What should I wear?

Posted: Jul 12, 2012

Okay, I have to attend an evening (5:30 p.m.) wedding over Labor Day weekend that's being held outdoors in some sort of garden venue.  What the heck do I wear?  I'm so sick of wearing black to everything, but everything I'm seeing online is either too casual for evening or too formal for the venue, or only comes in the color white (not an option, obviously...).  If it helps any, I'm a size 14, very proportionate with chest and hips about the same size, but I do hate my arms so would rather not go sleeveless.  I'm guessing it will be warm during the early evening and then will start to cool down a bit later.

I would wear this... - sm

A floral sundress, brightly colored, with a crocheted shell that you can wear to cover your arms, and a pair of comfortable sandles.

Excellent choice! - Trampled underfoot

I think that sounds perfect!

I would wear mosquito-repellant! ;D - nm - Meerkat

Sundress - My Opinion

I agree with the sundress, but since it's evening, maybe a tone-down on the bright colors would be good. I also agree with a sweater-type, something pretty, lightweight to formalize things a bit. Maybe something crochet/light knit/a teeny bit sparkly...short-sleeved, but long enough to cover or partially cover what you feel your arms need covering.

I look ridiculous in them - OP

The little sweaters that look so cute on everyone look absolutely ridiculous on me. I have a 38DD chest and those sweaters are not cut appropriately. They are usually cut so short that they actually just cling to my breasts and make my chest look bigger. The sweaters don't fall properly and then the rest of me looks bigger because the sweater then sticks out and flies outward instead of laying flat against my waist, which is still reasonably well-defined, so then the option becomes to wear a full length sweater or cardigan of some sort, but that just makes me feel old maid I guess because I'm not really into that look. Also, I guess when I think of a sundress, I think cotton and that may be a little too casual for where this is being held. If anyone has any suggestions for stores or shops online that they like, I would gladly appreciate those. Here's what I've tried (with little success):

Macys
White House Black Market
Soma
Talbots
Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor Loft
Nordstrom
JC Penney
Eshakti.com
Overstock.com
Target

Sorry, I know it's not the worst problem in the world to have big boobs and be plus-size, but I've put on weight in the last couple of years and just really unhappy with how I see myself. I'm a jeans and tee kind of girl, so dresses and dressing up are tough for me anyway and people have made comments about the size of my chest when I dress up, along the lines of like I'm *trying* to show it off, which I'm not, but it just adds to the problem. Rant over. Thanks for any suggestions.

Plus-sized too. I shop at Avenue (sm) - Belinda

Hi! I have found that Avenue has some really nice and cute things and reasonably priced. www.avenue.com. I haven't ordered from the website because I'm lucky enough to have a store near me. They have everything, from business wear to casual and dressy. I see attractive things there that I don't see in the Plus Size departments of the big department stores. Last summer I picked up some beautiful chiffon-type blouses, really
feminine and frilly. For the wedding, how about something like that, along with some dressy pants?

If you do check out Avenue, be sure and get on their e-mail list.

Good luck!

Try it!

Summer shawl - perhaps?

Either a light-weight crocheted shawl or a wide scarf that you can drape over your shoulders and hold closed in the front with a nice pin.

What about a pretty, knee-length skirt (attractive on - all women), and a silky, flowy -sm

maybe silk or silk-like blouse to dress it up? Something frilly & feminine. Depending on your waist, sometimes a flowing blouse that goes over the waistline of the skirt, with a cinch-type belt, can define the waist more, and have a slimming effect. Especially if the blouse is worn sort of loose, and a bit over the top of the belt. (Hard to describe, but you probably get the idea).

Regardless of your size, if you pick pretty, summery, feminine fabrics, people are likely to notice that, and not even notice your figure, or lack thereof. I have a pretty skirt I got at the Goodwill... knee-length, flowery and DARLING! I've been wearing it on summer job-interviews and to parties, and I get nothing but compliments on it. I could be wearing nothing at all on top, and all people seem to see is that pretty skirt!

I've been really impressed the the pretty plus-sized clothing I've seen lately, too! Some are just SO cute, and I often don't find anything as nice in the "regular" clothing section.

So, keep on searching. Also, one thing that works well for me is to go into lots of stores in less of a "must find" mode. Even stores I wouldn't normally shop in. Often I'll go into someplace like Sears, or (?) in order to buy a toaster or something, wander into the clothing section, and find absolutely THE perfect dress, skirt or top!

You can wear slacks too with a nice pretty blouse - That's what i wore to an ouside garden weddin

You don't always have to wear a dress or skirt, especially if you are not comfortable. I attended an evening wedding in a garden and I wore a pair of navy blue slacks with a really pretty floral blouse. And it's something you can wear anytime else you want to.

What To Wear Under A ShirtJun 11, 2010
I found the most beautiful shirt!  It's sleeveless, has thin elastic at the waist and drapes snuggly over the lower waist and hips.  It is a thin poly cotton blend, so it needs something underneath, but strapless bra looks bulky, and I'm, well not "heavy" chested, but well-endowed, so need support.  I just want a smooth, well supported look without the headlights showing! Any suggestions?  ...

Anyone Have An Idea How To Wear Glasses With A Nose Injury?Oct 20, 2010
Yesterday, my husband was grinding the rust off a metal lawn mower deck. The grinder caught on a piece of metal and in a flash, bouced up, hit his safety goggles and knocked them and his glasses to the top of his head and took a little chunk from the side of his nose (thankfully did not hit his eye) right where the nose piece sits about 1 inch, plus gave him 'road rash' on the tip. He's having trouble wearing his glasses. We have tried everything we can think of to make ...

EEOC Tells Employers To Investigate Employees Who Wear Aug 05, 2016
You know that government can’t restrict your speech. Officially. But they can in all kinds of practical ways, just as they can do lots of other things to you without ever really taking an official action against you. Take the famous “Don’t Tread On Me” cap. Congress will never pass a law that says you can’t wear that cap, just because politicians may not like what the cap stands for. Constitutionally, Congress cannot do so. But if you think that means the government can’t come do ...

2000 Seattle Teachers Wear BLM T-shirts To School.Oct 21, 2016
...last month a student was suspended for wearing an "all lives matter" shirt to school. We've simply got to get a grip on our educational system and turn it around, because it's become an indoctrination system, not an educational system (check our kids' statistics). There isn't much time left, and this is the election to get started. Any mothers out there who vote for Hillary will be voting for more of the same for their children, and you simply cannot do that. ...

Pagan Priest Wins Right To Wear Goat Horns In License Photo,Dec 17, 2016
It doesn’t matter how many articles of clothing Phelan Moonsong puts on before walking out the door each day: If he’s not wearing his favorite pair of goat horns, the Pagan priest might as well be naked. Unless the 56-year-old Millinocket, Maine, man is sleeping or bathing, his beloved horns are rarely far from his scalp. It’s been that way since he first laid eyes on the horns at a Pagan men’s group gathering in 2009. A friend whose goat had recently died offered the horns to gr ...

Judge Rules Texas School Can Force Student To Wear RIFD Locator ChipJan 11, 2013
A public school district in Texas can require students to wear locator chips when they are on school property, a federal judge ruled on Tuesday in a case raising technology-driven privacy concerns among liberal and conservative groups alike.   US District Judge Orlando Garcia said the San Antonio Northside School District had the right to expel sophomore Andrea Hernandez, 15, from a magnet school at Jay High School, because she refused to wear the device, which is requi ...
