"Red State, Blue City: How the Urban-Rural Divide

"The difference is no longer about where people live, it's about how people live: in spread-out, open, low-density privacy -- or amid rough-and-tumble, in-your-face population density and diverse communities that enforce a lower-common denominator of tolerance among inhabitants. The voting data suggest that people don't make cities liberal -- cities make people liberal."
Those maps dividing the country into red and blue states haven't made sense in a long time. Here, Here, courtesy of Princeton's Robert Vanderbai, is an electoral map that shows the real divisions:

Interestingly, the red areas often start right outside blue urban areas, reflecting perhaps not just rural areas with lessened opportunities for learning greater tolerance of and respect for other ways, but also likely a physical sorting out to rural suburbs of people who reject the diversity of urban areas.

Yet, you go just a few miles inland, to California's Central Valley, and you might as well be in rural Iowa! Going from San Francisco to - say - Modesto, is almost like being in a foreign country... it's so different.
