Dog licks me to death, cant even lay down for a

Posted: Jan 17, 2013

climbing all over me, licking and rubbing his head up against me. This dog is extremely affectionate and loving to the point of annoying. We have only had him a couple weeks, a friend of ours found him outside with frost-bitten paws; he if fixed and has a chip in his check with ID tags on his collar and everything. We tried contacting the owner and they did'nt want him and seemed to care less and the adoption agency gave us the option of switching him over to our name as legal owners. He is a pretty good size pitbull and has really grown in the short time we have had him. My husband usually takes him out to go potty, but he's out taking care of business so I took him and he practically drug me through the neighborhood. When we are gone away from home for a couple of hours and come back he jumps all over us when we walk through the door. He knows how to give hugs believe it or not and he whines and wimpers whenever hubby or I leave the house. He's a real cuttie, but I dont know what to do about all the licking and how to get him to stop!! I dont mind it a little bit, but he licks my face, my harms, my hair or whatever. Any ideas on how to train him to cut that out? There are days I have dog slobber all over my clothes from him wanting to be all over me. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance.;

I don't have any ideas, but say enjoy him. sm - KKL

He sounds like a sweetie pie and very loving and grateful to have a loving home. You are very fortunate. Maybe some dog obedience classes?

She too loves to lick. I allow a little bit til i'm tired of it...and tell her to lay down. She knows that command so will lay down on my chest, beside me, on the floor or wherever we happen to be. I'd encourage a few training things, like sit, lay down, stay, the basics. This should help when he is in love with kisses. just make sure he is not trying to dominate.
Best of luck. good for you rescuing! Mine is too.

Thank you, I am going to try training him the basics with - treats, like sit, stay etc.

Problem is, I have got to get past giving him the treats just for being cute and only give them he does something I tell him to do so that he will learn. He listens to hubby, but I guess Im not firm enough.

Thanks. - see message

He is a sweetie pie. He's like a big baby with a loud bark. He only barks when someone comes to the door, but other than that he's pretty quiet.

He cracks me up with his behavior sometimes because he sleeps in the bed with me and hubby and he acts like he's human. I found out he does not like car rides, but everytme I get my keys to go somewhere he goes running to the door and kinda looks as if to see if I am going to get his leash to take him along.

When I take him, he runs right to the car and jumps right in, but then he will start whining once get going in the car and began to pass gas like he has a nervous stomach from the car ride, so I have stopped taking him places although he still runs to the door looking to go with me whenever I leave.

Its funny because the first week we had him, he passed gas all the time and hubby and I were constantly spraying with pet deorderizer so now when he farts, he actually leaves the room and comes back but of course we can still smell it.

He has gotten better with the gas thing though, I think it was just his nerves the first few days and having to get use to being in a new enviroment. He passes gas now when we feed him stuff we shouldn't give him like table food. If I could just get him to stop licking and slobbering all over me, he would be fine.

OMG, this post is just so funny - Sorry, I have nothing to add

[ In Reply To ..]
But I laughed out loud when I read this!
Yeah, I think he caught on to us spraying and knew - we were talking about him when
[ In Reply To ..]
ever he would pass gas. So now when he does it, he gets this shameful look on his face and leaves the room and comes back a few minutes later. Its actually pretty cute that he knows we know he's passing gas, but its not funny having to smell it. Like I said though, he seems to have gotten over that phase and doesn't seem to do it much anymore.

Farting dog.... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I have a farting dog too, actually 2 of them. Whenever my dog gets nervous or excited, she lets out this squeeky fart. It is too funny. One time my husband had people over from work and she sat down right next to me and ripped one and this woman just gave me a look like I was crazy, so I had to say it was the dog, but I am pretty sure she did not beleive me. At least her farts don't smell. On the other hand, my other dog's farts don't make noise, but they are absolutely noxious, enough to make you gag.

Just an aside, enjoy your new best friend, but watch him carefully because he seems to have come from a shady circumstance and you have not had him long enough to really know his personality. He might be trying to assert dominance with the kisses, probably not, but you can't be too careful, especially around kids. Good luck to you guys!
Can explain what you mean by asserting dominance with - the kisses? This is a pitbull and
[ In Reply To ..]
I know they can be a bit aggressive depending on the owners. We are gentle with him, but I dont know what the previous owner was like or why they didn't seem to want him back.

I have grandbabies and have'nt really had the opportunity to have them around him yet. My husband has a kennel so worse case scenario, we could put him in there when the little ones are over. But I would be interested in knowing what you mean by asserting dominance with the kisses, the other poster mentioned something to that affect too, Thanks.

I would definitly read this. My advice to you is to call your vet or local shelter and have your dog's temperment tested before you expose your grandkids to him. Some dogs do not like kids at all for one reason or another and you cannot take that risk with your grandkids. I am sure your vet could give you better advice, but I certainly would talk to him before you let the kids go near him. I have a dalmatian who loves kids and is very patient with them, but hates certain people and has bitten before. She did not do any real damage, but I am careful with her around strangers.

