"Free to a good Home" -- Why this should NEVER be done

Posted: Oct 23, 2009

I wandered down a strange e-street the other night and was horrified & sickened by some of the stuff I found on dog fighting.  Actually I had started out by going to the websites of some of the top animal welfare organizations, & one particular website (mentioned in the video below) had a lot of info on dog fighting, so things switched in one click from warm fuzzies to deadly.

I took a look at craigslist's "Pets" forum in my area and was staggered by the number of "Free to a good home" ads there were.  The ones that asked a rehoming fee asked $10 or so -- considering the amount of money these dogfighting rings are making off of this blood sport, 10 bucks is nothing.  Less than nothing.  They charge 100 bucks a pop for admission to see dogs fight to the death.  A "bait dog" (these are usually the ones that are stolen or adopted "for free") is thrown into the ring to get things going.  It's heinous, grizzly, horrific, barbaric, sickening to think about any animal having to go through this and about the people who exploit the loyalty of pitbulls & train them to this kind of  behavior.  Apparently the dogs are given steroids & amphetamines to make the fight more...entertaining.

Apparently there's a lot of dog theft going on, as in the following article (no gruesome pictures):  http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/02/0218_040218_dogfighting.html

And some more info (also no bad pix here):

http://www.hsus.org/acf/fighting/dogfight/what_you_can_do.html

If you google "stop dog fighting" you will see that there are lots of organizations trying to stop this.  Apparently there was a huge bust in Missouri this summer and something like 400 dogs were confiscated.  But I am sure this is only the tip of the iceberg.  It's a very clandestine operation, as the practice is a felony in all 50 states.  But it's a huge problem & younger & younger kids are being exposed & desensitized to this kind of thing.

Now the following showed the aftermath:  a dog who was used as "bait."  It doesn't show it happenening, but it shows some of his terrible wounds -- & this is a dog who managed to get out alive.  Don't watch it if you don't want to weep, but do watch it if you want to get VERY angry.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RA11C8

I found a website run by a fighting dog owner that was supposed to teach people how to make money at this, & one of the ways he tried to justify it was by saying that it's what dogs want to do, it's their instinct, it's cruel not to let them do it, they don't have any feelings. People will shut off every good thing in themselves (if there ever was any good thing to begin with) in order to make a buck.

I am sorry if this upsets anyone, I really am.  I've been just dazed for the last 24 hours.  I had no idea.  But after I got done crying (I did plenty of that) and giving my 2 rescue pups enormous hugs (plenty of that, too) I became absolutely livid thinking about this & wanting to know what I can do to help stop it.

The second link above has a number of resources if you want to do something.  As with everything, if each person does even a small amount, things can really change.

pet adoption/give away is just so flawed either way - a little off topic

free or not. Here they charge about $325 for dogs at our shelter in town which is crazy when you could get a pure bred dog for about that or less (that is if you look at it from a money POV and not a saving animal POV). Plus they make you jump through lots of hoops for you to adopt them. Which I understand because they don't want the animals back on the street. I am sure it also helps to detour all the ones wanting the dogs for other reasons then just a loving animal. They are now a kill shelter and that started a few months ago because they simply just have too many animals! I think they should lower the cost of the animals and just really check people out better, maybe home checks after a few months or something.... I don't know it is all sad. More and more dogs get lose and have puppies that arent wanted and then they just get tossed aside, or maybe that puppy turned into a dog that no one wanted.... all sad!!! All the dogs we have ever had have been stray puppies!

***That's the whole point. If you believe in saving animals then you will always choose to adopt rather than to encourage breeding of more dogs. The shelters have so many expenses. Food, care, medicine, veterinary care. They have volunteers but they have to have some paid staff. They only get so much from donations & have to fund the effort somehow. It seems like a lot of money but it's just a matter of making a conscious choice of where & how to spend your money; what things you want your money to support. I would spend MORE on a shelter animal than a purebred because I just don't believe in the concept of purebreds, I consider it a form of some kind of cross between aristocracy and fashion, but that's just me. But there are too many dogs, so on a purely dog-overpopulation basis I don't believe in adding to the dog population when there are already so many good dogs that need homes, including purebreds. If I were really into having a particular breed, I would rather get one from a shelter than pay a breeder. I would consider my money better spent. I would end up with a dog I want and fund an organization I support at the same time rather than some individual's new car.

Plus they make you jump through lots of hoops for you to adopt them. Which I understand because they don't want the animals back on the street. I am sure it also helps to detour all the ones wanting the dogs for other reasons then just a loving animal.

Couldn't help but notice the parallels between - pets and children

Irresponsible people can breed as many as they want, often they get abused and abandoned, once they get into the system it becomes ridiculously hard and expensive to adopt them, and the people that do adopt them feel self-righteous because they didn't deliberately bring another into the world themselves.

only to find none at all on the shelves.  "WTF?" I'm thinking.  Maybe I had somehow ended up in the Twilight Zone. At the 6th store I went to, I asked what the deal was with Excedrin.  Where was it? Nobody knew or could give me an answer.  So I come home and type "Excedrin" into Google, and was shocked to learn that it's been recalled! (Along with 2 other, can't-do-without staples, No-Doz and Gas-X). Apparently it was recalled a month ago (something about t ...

Home Of The BoehnerFeb 06, 2012
News in from Ohio, the home state of the Boehner.  Apparently the republ guvinator, the self-same fella whose first act in office was ramming through a union busting law (which was later overwhelmingly swatted down by the voters) decided he was going to give his State O' The State address in a small town (302 miles round trip) instead of the state capitol.  He claims it will add no cost.  Guess he doesnt consider satellite equipment and the cost and time of all the LEGISLATOR ...

GUESS WHO CAME HOME!!Apr 09, 2011
Just wanted to let all of you know we brought my little Tiny home.  We picked her up about 11:00 a.m.  Saturday.   I can honestly say when she was brought into the room where we were waiting it was one of the most touching things I have ever seen. The young assistant told us he would get her, and he asked us to have a seat.  When the door opened a few minutes later he was holding her in his arms.  It was not hard to see she has been through quite a bit.  She l ...

I have inside cats of my own. This little boy has been coming around for some months and I have fed him, no problem there. The medication ordered was Terramycin. Am trying to find out if anyone has had a cat with eye issue that could use something other than twice a day eye ointment, something that migh ...

Re. Nursing Home Patient(s)Oct 15, 2009
Several family members while in nursing homes have been approached by religious "Zealouts" trying to push the "right faith" by staff or so-called "visitors" on them. I am so sick of it! My Dad was presented with a Bible of different faith at 81 and dying. Now another member at 85 in failure was presented with 3 different "faiths" by the "staff" and I am enraged. Being asked questions by 85-YO as to what is "B'hai" and what is "Spiritualism." I am so sick of it. Keep your Bible(s) off their ...

It was a difficult decision, but I decided to avoid worrying about whether or not she could or would escape any fence I would build and then there's the worrying she may bite someone else and have to be put down.  Anyway, within four hours of my ad appearing in the local paper, I had met a nice couple who live on 20 acres and have another boxer and they were looking for a playmate.  I took my baby to their house so I could check it out and everything looked great.
