Question about release of medical information

My brother has been admitted to a rehab facility for treatment of his diabetic leg wound, with apparent debridement down to bone from what he tells me. The problem is, he has Alzheimer's, is understandably depressed, and sounds pretty sedated when I call him. His wife is elderly and ill and hospitalized herself and doesn't comprehend much. I'd like to know more about his condition and what's being done for it and the prognosis for release. In his more lucid moments, he said he'd be willing to sign a release of information to allow me to talk to his nurse or a doctor (though he says he hasn't even seen a doctor since admission earlier this week). What I'd like to know is, if I can get access to his information, can I also obtain a copy of his medical records, or is the information limited to verbal only? He sounds very bad and I'm worried he and his wife may not make it home again, which makes me very sad, but there's no one to oversee things to make sure they're being treated properly. To make matters worse, we live almost 3000 miles apart.

Caregiver authorization - Me again
[ In Reply To ..]He needs to name you or someone else Power of Attorney for medical decision making. Also, there is a caregiver authorization form that should be filled out to give you authorization to his records, they will not do anything verbally.

[ In Reply To ..]Thank you all for giving me your good advice. I think I'll hold off and see how he does over the next week, and I've involved my sister and brother in making a decision about them. Before this happened, my brother, though he has Alzheimer's, was fairly clear thinking, still able to pay his bills and take care of other responsibilities, and I'm hoping he'll return to that level in time. The most recent phone call to him wasn't real hopeful though. I will consider your advice. Thanks again.