I hope it works out. It sounds like he got a bad shake and he's lucky you found him, but you just can't be too careful. People have problems with pitts, but I would do the same with any new dog when kids are involved.
Thank you very much. I will check the link out. - appreciate the feedback.

Aww, I would be crazy about you, too, if you saved me!!! He sounds pretty young, so this is normal behavior, IMO. We have raised Rottweilers who used to have the stigma PitBulls have. About the dominance thing, with ours when they were young, we made sure they knew WE ARE THE ALPHA. Once that is established, it should help your situation.

A couple things we did was, we made sure we could get down with our rottie and EAT WITH HIM without ANY aggressive behavior. It's simple things like this that helps to establish who is in charge.

He sounds like a sweet and very happy dog!! I hope he has a great life with you and your family. Bless you for keeping him. Many folks would not or could not.

could be dominance or obsessing - OHMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I know all these things are cute when they are puppies, but you need to set boundaries now or it will get out of hand. For instance, jumping on you when you come home. You wouldn't let a child jump all over you, so don't allow the dog to do it.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to cuddle with your dog... I love to cuddle with mine!... but YOU must decide, not the dog, when it is appropriate. When he tries to climb on you, gently but firmly let him know that he's not allowed. When he's calm, then you can go to HIM and give affection.

You should watch Cesar Millan, the Dog Whisperer. I've learned a lot about dog communication from him. He's amazing! He'll teach you how to let your dog know that you are the alpha, and how to walk your dog & not the other way around! My dog used to drag me down the street but now she stays by my side.

When my dog was a puppy, the best thing I got was a ball with a hole in it to put treats inside. I would give it to her when I left the house. She was so happy to get the ball, she had no anxiety about me leaving. To this day, when I'm leaving and she sees the ball come out, she looks at me like, "Okay, hurry up and leave so I can have that thing!"

My dog also likes to lick. Sometimes I think it is an obsessive thing. I might let her for a minute but then I let her know that's enough and she stops. Sometimes if they are obsessing it is just because they need some exercise. Make sure your dog gets playtime and walks so he will be calm and restful.

I'm so glad you are giving this guy a loving home. I can't imagine my life without a dog in it. They give you so much love. I actually love my dog more than most people I know. We can learn a lot from them about loyalty and affection, and they remind us how important it is to take time out to laugh and play!

Enjoy your new family member!

Dog licking - FloridaMT

We have an almost 3 y.o. part pit bull, part boxer and he is the most loving of our 3 dogs. They all jump on us when we come home, even if only gone for an hour. Guess they just love us and missed us. Same with your dog. Pits are the best and get a bad rap. However, I do have one suggestion that might work. I use an empty soda can with about 5-6 pennies thrown in it. Two of my 3 don't like it, but the other one it doesn't phase. When they are getting out of control, all I have to say is "your gonna get the can" and they stop. The object is to shake the can of pennies at them when they are being "bad". It just scares them a bit but it gets the point across. Found the suggestion on Google when I was trying to find ways to get my chow chow puppy to stop biting, even though it was friendly biting. I just keep the can in the kitchen cupboard and use it when guests come over, etc., to control the 2 wild ones we have. Enjoy your new friend. If his/her owners didn't want him back, that is probably the reason he is over affectionate to you. Poor dog just needs some love. One of ours was a stray we found in California while there with the Navy. She made the cross country trip back to FL with us in August. :)

We have this gadget that my husband got from the dentist. It looks like a hypodermic needle, but you put water in it to squirt debris out of a tooth extraction. Anyway, my dog HATES that thing! When she was acting up a couple of times he squirted her with it to distract her and she learned real quick. Now, if telling her no doesn't work, all we have to do is point to it and she lies right down.

The funny thing is, she used to get in the shower with me. She'd bring a toy and toss it around. She has no problem with baths, and loves to jump in the lake at the dog park. But that little squirter? No way! lol

dominating - doxielover

[ In Reply To ..]
On the dominating question not quite sure how to explain that behavior (u can google), but my mini doxie attempts to climb up my chest so she can lick me to death. I can just tell with her climb... and think to myself omg what would this be like if she were 100lbs! :-) I like the other post review about EXERCISING your dog. This is absolutely the best thing you can do for your pit. He/she needs to expend lots of energy.

Dog Licking - kitteh lover

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't know much about dogs but I took in an abandoned kitteh; he was also a licker and quite affectionate. I found a spray bottle was effective in extinguishing that behavior that was so obnoxious but kitteh still loves me as he associates the mean spray bottle and not me with the unpleasant sensation of a little squirt of cold water in his face when he starts licking me. He still licks my finger once in a while which is okay but this constant annoying licking has stopped. I wonder if this might work for your dog?

I know the system can be flawed. I know sometimes the wrong person is convicted of stealing, or whatever. But, when the penalty has escalated to the death penalty, any doubt, any evidence, no matter when it is found, nothing matters, it all should be considered and we should never put a person to death if there is any doubt at all.
