Opinions on NFL action on Patriots cheating?

Posted: Jan 21, 2015

I think they should make them play the game again and postpone the SuperBowl--LOL...like that would ever happen.

Maybe they should kick out their quarterback, although that cripples the SuperBowl game.  Even if Sea Hawks win they will feel cheated.

They should definitely kick off the other teams balls, just randomly, no rhyme nor reason, completely at the ref discretion  (another conspiracy theory to be born).

Between Spygate and now deflate-gate, it's obvious they will do anything to win and makes you wonder what they've done that hasn't been caught. They should be fined, responsible parties barred from Superbowl, even if it's Beli-cheat, and get the dregs of the draft.

Cheating is cheating. The Pats should not be allowed - Disgusting!

to play in the Super Bowl. It's simple, they cheated. Olympic athletes who used performance enhancing drugs were stripped of their medals as if they never competed. Lance Armstrong was stripped of his Tour de France titles for his cheating.

If you cheat to win, than you do not get the win. If you are a repeat offender, as in the case of Belichick, than you shouldn't get to compete PERIOD.

Belichick can disavow all knowledge of the deflated balls, but we all know that's a bunch a bull. Brady had to know he was playing with deflated balls as well, so he is just as guilty. And I would imagine at least one of the officials is culpable as well.

I think it is reprehensible. We teach our children to play fair, not to cheat. And now we have these grown men making a mockery out of honesty and fair play?!?! They get a slap on the wrist and a paltry fine (compared to the millions they make), but they still get to compete in the championship game that they cheated to get to!?!?

I am not a Seahawks fan, but I will definitely be cheering for them come Super Bowl Sunday.

I say they should forfeit their AFC championship - to the Colts

[ In Reply To ..]
No Super Bowl. Not eligible for any post season games/championship games for the next three years, regardless of their season standing. Last to pick in the draft for the next three years. A $500,000.00 team fine. A $500,000.00 mandatory donation to a national sports association for children. Quarterback and Head Coach banned from entry to the Football Hall of Fame in Canton Ohio.

I know it's a harsh punishment, but it's the AFC Championship game leading to the Super Bowl, and they are repeat offenders that obviously have not learned a thing. They deserve no less, and it should also discourage this type of behavior in the future.

Totally Agree! - Disgusting!

Both teams use the same ball, so even if the balls were tampered with, wouldn't it benefit both teams?

Past issue of spying. Was that proved?

Maybe these accusations are bitterness over the extraordinary success over the years of Belichick and the Patriots.

Both teams do not use the same balls. - Disgusting!

Each provides a certain number of game balls. The balls are switched out each possession. For example, the Pats' offense uses one of its own game balls and then the Colts' offense will their own game balls.

Spying was proven and Belichick was fined. - Each team has

a set of regulation footballs that are provided by the home team. In addition there are 12 new in box footballs for kicking.

Digest of Rules Main

Ball
The home club shall have 36 balls for outdoor games and 24 for indoor games available for testing with a pressure gauge by the referee two hours prior to the starting time of the game to meet with League requirements. Twelve (12) new footballs, sealed in a special box and shipped by the manufacturer, will be opened in the officials’ locker room two hours prior to the starting time of the game. These balls are to be specially marked with the letter "k" and used exclusively for the kicking game.

Under NFL rules, each team is provided with 12 balls to use on offense during the game. The balls are required to made available for inspection and approval by the game referee two hours and fifteen minutes before kickoff. The balls are required to be inflated between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds per square inch and weigh between 14 and 15 ounces. Teams are not allowed to alter the balls in any way once they are approved by the officiating crew.

So the balls had to be - Annie

I can believe possibly one or two footballs losing air due to the weather, but not 11 out of 12. You'd get better odds in Vegas. I watched his press conference this morning, the problem for me at least is that he has lost all credibility. Not to mention the Colts didn't seem to have a problem with their footballs in the same environment.

I'm not a fan of any of the teams involved, and I am certainly not a Seahawk fan, I'm a Broncos fan, but I would like to see fair play throughout the NFL. A few years ago we heard about the Saints paying players to hurt and disable other players. There were more reports of misdeeds by NFL players and the NFL either brushed it aside or gave a slap on the wrist. Now that the fans are watching more closely, the NFL may have to actually do something. One of the sports articles I read this morning was titled "America VS Belichick." I am keeping up with the news, trying to find logic. It's no wonder my political friend liked this post, politics and the NFL seem to somewhat similar as of late, they are both a hot mess!

