"President Obama, if we put the Constitution on a teleprompter, will you read it?";
Good point, and maybe he would. But would he - understand what it means?
[ In Reply To ..]
nm
Now really, you guys. He used to be a constitutional law professor. - It's very short, BTW. Anyone bothered to read
[ In Reply To ..]
it? I studied it in class and long ago memorized my favorite sections, though the First Amendment is the only part I can still rattle off verbatim. These days I have to research to find out what current thought is in order to understand most arguments about it.
My guess is the typical person here who hammers about the Constitution has never studied it in college, has never studied it privately, and wouldn't be able to explain what anything but the Second Amendment is about--and that only extremely, extremely imperfectly. It might be worth noting that many books have been written about what "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed" should mean. Thick, hard to read books. We're not talking Ann Coulter here.
I've been curious about this - Fanatical Hypocrite

for a while now. I'm seriously not trying to start a big debate because I honestly don't care (us liberals got our fair share of "Bush-can't-talk" jokes in and it's you guys turn - that and I have nothing against poking fun at any sitting president), but where did this whole Obama teleprompter meme start? I must have missed something a long time ago.
I mean they all use teleprompters. They all use speech writers. If I were the prez, I wouldn't, but State of the Unions would end up peppered with F bombs and things like "Dudes, seriously, I'm not taking your stupid guns. I've already got a couple billion of my own." With occasional slips into melodramatic Elizabethan English.
Anyway, can someone fill me in on what got this ball rolling?
As for Obama and the constitution, presidents and constitutions are like dogs and cats. Adams, Jackson, Nixon, Bush and Obama all took chunks out of it.
Obama is lost without his teleprompter - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
How eloquent he is when he's reading his speeches. Long pauses, uh's, ands, stutters, bumbling fill-in sounds while searching for words when he is off the prompter. Really, he even needs it when talking in a classroom of elementary kids.
Big deal with the teleprompter - mbmt
[ In Reply To ..]
It appears from researching this whole teleprompter thing, it got started around 2009 by people who will do and say anything to discredit him because they cannot handle him being POTUS. They think that by using a teleprompter it shows that President Obama is an unintelligent schmuck and shows that he does not understand the topics at hand. These people equate memorization with intelligence, when memorization clearly has nothing to do with understanding and intelligence. He uses a teleprompter for the same reason other speakers use one, and that is to make sure major points are not forgotten when giving a long speech. I would use one too. All I can say to these people is wake up folks, Barack Obama is president for four more years. Nothing you say or do is going to change that.
Yeah, I was just wondering - Fanatical Hypocrite
[ In Reply To ..]
if there was some incident I missed. Like his teleprompter malfunctioned and he just stood there stuttering or ran off (me at any public speaking event).
I prefer my politicians use a teleprompter and have speech writers as long as it's basically a more eloquent version of what they wanted to say.
But all presidents have these sorts of nonsensical critical memes.
I wouldn't bank on that - A Proud and Patriotic Republican

Yeah, I know there are tons of articles out there trying to discredit President Obama. The Canadian Free Press, really? What does this have to do with him using a teleprompter?
The point is - don't be too sure or get too comfortable - duh!

"Obama’s refusal to hold press conferences and answer difficult questions as expected of a US President. Never in the modern age has there been a President so unwilling to answer to the American people for his actions. Considering the public’s growing anger towards his progressive policies, it is doubtful Obama will ever hold another press conference again."
I'll address the Constitution part. The president...sm - VTMT

taught Constitutional Law at the University of Chicago Law School so I think he is much more knowledgable about the US Constitution that most people.
But do you actually know? Could you sit and write - 3 lines about whatever provision

was being discussed. BTW, what provision is being discussed that prompted this silly thread?
Really, if you cannot do even that little, how would you know if a man who spent years studying the Constitution respects it or not?

that would also be in the realm of a lawyers education, and they also know "loopholes" and how to get by with things that are not necessarily "legal" constitutionally speaking, of course. He is pushing the bar just a bit too much, in my opinion.
Maybe so. Maybe not. After all, (sm) - just me again
[ In Reply To ..]
we don't know whether he even passed the course, do we? LOL But even if he is knowledgeable about it, that would just mean, as arrogant as he is, that he might know how to twist it to make it work to his advantage. Hopefully he won't get away with this too many more times.
He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School...sm - VTMT

The minimum GPA requirement is 3.746 out of 4.0. So I think it is safe to say he more than just passed all his courses.
That makes him smart - but not wise.

And without his transcripts, all you can do, in your words, is "safe to say."
did he pass the bar? was he ever truly a - constitutional lawyer??

