the issue! She is a person who is very involved in her church yet I doubt she has been able to talk with someone there, very embarrassed about her s ...

Need Military Burial InformationDec 02, 2009
My husband's father was in the military and served in VietNam 3 times.  He just passed right after divorcing his wife.  His wife now says that in between hospitalizations she took him to the JP and they re-married and he changed his will (8 days after he made the will after the divorce).  Now that is enough to grasp but here is the clincher.  She is telling the family that the military won't bury him for 8 days (because they are so busy) and after the 1 hour viewing ...

Eye-opening Information On Hospital Costs.Jul 05, 2012
I watched Dr. Sanjay Gupta's piece on CNN this week where he was explaining why hospital costs were so high.  Of all the bills collected by the hospital from all sources they only end up actually collecting 4%, that's 4 cents for every dollar billed!  To compensate, they bill accordingly so they come out even or ahead, $800 for a disposable chest tube that in reality costs less than $50 from the supplier.  This was really shocking to me!  To be fair, labor need ...

Old Information On The Government Funding Of The LeftFeb 10, 2017
It is outrageous that the government funds George Soros' Tide Foundation and Tides Center, with his hatred for American values.  I don't know if they still get government funding but I would think they do.  The Tides Foundation and/or Open Society Foundation give millions to the ACLU and Human Rights Watch. The Government also gave funds the LaRaza. Tides Foundation In 2009, their total assets were $192,219,967 Between 1997 and 2001, they received grants from the followi ...

Question About Release Of Medical InformationMar 11, 2017

I have a bra question. I've recently learned that I have been wearing the wrong size bra for years (who hasn't unfortunately). I was sized at Victoria Secret and am a size 34DDD. I've always worn bigger size bras to fit the cups and had spillage and still had a gap in the band part, no matter the size or style, and now I know why they never fit properly. Well, VS has my size 34DDD (of course) in many styles but they are at least $50 for one bra and way out of my price range, n ...