I usually post on political board--this post - was fun--I don't know a thing

[ In Reply To ..]
about football, but it sure is trying to take over the news cycle!

Interesting points you guys made.

I like the one where they forfeit to the Colts. I think that's the answer.

I figured they played with the same ball too, but I think they may kick off and start possession with their own ball. With the score being 45-7 (I think), doesn't the other team kick off (the one that didn't score), so they should have started with Colt balls a lot?

No ball jokes, please.

My political friend - Broncos fan

[ In Reply To ..]
To answer your question, when the teams kicked off (not always after scoring) the receiving team only has that football for the kickoff. There are 12 footballs used just for kicking, the other 24 (12 for each team) are used after after the kick, just for offense.

I will have something for you later. I gathered some info last night and I will post it later today. Maybe someday I will need you to help explain politics to me. All I really know about the political arena is that it makes me angry (a lot), and much like the NFL lately, its a hot mess!

Thanks--I realized I had thought wrong - sm

about the kick off thing, but never had any idea that they switched balls after the kick. OMG. I saw today where the Pat Coach/owner? said he had no idea about ball inflation....yeah, right. Whole lot of guys on TV saying "psi or whatever that means." Yeah, right. Whole lot of CYA going on. Just like politics, just football politics-LOL.

Sounds like they are going to do a whole lot of nothing about this. There is no sanction in writing about cheating with equipment or some such nonsense. Maybe somebody will move the goal post on one end or the other, just for fun.

Sad, that they have demeaned the sport. I don't really like football, but it is a major force in this world, might as well try to understand what I can.
Rules of the game - Broncos fan
[ In Reply To ..]
I've always liked football, I used to watch it with my dad when I was very young, I've always been a Broncos fan, even when they sucked. The news conference you saw this morning, that was Bill Belichick, he is the head coach of the Patriots. I don't believe that he knew nothing about the rules of the football itself, he's the head coach for heaven's sake! That's kind of like Captain Kirk of the USS Enterprise saying he didn't know anything about Dilithium Crystals! He also pointed the finger at Brady the quarterback (who I believe is also guilty of the deed). I missed Brady's news conference, I just saw a few clips on the evening news, so I will watch it on line later this evening.

Over the last few years the NFL has given out punishments (slaps on the wrist mostly) for various infractions where there were no hard and fast rules, until the media got a hold of the story and forced their hand. Still, they would prefer to look the other way. I really do believe what I said in my post above about making the Patriots forfeit the game to the Colts (as well as the other punishments I stated), I think that would be just punishment, but they're not going to do that. With the public and the media watching, the NFL may be forced to slap both wrists instead of just one, but that will be about it.

PSI means pounds per square inch, in regard to how much air pressure is in a football (see my other post above). Below is a brief, easy to understand basics about the game. Once you understand it a little better maybe the game will grow on you. Perhaps the same thing will happen with me and politics, I don't understand politicians, there seems to be no logic there, and don't even get me started on the NAFTA, CAFTA thing, I mean what did they think was going to happen in 20 years, jobs leaving our country and they act so surprised. I know some say that there was good that came out of it, I have friends that even told what the good stuff was, but I still don't see it, but that's a conversation for another time (and another thread).

I won't be watching the Super Bowl this year, and if anyone is looking for an alternative sporting even I highly recommend the Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet channel (I watch it every year).

Beginner's Guide to Football

One 11-man team has possession of the football. It is called the offense and it tries to advance the ball down the field-by running with the ball or throwing it - and score points by crossing the goal line and getting into an area called the end zone.

The other team (also with 11 players) is called the defense. It tries to stop the offensive team and make it give up possession of the ball. If the team with the ball does score or is forced to give up possession, the offensive and defensive teams switch roles (the offensive team goes on defense and the defensive team goes on offense). And so on, back and forth, until all four quarters of the game have been played.

In order to make it easier to coordinate the information in this digest, the topics discussed generally follow the order of the rule book.
THE FIELD
The field measures 100 yards long and 53 yards wide. Little white markings on the field called yard markers help the players, officials, and the fans keep track of the ball. Probably the most important part of the field is the end zone. It's an additional 10 yards on each end of the field. This is where the points add up! When the offense - the team with possession of the ball-gets the ball into the opponent's end zone, they score points.
TIMING

Games are divided into four 15-minute quarters, separated by a 12-minute break at halftime. There are also 2-minute breaks at the end of the first and third quarters as teams change ends of the field after every 15 minutes of play. At the end of the first and third quarters, the team with the ball retains possession heading into the following quarter. That is not the case before halftime. The second half starts with a kickoff in the same way as the game began in the first quarter.