Anybody can write anything about a person's background and education, but "living it" is another thing. He may be "Chicago Street Smart", but Chi-Town is also known for its "thugs" and "mafia connections," and having an education in some form or another does not make one absolutely qualified to "lead the USA". His background only suggests that he is out for himself and only himself, as most Chicago-ites are, and I know a lot of them personally. His mentality does not add up to a well-educated person who lives what he was taught. He has learned how to cheat and lie to get what HE wants and to heck with everybody else. A true "leader" he is not. He just wears the label of president, which he also obtained by the Chicago way of cheating, lieing, and bribery. Street stuff and thug stuff!
Tell us how you really feel about Chicago. - Will you listen to yourself?

but Harvard would never be a part of the "those in power" scenario you espouse, even if they had a functioning crystal ball that said, "Do what you can to push this guy through because he shall be President!"
Your theory would be more credible if you could cite a history of Ivy League schools doing "a lot of things." I think the chances of them not doing "a lot of things" for fear of a tarnished reputation would be much higher.
The proof is in the pudding but since you refuse to see it - vf

Let's try to make sense of your suggestion. OK, so some mysterious folks in power went to Kenya some 40-odd years ago and selected a little boy who they wanted to make president of the Yoo Nited States. Then they snatched him from a little village in his African home land and brought him to Hawaii to begin laying the groundwork for his ascent to the highest office in the nation. (Hmmm, now there’s a bit of irony considering the true history of this country.) Anyway, so they then forced an Hawaii news paper to print a fake birth announcement and later forced all his teachers to go along with their plan, who in turn gave him the grades he needed to get into Harvard. (Ooh lawd, I'm getting dizzy trying to follow along but let's keep going for the sake of understanding). Then they implemented Affirmative Action back in 1961 so that 26 years later Harvard would have to accept him as a student and the Harvard Law Review would have to make him president of the school paper. Then after all this help from these mysterious people in power, Obama decided to become a community organizer. (Oooh, this is getting good…let me guess, was this just to throw us off track so we would not become suspicious of their scheme?). Then after ensuring his win in the Senate, these mystical and powerful "theys" somehow ensured his presidential win TWICE so that he could..... could… Hey, wait just a doggone minute! What's missing here is the WHY?. So tell me, please. Why in the world would these powerful people do all this? What, exactly, was their purpose? And if they had a purpose, why did they choose someone with an African father? Why would they want to throw that possible hitch in their plan? Was that just to piss 47% of y’all off? Why Obama and not Jesse Jackson or Rev. Al Sharpton? Better yet, why not just explain to the rest of us why anyone with that much power wouldn’t just become president himself.
^^Voice of reason - and funny.

He was a mediocre student from a lesser known college who got where he is today - through Affirmative Action.
[ In Reply To ..]
I certainly don't give a lot of merit to much of anything he says. He admits in his own book he was a mediocre student who smoked a lot of pot. Yeah, sounds like the authority on the constitution to me. His entire Harvard career was Affirmative Action at its finest.
"Obama to the Harvard Law Record:
I must say, however, that as someone who has undoubtedly benefited from affirmative action programs during my academic career, and as someone who may have benefited from the Law Review’s affirmative action policy when I was selected to join the Review last year, I have not felt stigmatized within the broader law school community or as a staff member of the Review."

That's called being modest. - vf
[ In Reply To ..]
He still had to do the work that got him where he is today. Affirmative Action didn't study for him or choose his life path for him, it simply gave him the opportunity to compete. The real shame is that some of us had to rely on the government to step in and force institutions to treat us equally.
Search for the interview with Natalie Portman where she said - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Its not hard to get good grades at Harvard. Something along be lines of they figure if you're smart enough to get in they might as well give you an A and you don't have to work very hard for it. You have to do something majorly wrong to not get good grades there. This was a long time ago when she was attending. I think when she was doing an interview for the Star Wars movies she was filming.
So, Obama's supposed achievement doesn't impress me.
Obama's achievement doesn't impress you because of something - Portman said?
[ In Reply To ..]
That's kind of a low threshold for veracity.
I know a couple students and professors who graduated from Harvard and they had a different story, but that's my story and you have yours and Natalie's.
She is an Obama supporter, so I appreciate her for that, but an interview decades ago doesn't seem like a justification to disavow Obama's continuing achievements.
But that's your conclusion and I respect it. The dots just don't connect rationally to me.
I think he knows exactly what it says - kr

but doesn't care. He's doing everything he can to circumvent the constitution to his liking.
Regarding the president and the teleprompter - vf
[ In Reply To ..]
Well, one thing is for sure: President Obama definitely knows more about the Constitution than anyone on this board. It seems no matter how long I stay away from here, I still come back to the same old petty nonsense about the President. Those of us lacking the skills or the credentials to do anything but peck some keys or edit mumbojumbo for a living have no room to criticize anyone who was intelligent enough to finish law school with honors and then beat all odds and make it to the white house... not as janitor, cook, or typist, but as President of the United States. Geezuscrimonies haters, get off it already!
