Dog question. I'm kind of worried about my little chihuahua (sm)

Posted: Feb 21, 2015

He had 4 shots yesterday, usually it's just 2 or 3.  Obviously, he's sore, he even yelped when he got one of them.  He is sore today, but just not acting right.  He won't jump up to my lap, walking very slowly, not eating.  I did call the vet but he hasn't called back yet.  From what I've been reading on the net, it seems like that might be common, and as long as he drinks water,  he will be all right.  He is drinking water today if I put it in front of him, so that makes me feel a little better.  He's not eating, but not too worried about that.  He keeps licking his mouth as if he is going to throw up, but hasn't.  I did get him to eat two TINY pieces of bacon and about 1/4 tsp of scrambled egg.  Oh, and I'm trying to pick him up so it doesn't hurt him, so he can be on our laps as usual, but seems I always hit the wrong spot.  He's my baby.  Any ideas?

It's probably vaccine overload and little dogs have this problem sm - dog person

a lot. When the vet calls, explain what's going on and I think by tomorrow he'll feel better. It's okay if he doesn't eat today and only drinks water. As long as he's peeing and drinking he should be fine.

In the future, be very adamant that your dog is very sensitive and only allow 1 type of vaccine to be given on any visit and tell them you'll come back for others. If it's a mixed vaccine that's fine, but only 1 in a day.

I'm a "cat mom" but my son had a Chihuahua. One thing is they really have no fat on them, so shots are a problem with the poor little things. Wait til your vet calls. In the meantime, I would just be understanding and loving with him and baby him; keep an eye on him.

with my cat, he got 3 shots, instead of the usual 1 or 2. The vet said he may not feel well for the rest of the day, etc. Four shots is a lot of medicine to put into a tiny Chihuahua at the same time. I'm sure that's what the vet will tell you when he calls. He'll probably pick up and feel better tomorrow.

Oh my dear, poor sweet baby. I don't have any ideas or advice but since I am a chihuahua owner and lover as well, I can empathize. I wonder if there is such a thing as doggy Tylenol? Keep us posted. You all are in my prayers.

I hope your dog is doing better now... - I have a "baby" too

A Pomeranian, who is the love of my life.

I did a lot of research about vaccinations for dogs. While I do believe they should get them, doing boosters yearly is OVERKILL. After the pup series, boosters should ONLY be given every 3 years. Some vets suggest and have no problem with yearly as it puts more money in their pockets. Not all vets are like that though.

I also agree with the other poster--for sensitive (esp. small) dogs, never give boosters at the same time, esp the rabies vac.

You probably already know all this :)

Thank you everybody for responding (sm) - OP

The vet did call and he suggested if I didn't have any Rimadyl left from a previous problem he had with his anal glands to give him half a baby aspirin for the soreness and in case he has a fever. I did this, but so far, he's the same. He said as long as he is drinking water and peeing okay, he should be fine. The only thing he said he had different from last year was the rabies shot (which is every 3 years here as long as it is not late). I did see 4 vials and I'm positive he said 4 shots, but today on the phone he said he got 3 shots and one vial was dewormer and it was oral. I swear I don't remember him giving him anything orally and I'm just hoping he didn't get a double vaccine of something. If you are so inclined, please for my little boy's good health. I'm not as worried as long as he is drinking water, but I hate for him to be sick. We have 4 dogs but he is my baby. Thanks to everyone.

wishing you the very best - Christine

We lost our Chihuahua mix in 2013 at age 12. I know how precious they are, and I remember when she would get her shots she didn't act quite right for a day or so. I remember she would yelp if I tried to pick her up. The injection sites really seemed to bother her. Soon she was up and around and feeling much better. Hoping the same for you. Please let us know.

I'm sorry you lost yours. I've never been attached to a dog this much. - Dread that day. - OP (sm)

We had 5 dogs in total, and I bonded totally with them all. The Chi mix, however, is even worse to try to get over. I have her soft throw I bought her for her last Christmas next to the chair where I watch TV. I have her picture and her favorite toys on top of the throw. The only thing you can do is cherish your little one and give him all the love you have. Make the most of every day you have, and that gives you comfort later. Best to you!

I hope your little boy perks up soon, but something come to mind that happened to my golden retriever. I know...considerably bigger than years, but keep reading.

I took my boy in for his 3-year rabies a couple years ago. In with that same shot was a vaccination for leptospirosis, which a disease usually carried by wild animals such as raccons, deer, etc. The rest of that day and for the next 2 days, he did not act like himself. He laid around a good bit, was not as excited about food and the injection site seemed to bother him. Now, he has pretreatment before he receives his lepto vaccine.

As long as he is drinking and going to the potty, I would not worry much. I bet tomorrow he will start to perk up. If he is sore, maybe an ice pack for a short time on his spot would help calm down the soreness, though I know its easy for little pups like that to get cold easily. Just an idea.

Keep us posted on how your boy is doing. Hope in a day or two he's back to his normal self.

Update On My Chihuahua (sm)Feb 22, 2015
He is now eating normally and drinking normally.  I am SO RELIEVED.  He's still having trouble jumping up on the couch and the bed, but he's trying without yelping.  I gave him a half baby aspirin yesterday and another half this morning, per vet's instructions and it seems to be helping.  I do appreciate the suggestions and good thoughts from all, and I've decided I will never get him so many immunizations at one time.  (That's how I feel about k ...

I only have 3 paychecks left until Christmas and I am kind of bummed.  I have 3 small kids so that is where the money gets tight.  My mother in law told me not to get her anything this year, as with every other year.  This one year I took her up on that and didn't get her anything and I felt like just a creep when we all opened our gifts.  She got loads of stuff and we didn't get her anything.  She told me that I need to get over that feeling, but I cant!!!&nbs ...

My father passed away this past week, he took his own life.  He was 75 years old and in bad physical shape and constant pain. He led a good life and was a very generous man with many friends. I am wondering about suicide in this case, what do you all think about what is going to happen to his Soul?  I really hav ...

A book due out this week by political journalists John Heilemann and Mark Halperin has all the right politicos sweating and backpedaling, from John McCain to the Senate majority leader, and even Bill and Hillary Clinton. But in "Game Change", it's Palin who really takes it on the nose. According to an advance copy thoroughly dog-ear'd by The New York Times, some Mc ...

"Gay Teen Worried He Might Be Christian"Jan 13, 2010
LOUISVILLE, KY—At first glance, high school senior Lucas Faber, 18, seems like any ordinary gay teen. A gnawing feeling that, deep down, he may be a fundamentalist, right-wing Christian. "I don't know what's happening to me," Faber admitted to reporters Monday. "It's like I get these weird ...

Your nose gets used to it, so you might be using more than you initially did and not even realize it. (Kind of like someone who smokes d ...
