Loss of smell

Posted: Jan 30, 2015

Anybody had this or know of someone who did?  About 1.5 years ago I got a sinus infection, turned into bronchitis and I was sick for seriously four months.  Now, still to this day I have very little sense of smell.  My sense of smell may come back in very short spurts, and by short I mean 10-15 seconds.  I may catch a whiff of perfume or something and then right back to zero smell.  I can stick something as strong as coffee under my nose and smell nothing.  I can still taste though, that's odd.

I have searched the web and all of these sites say that when you lose your sense of smell you are usually dead wtihin five years!!!  I'm 39 years old!!!  I don't have money for ENT appointments, surgery or anything like that.  Is there anyone that can alleviate my concerns?  Also of note is that I periodically get stuffiness in my ears, so was wondering if maybe eustachian tube dysfunction could play a role and is there anything I can do that is affordable?  TIA

This is probably associated with your sinus infection. Do you have allergies? My sister had this happen, thought due to allergies. Her taste was affected, too. After a long while it just cleared up. She saw her ENT/ allergy guy who did not have much to offer. She just resigned herself to the situation, managed to lose some weight while she could not taste or smell very well, and when it went she gained the weight back! Anyway, there was nothing medically to be done for her, except a course of steroids, which did not make any difference. Your sounds like the same sort of thing. Try not to worry about it, just wait it out - could be a while - and maybe you can lose some weight, also (if you need to). Good luck.

I lost my sense of smell 10 years ago. It wasn't due to allergies or infections, it was due to a meningioma located in the olfactory groove. After surgery to remove it, I was left with no smell or taste. Not flavors, anyway - I can still taste sweet, salty, bitter and sour with the taste buds on my tongue, but can't tell the difference between flavors, such as orange vs strawberry, chocolate vs banana, etc.

I never heard about that "you'll be dead in 10 years" thing you mentioned! I don't really miss smell or taste that much. When people ask me what it's like not to be able to taste, I tell them it's like how some people see in color, and some see in black and white. I taste in "black and white".

I do have to be very careful about my smoke detectors, however, because I can't smell smoke if something is burning. I also can't tell when food is spoiled, so sometimes end up throwing stuff out just to be safe.

Although I miss being able to smell roses, or the ocean or a pine forest, not being able to smell can sometimes be a blessing.

My mother worked with a lady - who had lost her sense of smell

[ In Reply To ..]
years before. She was in her 40s when mom worked with her, but I don't know her age when she lost the sense. As I recall she lived into her late 80s. Is there a medical university near you? I worked for a residency program at a university for many years and I know they have (well, had) reduced rates for people with unusual conditions/study groups. Good luck

Those researchers also said ... - sm

If you are worried, see a doctor, but you just said you did not lose it because it comes back for short periods.

The researchers were talking about anosmia in, apparently, the elderly. Not about people who can't smell due to colds, sinusitis, or stuffy noses. They even pointed that out.

How Do I Get Rid Of Old Cat Urine Smell?Sep 16, 2013
Long story short, we had a male cat in our house for 3 years. Before he was fixed, he sprayed or urinated everywhere. This cat has been gone for over 2 years (roommate moved out and got rid of cat because we did not want it after all that mess but he went to a very nice home so he is happy). Anyway, since the cat left 2+ years ago, we have repainted every room in our house with that Refresh paint, shampooed every carpet 2-3 times a year, threw out anything he peed on, ripped up carpet in the din ...

Onion Fingers SmellDec 15, 2014
Wish we had a food board, because on the gab board things get kind of heavy, but for anyone interested: Hubby and I chop onions all the time and have trouble removing the smell from our fingers, no matter what we do with soap and water. Well, I had read somewhere that putting salt on your hands/fingers and mixing with water to make a coarse paste works. And darn it, it works. It's not perfect, because the onion smell gets under the nails, but it sure takes the edge off. Just wet your h ...

Is There A Way To Rid Cigarette Smoke Smell From Back YardsApr 04, 2010
We have a new neighbor who moved next door within the past couple weeks.  Our backyards are ajoining, and only within 5-10 feet of each other.  She smokes quite heavily and we can't enjoy our back yard because it smells like cigarettes out back.  Is there a product or anything I can do to get rid of the smell.  You would think that being out in the open the smell would dissipate but it doesn't.  It lingers and it stinks really bad.  It's getting to a ...

Hearing Loss....smJun 24, 2012
After more than 40 years of MT'ing, I have lost 80% hearing in left ear and 10% in right ear.  This, according to doc, is definitely due to constant sound assault on my ears for all of these years.  I now need dual hearing aids; the left ear to compensate for severe hearing loss and the right ear to prevent hearing loss.  I will be getting them within the next week.  My real concern is whether I will be able to wear either my in-the-ear headset or over-the-head head ...
