Things that make you go hmmmm

Posted: Feb 9, 2013

So I was watching the new this evening and they were interviewing a woman in New Jersey who was stocking up for the storm.

She was buying gasoline for her generator. (Okay, got that, great idea.)

She was also buying bags of ice.  Why ice? What am I missing?

;

To put in her freezer to save her frozen meat and stuff? - nm

At first I thought you were missing the obvious.... - Trampled underfoot

[ In Reply To ..]
Then I realized SHE was missing the obvious! It's a blizzard! If you need ice for your fridge or freezer in case of a power outage, there is snow out there! Or with the temperatures that cold, she could put a couple of basins filled with water outside and make her own ice blocks.

Not if every entryway is snowed in by drifts or - if there is rising water. sm

[ In Reply To ..]
We have had snow on the East Coast where we literally had to climb out of a window before we could even begin to dig our doors out from the drifts that were at least 3-4 feet high. Depends on how your house sits.

Ice can be melted into water too. I do not know if I would want to drink water from basins outside near an ocean.

Those first two things came to my mind.

I would buy ice. Have enough to think about w/o having to - make ice when you can buy it cheap. nm

here's what you're missing - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Snow is not ice. A bag of snow in a cooler is not sufficient to keep food frozen or fresh for very long. Plus, lots of times you lose your electricity way before enough snow accumulates. Sounds like maybe the lady with the generator was just covering her bases.

Sometimes it can be difficult to get around for days. Maybe she wanted to make sure she had enough milk for the kids. Maybe she has insulin she wants to keep on ice.

Are you in the path of a blizzard? - have

[ In Reply To ..]
you ever experienced a blizzard?

Maybe she lives in a high rise with no balcony. Maybe there are other reasons why ice is a better option for her than putting her food out in the blizzard.

Maybe you don't need to worry about what she's doing because it isn't your problem. It certainly isn't doing you any harm, so why the snarkiness about someone you don't even know who isn't hurting anyone?

Maybe you don't know everything. Leave the people affected by the storm alone to deal with it as they can.

Geesh, cool it. Not every conversation is an attack - nm

Hee, hee, cool it..... Get it?? - Buying ice..... nm

It sounds like the OP lives in a more temperate state. I can't believe you got so mamy "dislikes" on your post.

The idea that buying ice is silly because there's snow outside just cracks me up.

Thinking it was her attitude that got her so many - dislikes. nm

[ In Reply To ..]
x

Thank you for your support - I think I got so many dislikes

[ In Reply To ..]
because so many people on this planet would rather wallow in their own ignorance and express contempt or ridicule for things they don't understand than to expend the effort it would take to spend a few minutes actually thinking about or doing some research about something they don't understand and maybe discovering for themselves that everyone else isn't stupid or lazy or otherwise evil. If they don't understand why someone in a different environment does something, that that something must be stupid or unnecessary.

The haters must be so pleased now that several people have lost their lives because of the storm. They must feel so superior because of course nothing bad will ever happen to them because they're so much smarter than everyone else.

(I have a bet with myself about how many hateful, hurtful people will dislike this post, too.)
You need a long soak in a bubble bath with a glass - of wine. nm

I wasn't going to reply - the OP
[ In Reply To ..]
But I changed my mind.

There was NOTHING in my post that was judgmental. Where did I say ANYTHING about someone being lazy, or stupid??????? I NEVER DID AND YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO SAY THAT I DID. Your own posts are extremely inflammatory and judgmental! I hope you're enjoying that glass house of yours.

I have lived in both Canada and Idaho and have dealt with massive snowstorms. No one I know would buy ice unless they are planning on making margaritas. I have always packed bags with snow and have never had a problem.

You were so quick to take offense at my post, I wonder what your real problem is.

I frankly don't give a darn what the woman buys. I just though it odd, and I wasn't judging her. If you think that's what I did then you need to take a remedial reading comprehension class.
Have a nice day, sweetie - I do not care

where you have lived or what you have done. Your post was judgmental. And I have everything I need, thank you.
I'm having a great day - op

But I'm not your sweetie (thank god).

Enjoy being blissed-out on your ignorance.
Things that make you go hmmmm... - (you were the one who questioned it)
[ In Reply To ..]
most of us here didn't find it strange in any way. You did, for some reason.
I agree - someone else
[ In Reply To ..]
All you did was ask a simple question. However, on this board and with some people, that's enough to start a hate war. You said absolutely nothing wrong, and your attitude was not at all judgmental.

