Home temps and what do you wear around the house this time of year?

Posted: Jan 21, 2016

The thread about winter storm prep made me wonder what temperatures people keep their homes?
What temp is your thermostat set (when you are home) during the winter?
Here in NE Florida, it's chilly enough this time of year to wear sweats/turtlenecks/wool sox! I know they aren't very attractive, but I'm coldddddddddddddd!!! Going to make some hot tea.

In winter, we keep it kinda chilly just to avoid paying a high heat bill. It's set at about 63 in winter. We get cold too, but there's lots of blankets and pets. In summer, we rarely run the AC, so it can get really hot. A few years ago, inside got to 106! AC broke earlier that summer & we didn't have money to fix it, so it was HOT. Kept fans running and drank more fluids. Last summer, we ran the AC due to husband's health being bad, in and out of hospital, but kept it at about 80, just to take edge off the severe heat.

I keep the inside temperature at about 68. Inside the house, I wear a thermal underwear long-sleeved top and some jersey knit pants. I get them from a catalog called Woman Within. I like their products because they are warm and durable--also not expensive. I wear over the calf wool stockings. For outside, I have a parka that is lined with Primaloft and some quilted boots. I also wear a balaclava sometimes because we have high winds with ice that can blow right into your face. I joke that some people have this image of "hell" as being fire and steam, etc. like we learned in Sunday school when we were little kids. For me, hell would be living in a horrible winter climate all year long. Thankfully, we do have four seasons. Our temperatures are frequently near zero--and I dream of moving to Florida! :)

We used to live way north and had winter 9 months of the year. Summer would last maybe a month. Had to walk to stores when it was too cold for the car regardless of the tricks used to keep it from freezing. Would wear about 4 layers of regular clothes and arctic coveralls over that plus face and head gear to keep the wind off. Temp would be -30 at least a few times every winter, then add wind chill. Couldn't handle it very long, had to go anywhere south. I do miss it sometimes, beautiful place. You have snow and ice that shows up in ways nobody else sees. Stunning when the sun shines on it all just right. By the way, Florida is nice. Too much humidity for me, so we kept looking.

We live in central NY where winter temperatures vary between 0 and 30 degrees. We keep the heat down to 66 at night and in the day I fluctuate between 68 and 71. I wear a fleece jacket all day and a thermal top underneath. Even though we want to save money on the heating bill, that's as low as we can tolerate it. I bought a down coat this year because as I get older I am less tolerant of the cold. Sometimes I get too hot in it though if I wear it shopping because the stores have the heat on. In summer I try to keep the AC at around 76 or 78, but my husband will sometimes turn it down if he gets really uncomfortable.

I live in Tucson, so we don't have it as bad as some, but still cold. We keep our thermostat at 60-63 and just bundle up since it is just my husband and I. He is from back east and loves the cold so it doesn't bother him. I am a sissy and cannot type with my hands are cold so I have a little space heater and ALWAYS wear finger-less gloves when I am working. Easy to make so I always have some around.

Working At Home With A 3-year-oldApr 19, 2013
I can no longer afford daycare for my 3-year-old daughter.  I am literally working around-the-clock, usually waiting for work, just to pay bills.  I am a single parent and have no one here to help watch her, so I need some ideas on what I can do to keep her busy while I work.  I am feeling so guilty not playing with her all day or even just sitting down watching Dora with her!  I feel like a bad mom.  So far today she has watched some TV, colored, played with her toys, b ...

If you are burned out on transcription and want to not sure what to do, this is the time of year when all of the insurance companies start hiring temps to do their annual HEDIS projects.  The projects last 5-6 months and pay well.  Call your local temp agencies and ask about them.  I went from transcriptionist to working on one HEDIS project in 2014, did odd jobs til the 2015 project started, was on unemployment for a few months for the first time in my life and then got hired on ...

2-year-old Kentucky Girl Accidentally Killed By Her 5-year-old Brother May 01, 2013
"A 2-year-old Kentucky girl was accidentally killed by her 5-year-old brother who fired a rifle he had been given as a gift, officials said Wednesday." Parents can be arrested for not reporting a missing child. It's not even legal to let your child drive a car without a permit. Yet, this sad, sad story is unfortunately way too common. We MUST start holding adults accountable for guns in the home. ...

House Leaders Plan Separate House VoteMar 20, 2010
Democrats edged closer to finding 216 lawmakers to back a landmark health-care bill Saturday, as party leaders and White House officials were working on an executive order that they hope will win over a substantial number of antiabortion Democrats. The House Rules Committee continued its session on the third floor of the Capitol, where the panel is tasked with setting the terms of Sunday's floor debate. House leaders have decided to take a separate vote on the Senate version of the healt ...

What Should I Wear?Jul 12, 2012
Okay, I have to attend an evening (5:30 p.m.) wedding over Labor Day weekend that's being held outdoors in some sort of garden venue.  What the heck do I wear?  I'm so sick of wearing black to everything, but everything I'm seeing online is either too casual for evening or too formal for the venue, or only comes in the color white (not an option, obviously...).  If it helps any, I'm a size 14, very proportionate with chest and hips about the same size, but I do ...

What To Wear Under A ShirtJun 11, 2010
I found the most beautiful shirt!  It's sleeveless, has thin elastic at the waist and drapes snuggly over the lower waist and hips.  It is a thin poly cotton blend, so it needs something underneath, but strapless bra looks bulky, and I'm, well not "heavy" chested, but well-endowed, so need support.  I just want a smooth, well supported look without the headlights showing! Any suggestions?  ...

Anyone Have An Idea How To Wear Glasses With A Nose Injury?Oct 20, 2010
Yesterday, my husband was grinding the rust off a metal lawn mower deck. The grinder caught on a piece of metal and in a flash, bouced up, hit his safety goggles and knocked them and his glasses to the top of his head and took a little chunk from the side of his nose (thankfully did not hit his eye) right where the nose piece sits about 1 inch, plus gave him 'road rash' on the tip. He's having trouble wearing his glasses. We have tried everything we can think of to make ...

EEOC Tells Employers To Investigate Employees Who Wear Aug 05, 2016
You know that government can’t restrict your speech. Officially. But they can in all kinds of practical ways, just as they can do lots of other things to you without ever really taking an official action against you. Take the famous “Don’t Tread On Me” cap. Congress will never pass a law that says you can’t wear that cap, just because politicians may not like what the cap stands for. Constitutionally, Congress cannot do so. But if you think that means the government can’t come do ...

Any mothers out there who vote for Hillary will be voting for more of the same for their children, and you simply cannot do that. ...

Unless the 56-year-old Millinocket, Maine, man is sleeping or bathing, his beloved horns are rarely far from his scalp. It’s been that way since he first laid eyes on the horns at a Pagan men’s group gathering in 2009. A friend whose goat had recently died offered the horns to gr ...
