Grocery Bill

Posted: Jul 27, 2010

I'm just curious. How much money do you spend each month on groceries & how many are in your family?

Sorry if this was discussed in the past. I couldn't find the thread.

In my home there is just my husband and I, 3 cats, 1 dog and 8 very large exotic tortoises that are eating machines. I include these animals in our bill because their food is part of our bill.

Our grocery bill is between 150 to 250 a month BUT I use coupons for everything and anything I can, shop on double coupon days and price match when I can. I have done my research and tested generics and found that many are very good, comparable to name brands.
I spluge only on good cuts of meats.

I think that I do pretty good on budgeting and have become the coupon queen! Even got hubby involved in cutting them out on Sunday mornings when the flyers come. It's like our Sunday ritual, coffee, breakfast and coupon cutting!

I have also on occasion purchased the Angelfood food boxes. Check our Angelfood ministries.com THAT is a bargain, 35 bucks for a weeks worth of food! AND now they have other value packs. I buy these for our elderly neighbor friend also, she has no family in town.

I'm only one person, and I don't know how much I spend! But I remember a comment my mother made in 1974. The whole family (including 4 kids-- 3 of them teenagers) were at the beach. Mom made a comment about the grocery bill being $100 a week while on vacation-- unbelievably high for her! And this was with stay-at-home meals and some food that we had brought with us! And HER mother before her had prophesied decades earlier that bread would one day be $1 a loaf, which my mother couldn't believe at the time! How times change. We pay more for food, and it's not even as good as it used to be--more additives and preservatives and other weird things added, just to make it more "convenient"!

You can't "purchase" coupons but you can pay for a coupon clipping service.

mycouponhunter is one I use.
ebay (search for the product + coupon)

Try going to the forums at hotcouponworld. It will take some time to learn. Start with health and beauty products like toothpaste as they are the easist to learn.

If you live close to a Publix you can really score with their BOGO deals+ coupons. Checkout iheartpublix.

Except for popcorn, bottled water and condiments I don't coupon for food very much BUT I do coupon for HBA (shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, makeup) and household supplies like lysol, glade, pet food, plastic cups, etc.

Join vocalpoint and kashi and they will send you great coupons every few months.

I use a 3 ring binder and baseball card holders to keep my coupons in.

P&G puts out coupons every month. If you use Crest of Always you can order 10 or 20 and stock up. Their coupons usually expire that month though. I use 4 overnight pads at a time so I order Always coupons every couple months and stock up. Every $1 of or B1G1 really adds up!

Getting free stuff can be addicting! Just a warning - do not get wrapped up in chasing EVERY free deal. I buy what we will use in one year and then ignore those deals for the rest of the year.

I almost never buy a paper. I find the deals I want to do any then use a clipping service. If you can get multiple papers from friend or work file them by date in folders - do not clip them. When the deals are posted they are posted by title of insert (SS smart source, RP red plum or P&G) and the date. If you filed them by date you can find them easily. Sometimes deals come out weeks after the insert.
HTH :)

$100. We are a family of 5 and use coupons. We purchase coupons in packs of 20. We really have to stockpile, but it's worth it! Sometimes we can go 3-4 months at a time without shopping for anything...well, except for staples like milk, eggs, etc. So, it's difficult to tell what our monthly bill is.

We are a family of 5 and spend approximately $600.00 a month, although it is probably more than that with all of the little trips. We also butcher our own beef so we don't have to spend much on meat except chicken (we eat a lot of that!) They eat me out of house and home!!

Brain fart. I saw "Grocery Bill" and thought it must be a character like Mr. Clean. "Hello, ma'am, I'm Grocery Bill, and I'm here to help you with your grocery shopping!"

You should create a new kids show - - Happy Funtime With Grocery Bill!

It ranges around 400-500 (sometimes more, rarely less) for the month. We only shop once every 2-3 weeks. That also includes a few gardening items here and there or maybe something we don't usually buy (toaster, a movie, or whatever). I can't remember the last time I ever shopped and bought just straight groceries. Seems we always need something. In that cost the kinds of food I buy are salads for the first 3 days, stuff for tuna sandwiches, PB&J, chicken, frozen spinach, eggs, milk. That's usually our basics.

OMG -- I feel like I'm really wasting some money. BUT, if I stop and think about it I think we're comparable to other posters. We are in KS, there are 6 of us humans (including 4 teenagers), a dog, 2 cats, a hamster, a guinea pig, and 4 turtles. My total includes groceries and also HBA (toiletries, etc.), household items (cleaning supplies, etc.) and pet food & supplies. We use Costco for many items, but I have fallen out of the coupon habit. I do buy largely store brands as opposed to namebrands (hence, no coupons) and sale items if they will store/keep or are an especially good deal. That amount does not include what I spend on school lunches, though... another $200 a month roughly.

I'm in KS too, and I think groceries here are more expensive - sm

I've gotten into discussions on grocery bills on other forums, and I always pay more than anyone else does. They talk about $4 rotisserie chickens or bags of oranges for $1.99 and I never see that here.

Two of us plus 2 cats costs $600-$700 month, but that does include toiletries.

Grocery Bill Last Month Out Of This World.....Nov 07, 2012
I was watching extreme coupons yesterday and decided to see what I actually spent in groceries for Oct.  A whooping $1300.00!!  I always spend around $800-$1000 but couldn't believe this. (There are 5 of us at home.)  We're not doing anything different, (or at least I think we aren't.)   I think it is just the general increase in regular groceries.  I'm sick about it and am going to do everything I can to cut that bill in half.  I was j ...

Grocery ShoppingDec 29, 2009
I am just wondering about an idea I have had and wanted some feedback to see if it a workable plan in your mind. I am thinking of starting to be a personal shopper for people for their groceries and household items.  I am thinking that I can make money this way by taking their shopping lists and buying the groceries using coupons and then they still just pay their grocery bill and I make my money by whatever coupons I can come up with toward their orders.  What do you think?  Wo ...

Grocery List Anymore? Dec 02, 2009
More and more, people seem to just use cell phones at the store instead of using a list. We were at Krogers a little while ago, and encountered at least 20 people on cell phones while shopping, asking what to get, etc. All ages too, from teens to the elderly. Drives me nuts!!! ...

I do the majority of my grocery shopping at Walmart (I don't like Walmart, but I have to grocery shop there for financial reasons - besides, I can't see paying more for the same item at Publix when I can get it for less at Walmart.)   I also do comparison shopping at Walmart. The other day when checking out, the clerk told me about Walmart's "savings catcher" site (savingscatcher.com) where you can save even more money on your grocery bill (or anything you buy ...

Gibbs Mocks Palin, Reads Grocery List Off His HandFeb 10, 2010
In a dig at former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs took time during Tuesday's briefing to read a mock grocery list that he had written in pen on his left hand. "Eggs, milk and bread," Gibbs read from the black ink stains on his palm, claiming he was going to "make pancakes" for his son Ethan. "I crossed out bread," he added, pointing to the line that, indeed, x-ed bread off the list."I also wrote down hope and change just in case I forgot that word. ...
