7 Reasons - This hits it right on the head

Posted: Nov 21, 2012

Came across a very interesting article.  Gives some insight.  Couldn't quite put my finger on it, but this sums it up.

http://townhall.com/columnists/johnhawkins/2011/08/23/7_reasons_why_liberals_are_incapable_of_understanding_the_world/page/full/

;

I opened that site and got a Glenn Beck ad. Closed that, which then - brought up one on how to increase testosterone. :)

The article is there - I opened the link - it is there

[ In Reply To ..]
Besides, so what if a GB ad pops up, it doesn't change the content of the article.

All 7 dumb and wrong. BUT, see post above for a present - Conservative morality, compared to liberal. nm

To my reading, the two articles make some of the same points. - grits

The other one makes me think. This one just makes me roll my eyes. It's all in the tone, and the tone of this one is just more of the same old same old, "us versus them" rhetoric that wastes all of our time.

I prefer the other article's aim of understanding, not just pointing and laughing.

"John Hawkins is a professional blogger who runs Right Wing News." - sm

'Nuff said.

So what! The article is still precise. - if you're going to go down that road

[ In Reply To ..]
then you can say that about Huff, etc.

I think that depends on where your head is - (Hawkins is dim and jejune)

DDT? Are you serious? - RC

[ In Reply To ..]
How ironic that a Conservative is supporting a chemical that damages the reproductive system.

I don't care if you post articles about liberals, but could you at least find one that's well thought out?

Are you? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Awww....didn't like the article, huh?

The thing is it does not matter where it was written. The information written is accurate. All sites are written by people who give their viewpoint on issues.

One of the points that stood out to me, as I've seen here (and your replies proves it) is:

"Liberalism works like so: only liberals are credible sources of information. How do you know someone's liberal? He espouses liberal doctrine. So, no matter how plausible what you say may be, it will be ignored if you're not a liberal and if you are a liberal, of course, you probably agree with liberal views. This sort of close-mindedness makes liberals nearly impervious to any information that might undermine their beliefs."

That statement can even be verified here on this board, not to mention my liberal relatives who claim Fox and other conservatives sites are not credible, while expousing MSNBC and liberal sites as credible.

Then the statement is also true about liberals get up and read their local newspaper that has a liberal viewpoint, teachers at their kids schools are liberal, they listen to NPR which has a liberal viewpoint on the way home, and then turn on the nightly news which also skews leftward. It's the constant all day long brainwashing that makes it impossible for them to carry on a decent conversation if it falls outside of their box.

The following statement is also true "Liberalism is all about appearances, not outcomes. What matters to liberals is how a program makes them FEEL about themselves, not whether it works or not."

And it's also true that liberals view people as part of groups, not individuals (read all the posts written by liberals here and that will verify that).

Also, its true about liberals taking a dim view of personal responsibility and that liberals give themselves far too much credit for just being liberal (again proof is in the posters on this board).

So, in fact everything he wrote is true. Yes, he is a professional writer who runs Right Wing News. Right Wing News also has good articles that are true. If you are going to put down that site, then you need to include Huff, Daily Kos, etc.

You see, this is the way it works. People are human beings. There are people out there that read the news (that another person has written about), and they take the information and write a story about or expand further about it. That's how it works. Every news story, issues, etc is written by a human being. This article happens to be true. If you don't agree that's one thing, but it does not mean that it's wrong. It just means you don't agree.

Your reply has nothing to do with what I said. - RC

I'm trying to figure out what your point is. I don't care wing he resides in. DDT? DDT? Hello???
My reply has everything to do with what you posted - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Everything I posted has everything to do with your reply. Its in direct response to what you wrote. What do you mean you cannot figure out what my point it. I purposely made it easy to understand so there were be no confusion. If simple is too hard to understand let me know and I'll simplify it even more.

What is DDT? And write it once. You don't need to be rude! Hello??? yourself.
No, it does not. - RC
[ In Reply To ..]
I didn't say anything about right-wing media or anything you rambled on about. I talked about DDT. If you don't know what that is, perhaps you shouldn't jump in with long-winded responses.
Since DDT was such a small part of the article - I addressed the rest
[ In Reply To ..]
of what my post was about. You said "at least find one that is well thought out". I replied addressing that issue.

Maybe if you cannot handle some facts and trying to stay on topic you should not reply to me.
OMG. - RC
[ In Reply To ..]
My point was that if the author supports the use of DDT, which is linked to reproduction abnormalities, he is clearly not thinking straight (read: reliable).

You didn't know what DDT was, and so misunderstood my point. Then you proceeded to tell me how YOU needed to simplify YOUR response so I would understand it...oh, the irony.

Have a lovely, DDT-free day.

OMG is right - I read the article again - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
No where in the article does it say he supports DDT. Actually the opposite.

"...even though millions of people have died as a result."
You misread. - RC
[ In Reply To ..]
He states they died because there was no DDT.

"A ban on DDT makes liberals feel good about themselves because they're "protecting the environment" even though millions of people have died as a result."

