Re. nursing home patient(s)

Posted: Oct 15, 2009

Several family members while in nursing homes have been approached by religious "Zealouts" trying to push the "right faith" by staff or so-called "visitors" on them. I am so sick of it! My Dad was presented with a Bible of different faith at 81 and dying. Now another member at 85 in failure was presented with 3 different "faiths" by the "staff" and I am enraged. Being asked questions by 85-YO as to what is "B'hai" and what is "Spiritualism." I am so sick of it. Keep your Bible(s) off their brains!! Don't send this to that "other board" - I can't stand them there either! Don't flame me either as I am angry when tired and sick of it all. Enough is enough! Living my best life day to day.

Caregivers should not discuss religeon any more than doctors should - that should be reported - nm - Put ATHIEST on his door! ;-)

Who is disturbed by this? Is it mainly you? - Old part-timer

A lot of older people who were indifferent to religion find themselves questioning as the end comes near. Or perhaps they see the comfort that faith brings to some of their peers at the nursing home. Do you really want to deny that comfort to them? Even if you're happily atheistic, who is to say when you are 85 and looking death in the face, you won't want to re-evaluate your stance. Do you want your children to make the decision for you and put ATHEIST on your door?

I think your best response is to tell them you don't know the answers and ask if they would like to speak to a priest or minister.

Is to approach the elderly person and ask them what THEIR belief system is and if they would like to share their thoughts.

Shoving religion at anyone is wrong. Let the individual make that decision.

Not exactly what I was referring to - Old part-timer

I was referring to the original poster's story of being asked by an 85-year-old relative about B'hai and Spiritualism. I didn't sound like the relative was upset by any of this, but that they had questions. At that point, I would refer them to a clergyperson if they desired.

On the other hand, if my elderly relative WAS upset about someone at the home approaching them about spiritual matters, I would definitely have a talk with someone at the home to make sure it stopped.

Nursing HomeJun 19, 2012
I had posted a few weeks ago for activities and I thank you all for the great ideas. I was asked today if I would like to cook or bake something when I start my shift at 2:30 on Sat. Some of the ladies are very capable of helping, so any idea what I can throw together fast and easy that they can help with? Cupcakes and cakes are just so usual and just done last week. Need a new idea. Looking forward to starting work this Sat. Only part time right now but who knows? I will be able to d ...

Nursing Home ActivityJun 05, 2012
Going to work at the local nursing home (50 residents) in the evening to help with activities and keep them interested in things.  They have not had activity in a couple months as there was no one to do it, and they have made a new position, and I am it.  I need some suggestions as to what we can do for about 20 minutes of activity for them.  Most of them are in wheelchairs or not very ambulatory but are mentally pretty good, although in their 90s.  We do the usual of being ...

People In Nursing Homes Have The Most To Fear From Ryan's PlanApr 14, 2011
Those in nursing homes have the most to fear from Paul Ryan's plan, but their families will have to try to support them. That means they will give up (1) retirement funds including 401Ks, IRAs, (2) college funds , (3) homes (4) plans for the future. This is a cruel plan. The part that hurts the elderly effects me as I think of my parents and my grandmother, but it doesn't stop there. ...

We Are Not Allowed To Talk About Any PatientOct 15, 2014
I am just reading this morning about the nurse who has tested positive for Ebola in Texas after taking care of Eric Duncan. Nurse understood the risks of working so close to one of the world’s most feared viruses and tried to reassure her family that she would be safe. When nurse’s mother learned her daughter was caring for Thomas Eric Duncan, nurse told her: “Mom, no. Don’t worry about me,” family friend said. How would the mother have known had the daughter not told her? Is that ...

Controversy Over Dr.s Remarks About Patient's WeightNov 21, 2009

Communication And Ebola Patient In DallasOct 01, 2014
Today's Ebola news shocker (not!!) is that information obtained from a diligent and thorough nurse failed to make into clinical decision making, and the patient was sent home with antibiotics for undiscovered Ebola. Properly handled, the patient would have gone into isolation at that time, and been treated with appropriate supportive measures, and not spent 2 additional days exposing others to the virus. If many more Ebola cases occur as a result of this totally commonplace error on the p ...