Ice may be to put in coolers. sm - thoughts on ice

[ In Reply To ..]
Folks put ice in coolers and then food they will be using during the storm and possible outages into the cooler. Rather than keep opening the fridge or freezer and spoiling your food. That's how it is often done in New England.

Also need water to flush toilets if you have well water....no electricity, cannot pump water into faucets or toilets. Lots of us are on well water not city water.

Problem with generators is you need gasoline to run them. All roads are closed in my state per order of governor until further notice. Gas stations were running out of gas yesterday. No supplies coming in via tanker trucks since highways all closed yesterday at noon and remain closed Saturday.

For if the temp warms up above freezing but - the power is still off - n/m

Silly Little Things That Make You HappySep 07, 2010
Sometimes the silliest, trivial little things make me smile. This morning, it's knowing that my daughter (just turned 21 on Saturday) is safe and secure at the camp at which she is working through the fall, enjoying her first job and finding her way in the world.  It's also looking over at my handsome hubby, sound asleep on the couch, remote in hand, looking completely at peace with our 2 little dogs next to him, one by his feet and the other by his side.  For some reason, ...

One Of These Things Is Not Like The OtherOct 04, 2016
The dedicated Trumpettes are rationalizing Trump's tax evasion by saying Clinton used the same loophole to avoid paying tax. In fact, I have used the same loophole when I was an independent contractor. Now here is why it is not the same. Trumps tax loss claimed is over 1 THOUSAND 3 HUNDRED TIMES (1300 times) Clinton's tax loss. In other words, Clinton claimed 0.07% of Trumps loss. Trump paid NO taxes and probably did not for 18 years. In contrast the Clinton's pai ...

How Are Things ImprovingApr 19, 2012
A poster below said, "Typical talkback. Let's talk about how things are improving."  I thought I would take the liberty in moving it to a new post.  For me personally, I can't see the improvment.  I'm paying more for everything and it's getting harder and harder to make ends meet.  When I see the news about the GSA and the blatent arrogance, it just infuriates me.  Can anyone site the improvement?    ...

Do You Think Things Are Worse...Aug 04, 2012
....since the Supreme Court gave corporations the same voice as individuals in supporting political candidates?  I sense that that's made things worse during this campaign.   I think these PACs and Super PACs are creating so much havoc, on both sides, and they're making politics even more confusing and muddled.  It's awful when a PAC comes out with advertising that favors one candidate or the other, and people assume that the campaign itself put out the ad, bu ...

How The Dems Do ThingsSep 06, 2012
1.  The entire DNC is being subsidized with a $10 million line of credit from Duke Energy. 2.  The CEO of Duke Energy is one of Obama's biggest contributors - $tens of thousands. 3.  Duke Energy has received over $200 million in stimulus money for "green jobs". So, while Elizabeth Warren was standing up on the podium whining about a "rigged economy", she was speaking over a microphone that was paid for with "rigging" of the first order. Good job, Dems!  You're R ...

Seeing Things On TV That I Am Thinking What?Jan 08, 2013
I saw 3 different things this morning that I am puzzled. First, people having baby ultrasounds in their homes inviting all the family for an ultrasound party to let them be the first (along with the couple) to view the baby. People doing the ultrasounds do tell the gender of the baby and that again is not 100% sure each time, even for people who routinely do ultrasound in medical settings. The people doing not medical, say no diagnosis of any kind made but as we all know not every pregnancy is a ...

Just To Lighten Things UpNov 30, 2016
In Chappaqua NY, the snow lay deep around the Clinton mansion, but that didn't stop Bill from taking a stroll around the grounds. Suddenly, he stopped dead in his tracks.  The Secret Service agent who was with him asked, "What is it, Mr. President?" Clinton's face was growing beet-red as he pointed a shaking finger at the ground.  There, written in the snow in an unmistakable shade of yellow, were the words "Bill Clinton is a dirty pedophile." Clinton demanded that the per ...

As it happens, in recent weeks I was the target of a trolling campaign and saw exactly how it works. It started when an obscure website published a post titled “CNN host Fareed Zakaria calls for jihad rape of white women.” The story claimed that in my “private blog” I had urged the use of American women as “sex slaves” to depopulate the white race. The post further claimed that on my Twitter account, I had written the following line: “Every death of a white person brings tears of j ...