He is talking about malaria.

Geezus.
OMG let it go already! - Al Fabbet
[ In Reply To ..]
The author of the article is probably talking about millions of people supposedly dying because of the ban... probably from malaria or other mosquito-related diseases. Seriously... you're so eager to confront RC that it's obvious you're grasping at straws. The author clearly thinks the ban on DDT is NOT a good thing... which definitely fits the description of not thinkng straight. Is that what all the cool kids are doing these days?
OMG you let it go - sm

Seven piece bucket of crispy rebuttal - Fanatical Hypocrite

While I found the article interesting, I must disagree (as I'm a liberal and I apparently don't know no better.) And no, it's not because of the source, though admittedly I threw up a little when the ad for Glenn Beck's book popped up.

Point 1: All ideologies create a feedback loop. Conservatives only believe their news, we only believe ours and we both think the other guy's talking heads are crazy/corrupt/evil. This is a major problem in our country, yet it's a difficult one to change. For instance, if I tell a conservative to just trust that MSNBC is fair and balanced, would they? If someone tells me to trust Fox News, would i? We all stand by our convictions for better or worse and we all like news that agrees with us.

Point 2: Liberal media saturation is a strange concept. Every day I am exposed to hundreds of opinions by people I strongly disagree with. Some are far right, some are further left than I like, and some are so insane neither side knows what to think. While it's true that Hollywood is a fairly liberal place, conservatives can isolate themselves as much as a liberal can. We can all surround ourselves in a bubble of our own propaganda if we so choose and it seems most of us do. There is so much conservative-biased news (and liberal-biased) that you could go your whole life only hearing your own opinion if you wanted. The reason both sides feel that they are underrepresented is because we dismiss what we call the truth as neutral. For instance, if you know the sky is blue and I say it's green, and we had two weather stations and each agreed with one of us, you wouldn't say that there was an equal number of polarized weather stations, because blue sky is the truth and so it doesn't count as polarized weather news. It's easier to spot the alien culture in the room than your own.

Point 3: I actually agree with the basic concept here. We do tend to spend money first and then figure out if we just spent money the right way. But that has to be dealt with case by case and not as a generalization. One of the cases he mentioned was DDT. See RC's posts for more info on that. I see this as part of the logical disconnect on the conservative side that human beings and the environment are somehow separate. Any chemical designed to kill another animal, typically has a bad effect on us. Human beings tend to suffer dangerous side effects when poisoned.

Point 4: Moral relativism is a tough one. Liberals generally have more varied (though I believe not weaker) morals because of less strict religious/traditional beliefs. However, the attempt to juxtapose liberal moral relativism to conservative moral absolutism is where I think the train derails. Partly because I know a fairly equal number of relativist conservatives and absolutist liberals. It is nothing more than cultural, religious and personal differences between parties and individuals ballooned to unnatural proportions.

Point 5: I haven't personally found this to be true. Group thinking is one of the most common human traits and has been so for a million years. I've never seen a big difference in this between parties. Human beings naturally congregate into groups and then lose part of their individualist tendencies. People belong to families, religions, jobs, countries, states, etc. While I think liberals tend to externally identify ("I'm a vegan, so I'm better!") more with a group, I think conservatives more vehemently internally identify with a group ("Rush Limbaugh is right about everything!")

Point 6: Personal responsibility is a tough one to quantify. Liberals probably are more likely to sympathize with an individual down on their luck and blame social phenomena, while conservatives may be more likely to blame the individual. Whose right on that is hard to say and again needs a case by case basis. Plus, I'm not sure it's all that true of a stereotype for either side. Either way, I'd rather be too much of a bleeding heart and help someone who didn't deserve it, than not help someone who did.

Point 7: Yeah, we are a bit egotistical about being liberal:) Part of that is because we believe our way of thinking to be superior. It doesn't matter what you're ideology is, you believe that ideology to be superior. Otherwise, why ascribe to it? Now, being vain about it is a bad thing. And I know a lot of Starbucks liberals as I call them who drape themselves in it to show off. I find it annoying and ridiculous. The other liberals I know who I call friends, don't talk about it in public much. We don't have any snarky bumperstickers or go around laughing at conservatives. Both sides have their show offs, nothing new about that and nothing particularly partisan about it either.

So, in summation, while I found this article interesting, I feel it's nothing more than a fluff piece about party stereotypes. Both sides are doing that a lot and we are all getting shrunken down into rather tight fitting red or blue straight jackets.

Mmm, crispy rebuttal... - anon

10 Reasons Not To Get The Flu ShotOct 27, 2010
The verdict is out on flu shots. Many medical experts now agree it is more important to protect yourself and your family from the flu vaccine than the flu itself. Let’s take a look at the reasons behind this verdict: 1.) There is a total lack of real evidence that young children even benefit from flu shots.  A systematic review of 51 studies involving 260,000 children age 6 to 23 months found no evidence that the flu vaccine is any more effective than a placebo. Also the shots are on ...
