Salt Lake City Tribune: Obamaâs foreign policy record is perhaps his strongest suit, especia

Posted: Oct 22, 2012

Excerpt from the SLC Tribune's endorsement of President Obama for reelection:

"Obama’s foreign policy record is perhaps his strongest suit, especially compared to Romney’s bellicose posture toward Russia and China and his inflammatory rhetoric regarding Iran’s nuclear weapons program. Obama’s measured reliance on tough economic embargoes to bring Iran to heel, and his equally measured disengagement from the war in Afghanistan, are examples of a nuanced approach to international affairs. The glaring exception, still unfolding, was the administration’s failure to protect the lives of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans, and to quickly come clean about it.

In considering which candidate to endorse, The Salt Lake Tribune editorial board had hoped that Romney would exhibit the same talents for organization, pragmatic problem solving and inspired leadership that he displayed here more than a decade ago. Instead, we have watched him morph into a friend of the far right, then tack toward the center with breathtaking aplomb. Through a pair of presidential debates, Romney’s domestic agenda remains bereft of detail and worthy of mistrust.

Therefore, our endorsement must go to the incumbent, a competent leader who, against tough odds, has guided the country through catastrophe and set a course that, while rocky, is pointing toward a brighter day. The president has earned a second term. Romney, in whatever guise, does not deserve a first."

Didn't see that coming.

Way to go, SLC Tribune!

As a result the candidate has no credibility, not that cred has ever been the GOP's strong suit, or Romney's for that matter.

Romney's in a class by himself. We've never had someone change positions - in front of cameras with each group. VERY strange,

bizarrely cynical and dismissive of those parts of his audiences who would realize what he was doing, and no doubt a big reason why this extremely friendly-disposed newspaper felt it not only couldn't endorse this Mormon very-big-wig but had to repudiate him.
I never heard him do that. Give me an example. - Huh? (sm)

You mean positions specifically? You're not talking about like how Obama changes dialects depending which group he is trying to convince that day? I've never heard Romney change his mind, except for his view on abortion.
Easy to research. He has changed his stance on many issues, sometimes... - VTMT

to such as extent you feel the need to accuse the SLCT editorial staff of drugging? Romney's clueless saber-rattling with Iran? His condescension toward Russia and China? The measured disengagement options, which are the only alternatives to doing nothing versus a deadly, costly all-out military engagement? Mitt's inability to organize a trustworthy campaign?

Utah is one of the most republican states in the union. Mormons comprise 58% of the population and Mitt Romney is, by their own admission, Utah's adopted favorite son, due to his former Olympics successes. IN SPITE OF THIS, the SLCT board simply could not bring themselves to get behind him. That's reality. No need to take a drug-laced vision quest to figure that out.

If foreign policy is - Obama's strongest suit,

he's in big trouble tonight.

He may slither his way out of it with his lofty - rhetoric that his people love.

into another conflict. Enough of our young men have died in conflicts that we never should have been involved in. One of the reasons I am voting for Obama is his views on foreign diplomacy vs blustering threats and calls for military action. I am for reinstituting the draft with few exemptions if troops overseas are ever again called for.

The media has coddled him and always given him softball questions. Any time anyone challenges him, he gets a pissy face like a big baby.

You are delusional if you think other countries fear him. Once our troops are out of Afghanistan. The terrorists will be back her in the US as our borders are extremely pourus. You will say, "Obama has done such and such". If it is secure, then I guess just a tiny number of illegals are crossing the border? Take off the rose colored glass, rub your eyes and wake up.

Other countries (like Russia, Venezuela, Cuba, etc) don't fear him because they like his socialist policies. The Islamic extremists DO NOT fear him. They fear no one. They want to die for the cause.

A Reminder On Foreign Policy And Obama.Oct 23, 2012
Remember 2008? One of Obama's weak points was foreign policy....he had NO experience in foreign policy. A lot of people don't want to vote for Romney because he doesn't have any foreign policy experience. To those people, I would love to know why they would vote for a candidate that had no foreign policy experience one year and four years later refuse to vote for someone because they don't have any foreign policy experience? Obama Has Not Right To Tell Scott Walker To Bone Up On Foreign PolicyApr 08, 2015
He hasn't done a good job at foreign policy himself. In response to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s criticism of his Iran policy, President Obama suggested that the presumed candidate for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination “bone up on foreign policy.”   In other words, anyone who disagrees with the president on Iran’s nuclear program, or any other national security issue, is just not knowledgeable enough to understand. Of course, there is a very ...
