Verizon is giving the feds phone records for all of its US customers: report

A top-secret federal court order, obtained by the Guardian newspaper, requires the Verizon to hand over information regarding phone calls on an “ongoing, daily basis” to the FBI. The information includes the phone numbers of both callers, location data, and the time and duration of calls, according to the four-page order.

Covered under Patriot Act.

Same thing done in 2006, only more phone companies were involved.

No conversations were recorded.

It was top secret, so if it is national security related, it's possible whatever they were looking for could compromise national security, so we may never know why, but to assume that we might be safer is not a stretch IMO.

I'm sure if Gore is outraged, I should be too ;-), but I'll see how this plays out.

Yeah it is, - and this

[ In Reply To ..]
started with the last president under the Patriot Act. Our government will continue to abuse power as long as we let them and keep voting in the same idiots that do it, on both sides.

any records. Secondly, wondered if you noticed the word impeachment in there.
I'm not sure what you're driving at - but

This article, I believe, has less of a slant to it.

I'm not dissing Bush Administration for using phone records to thwart terrorism. Since it would be top secret and a matter of national security, as I said in my other post, I wouldn't expect either administration's motivation to be completely transparent.

How about comparing then and now requests? Here ya go - Truthhurts

THEN:
Ever since news of the surveillance program became public in December, the president and members of his administration have stressed that it was limited to intercepting phone conversations and e-mail messages where one party to the conversation was outside the United States.

" Feb. 6 Attorney General Alberto Gonzales: "Only international communications are authorized for interception under this program. ... To protect the privacy of Americans still further, the NSA employs safeguards to minimize the unnecessary collection and dissemination of information about U.S. persons.

NOW:
The top-secret court order, obtained by the Guardian newspaper, requires the carrier to hand over information regarding phone calls — which does not include actual conversations — on an “ongoing, daily basis” to the FBI.

The top-secret court order, obtained by the Guardian newspaper, requires the carrier to hand over information regarding phone calls — which does not include actual conversations — on an “ongoing, daily basis” to the FBI. The information being turned over includes the phone numbers of both callers, location data, and the time and duration of calls, according to the four-page order. This order INCLUDES NOT ONLY CALLS MADE ABROAD BUT ALSO INSIDE THE U.S.

The order does not address in any way whether the callers are suspected of wrongdoing. There also is no indication of whether the order is a renewal of an ongoing practice, or if other phone carriers follow the same procedure whether inside or outside the USA, whether local or long distance and is on an “ongoing daily basis.”

Big difference between now and then, don’t you think?
I would say a big difference. - nm

possibly a reasonable use for this kind of surveillance.

No, it didn't. It took place the SAME day. - Truthhurts

Kinda funny, don't you think?

This order was signed April 15, 2013. What day was the marathon bombing? April 15, 2013.

How come this order was signed by the judge the SAME DAY AS THE BOMBING? Something's fishy here. There's no way they could have gotten the order written up then put in a judge's hand immediately.

Care to comment on that?
Going to page 2 of the original order, it certainly looks like the 15th to me - Truthhurts

I even zoomed in on it up to 300%. Still looks like the 15th to me.

Don't tell me I need glasses...just got my eyes checked and got new glasses. LOL

It's in your own link you posted in your original post, TWICE:

"The order, signed by Florida federal Judge Roger Vinson, went into effect April 25 and extends until July 19."

"The federal court order requiring Verizon to turn over information about all of its customers' phone calls was granted April 25 and lasts until July 19."

Read this:

I LOOKED AT THE DATE AT THE END ON PG 2. I DID NOT READ THE FULL ORDER. So, I commented that the date sure looked like the 15th to me....but no matter. So how could I admit I was wrong if I didn't even read the whole order?

No one on your side EVER admits they're wrong. I have admitted to being wrong in posts when I know I'm wrong.
You don't read the full articles you post links to? - I do for the ones I post.
[ In Reply To ..]
Well, that's interesting to know. And not that surprising, I guess.

I have several times admitted I'm wrong on this site, usually starting out with "I stand corrected..." (though not much, if any, occasion to on the PB because I'm a little more careful with my sources and research here).

I dare say that before I'd think of throwing out a snarky "Care to comment on that?" or the like that I'd definitely be double-checking my 'facts' first.
