[ In Reply To ..]Rudimentary similarities between Souther’s “inadvertent” misrepresentation of the records violation incident and Palin’s Breakwater boondoggle are undeniable. He abused his position as an FBI agent to gain access to private information outside of his official capacity and reported it to local police officials based on concern over the safety of family members. Were his statements inconsistent, wrong or erroneous? Yes. Did he willfully lie? Don’t know. Maybe. Is this offensive? Of course, but the comparison stops there.
What he did not do is lie about it repeatedly, drag his denials throughout the investigative process at taypayers’ and personal expense, play victim or continue to abuse his position by bringing ethics charges against himself before a hand-picked Board that answers to him and call it the only “nonpartisan” venue capable of getting at the truth in an aborted attempt to escape ultimate ownership of personal responsibility and halt a runaway scandal. He owned up to it when confronted, the same way he did at the time he was censured by the FBI when the incident occur. For these reasons, it does not rise to the same level of ethics violation.
The bias of the report is found in more than one place, such as using the phrase Homeland Security fiasco attributable to Obama to describe a foot-dragging self-inflicted obstructive log-jam, downplaying the more likely root of the partisan conflict (possible unionization) and the fact that Lieberman and others who knew of the inconsistencies still supported his nomination, and using the word “ram” when referring to Reid’s filing for cloture on a 4-month-old nomination.
The purpose and direction the GOP’s latest escalation of digging in their heels indefinitely over what the White House knew and when is unclear. As inferred in the title, perhaps they may want to ratchet this up a notch or two and make more political hay out of the absence of a TSA director on Christmas Day. Who knows?
Personally, I think that moving forward and filling the position serves security interests better than protracting the process by providing the naysayers with a stage for 10 more rounds of partisan theatrics. The purported concerns over procedural protocols (advice and consent) seems disingenuous to me.