Each offensive team has 40 seconds from the end of a given play until they must snap of the ball for the start of the next play, otherwise they will be penalized.

The clock stops at the end of incomplete passing plays, when a player goes out of bounds, or when a penalty is called. The clock starts again when the ball is re-spotted by an official.

If a game is tied at the end of regulation, a 15-minute overtime period will be played. In the NFL, this is sudden death and the first team to score wins. Possession is determined before the period begins by a coin toss.
THE PLAYERS

Each team has 3 separate units: the offense (see section below), those players who are on the field when the team has possession of the ball; the defense (see section below), players who line up to stop the other team's offense; and special teams that only come in on kicking situations (punts, field goals, and kickoffs). Only 11 players are on the field from one team at any one time.

To see how the players line up click here
THE KICKOFF

A game starts with the kickoff. The ball is placed on a kicking tee at the defense's 30-yard line, and a special kicker (a "placekicker") kicks the ball to the offense A kick return man from the offense will try to catch the ball and advance it by running. Where he is stopped is the point from which the offense will begin its drive, or series of offensive plays. When a kickoff is caught in the offense's own end zone, the kick returner can either run the ball out of the end zone, or kneel in the end zone to signal a touchback - a sign to stop the play. The ball is then placed on the 20-yard line, where the offense begins play.
FIRST DOWN

All progress in a football game is measured in yards. The offensive team tries to get as much "yardage" as it can to try and move closer to the opponent's end zone. Each time the offense gets the ball, it has four downs, or chances, in which to gain 10 yards. If the offensive team successfully moves the ball 10 or more yards, it earns a first down, and another set of four downs. If the offense fails to gain 10 yards, it loses possession of the ball. The defense tries to prevent the offense not only from scoring, but also from gaining the 10 yards needed for a first down. If the offense reaches fourth down, it usually punts the ball (kicks it away). This forces the other team to begin its drive further down the field.
MOVING THE BALL - The Run and the Pass

A play begins with the snap. At the line of scrimmage (the position on the field where the play begins), the quarterback loudly calls out a play in code and the player in front of him, the center, passes, or snaps the ball under his legs to the quarterback. From there, the quarterback can either throw the ball, hand it off, or run with it.
THE RUN

There are two main ways for the offense to advance the ball. The first is called a run. This occurs when the quarterback hands the ball off to a running back, who then tries to gain as many yards as possible by eluding defensive players. The quarterback is also allowed to run with the ball.
THE PASS

The other alternative to running the ball is to throw it. Or as they say in football, pass it! Usually, the quarterback does the passing, though there are times when another player may pass the ball to confuse the defense. Actually, anyone on the offensive team is allowed to pass the ball as long as the pass is thrown from behind the line of scrimmage. A pass is complete if the ball is caught by another offensive player, usually the "wide receiver" or "tight end." If the ball hits the ground before someone catches it, it is called an incomplete pass.
THE TACKLE

The defense prevents the offense from advancing the ball by bringing the ball carrier to the ground. A player is tackled when one or both of his knees touch the ground. The play is then over. A play also ends when a player runs out of bounds.
SCORING

The object of the game is to score the most points. There are four ways to score points in football.
TOUCHDOWN = 6 POINTS

A touchdown is the biggest single score in a football game. It is worth six points, and it allows the scoring team an opportunity to attempt to get an extra point. To score a touchdown, the ball must be carried across the goal line into the end zone, caught in the end zone, or a fumble recovered in the end zone, or an untouched kickoff recovered in the end zone by the kicking team.
EXTRA POINT and the TWO-POINT CONVERSION = 1 or 2 POINTS

Immediately following a touchdown, the ball is placed at the opponent's two-yard line, where the offense has two options. Usually the offense will kick an extra point, also called the point after touchdown, conversion, or PAT. If the offense successfully kicks the ball through the goal posts, it earns one point. The offense can also score two points by running or throwing the ball into the end zone in the same manner as you would score a touchdown. Since going for two points is more difficult than kicking an extra point, the offense generally chooses to kick the extra point.
FIELD GOAL = 3 POINTS

