Something made me actually read my monthly Verizon home phone bill, and I discovered that there's a $14.95 charge for "other providers." Reading further, I discovered it's a charge from "Transaction Clearing." Apparently it's legal for Verizon to include these charges on their monthly bills, so it's a legal scam. There's a phone number for Transaction Clearing, and you shouldn't call Verizon about this.

I'm almost afraid to look at my back bills. This could have been going on forever and I never knew it. Grrrr!

Apparently I hit a wrong button while surfing the web and signed up for whatever it was. I actually called AT&T, was told that they could not do anythign about it. Called the company and was refunded the entire amount that had been billed--3 months' worth. If you accidentally click on these things (a lot of them are surveys or that you have won a gift card) the fine print says it will be billed to your phone bill because, of course, you have to actually enter your phone number.

Here's a crazy tale - AT&T voluntarily gave away their long distance service to a scam company who told them I authorized the change. Never notified me, just switched me from their unlimited long distance to this other company's that cost way more! Took me 3 months to get the mess straightened out and I had to involve the BBB to get taken seriously. I asked AT&T why the heck they would work against their best interest and their customer's best interest to reward scammers for lying without verifying ANYTHING - and they could not say why. Their internal policies are crazy. The scammers "slammed" my account right after a bill came out so I wasn't even aware of the change until after a month had gone by - and of course I had made plenty of calls innocently thinking I had the same service that I had for the last 3 years! So read EVERY bill carefully and call about ANY unfamiliar names popping up. They will take ANYONE'S word that "you" authorized whatever they want and never tell you.

It happend in the same way as the poster above with AT&T... I was doing my regular online banking, and clicked the wrong place on an ad that popped up for "overdraft protection". The way it was set up, it was made to look like if you clicked on a certain key, it would bypass the ad and take you to your account balance. It did take me to my account balance, but what I didn't know was it automatically signed me up for this overdraft protection, which not only cost me money each month, but worse, if my checking account balance fell below $50, it automatically added money from my savings, and charged me $35! Which of course then caused me to bounce a check, because I didn't know my account had been charged $35. So of course, I had to pay for the bounced check!

I finally sat down and went over my last 6 months' bank statements, and figured out what had happened. I was LIVID. Called up the bank and told them that either they cancelled that so-called "service" immediately, AND credited my account for all those "service charges" I hadn't authorized, or I would close my account IMMEDIATELY. (AND file a complaint with the BBB and whoever else would listen).

They did stop the service, and they did credit my account. I told them I thought their website ads were very misleading, and were obviously designed to make people accidentally do exactly as I had done... sign up for things without knowing they had done so. Later, I talked with a friend who happened to work at Wells Fargo, and she said that yes, they did this, and other deceptive practices, because it made them a LOT of money, even if it was only for a few months before the customer caught on.

Now I never click on any part of those ads that pop up on Wells Fargo's site, except the "X" in the upper righthand corner, to close the ad. And for other ads that sometimes pop up on other websites, or upon opening my web browser, I don't touch my cursor to any part of them AT ALL... instead, I hit "CTL-ALT-DEL" and close the page entirely, then re-open it. When I do that, usually the ad doesn't reappear.

I wish this sort of deceptive pop-up-advertising would be made illegal!

I was channel surfing last night and clicked on to Fox when Bill O'Reilly's show was on.