If the offense cannot score a touchdown, it may try to kick a field goal. Field goals are worth three points and often are the deciding plays in the last seconds of close games. They can be attempted from anywhere on the field on any down, but generally are kicked from inside the defense's 45-yard line on fourth down. For a field goal to be "good", the placekicker (or field goal kicker) must kick the ball through the goal-post uprights and over the crossbar. The defense tries to block the kick and stop the ball from reaching the goal post.
SAFETY = 2 POINTS

The safety is worth two points. A safety occurs when the offensive ball carrier is tackled behind his own goal line.
TURNOVERS

While trying to advance the football to the end zone, the offense may accidentally turn the ball over to the defense in one of two ways:
THE FUMBLE

When the ball carrier or passer drops the ball, that's a fumble. Any player on the field can recover the ball by diving on it or he can run with it. The team that recovers a fumble either gets-or retains-possession of the ball.
THE INTERCEPTION

An aggressive defense can regain possession of the ball by catching (intercepting) passes meant for players on the other team. Both fumble recoveries and interceptions can be run back into the end zone for touchdowns.
THE TWO SIDES OF THE BALL
THE OFFENSE

Whichever team has possession of the ball is the offense. While only the quarterback, the wide receivers and tight ends, and the running backs can legally handle the ball, it is the quarterback who is the leader of the team and the playmaker. In fact, he's a man of many talents - he not only throws the ball, he outlines each play to his team.
THE OFFENSIVE PLAYERS

The quarterback ("QB") passes or hands off the ball.
The center snaps the ball to the QB and blocks the defense.
2 guards and 2 tackles keep the defense at bay.
2/4 wide receivers catch the ball thrown by the QB.
1 or 2 running backs take the ball and run with it.
1 or 2 tight ends block the defense and can also catches passes.

THE DEFENSE

The job of the defense is to stop the offense. The 11 men on the defensive team all work together to keep the offense from advancing toward the defense's end zone.
THE DEFENSIVE PLAYERS

Linebackers defend against the pass, and push forward to stop the run or tackle the QB.
The defensive line (ends and tackles) battles head-to-head against the offensive line.
Cornerbacks and safeties defend against the pass from the QB to the wide receiver and help to stop the run.

Further developments in Deflate-gate - Broncos fan

It seems the Patriots have had a problem with deflated footballs in the regular season, and the NFL knew about it, yet nothing was done. It does make you wonder how far back this has been going on. According to some very well known quarterbacks, there is no way Brady could not have known, and I agree with that. He needs to man up and come forward, but he is probably going to blame the ball-boy.

One of the things that confuses me is that the NFL knows about the many infractions that have come to light over the past few years, yet do nothing, but college rakes them over the coals whether they knew about the infraction or not.

A couple of years ago when several of the players at Ohio State sold some of their football memorabilia (two of the student football players were also implicated in drug trafficking, so that was more serious)but they all were suspended, Coach Tressel paid $250,000 in fines and ultimately lost his job because he had prior knowledge. The entire team lost five football scholarships for three years and there was a postseason ban, so no chance of championship games.

Harsher still was Penn State in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal. The scholarship reduction was the most significant sanction. Penn State vacated wins from 1998 to 2011, was hit with a $60 million fine, and banned from the postseason from 2012 to 2015. In this case I believe the students suffered for something they knew nothing about and/or had no control over. Every football player between the years 1998 and 2011 had ever won a championship, a football award, those accomplishments became null and void. It wasn't their fault.

The NFL on the other hand just want to look the other way.
Very well written. nm - Agree with you.

The NFL is run by the owners who are in it to MAKE MONEY! He doesn't think they are going to do anything more than slap the Patriots on the wrists. Now, maybe if the public did something about it en masse, like maybe not showing up for football games, maybe even the Super Bowl, they might do something about it but that will never happen.

The Patriots get caught *again* skirting the rules. Enough already. I dislike hearing of any team cheating, but this team in particular...well, maybe I just dislike them intensely because I will always be suspicious about how they beat the Eagles in the 2005 SB. This may be the 1st SB I do not watch in decades. Don't want the Patriots to win, can't stand the Seahawks fans (I live near Seattle and so many bandwagoners, only vying for weirdest dressed, don't give a hoot about the team).

I was really shocked at the score for the Colts versus the Patriots. Colts are not that bad per game often.

I wish they would give the Colts to go for the superbowl, but if not, I hope the Patriots get really creamed.

Seems to me that they just need to have balls not from each team but from one source, the place they are playing and all should be inspected often.

We're going to kick their butt at the SuperBowl anyway - 12
