Kind Note

Posted: Jan 13, 2013

Hi all- I'm not wanting to start a big fight here, so that's not my purpose.  I just want to address an issue that many people share. And would like thoughts on both sides.

It's perfume (not including scented body sprays) users who use too much.  This can easily happen to the wearer, particularly if you wear the same perfume every day. Your nose gets used to it, so you might be using more than you initially did and not even realize it. (Kind of like someone who smokes doesn't smell the smoke anymore.)

I love a nice perfume as much as anybody, but try to remember that if you are putting on more than just a small spritz or dab on a couple of pulse points (such as wrists and/or behind the ears), you're using too much. I actually prefer the dab type, because it's way too easy for a spritz to be too much. If I do use a spray, I just do a quick spritz on one wrist, then sort of dab/rub the other wrist on that spot.

Sorry, but nothing more unappetizing than going to a restaurant, wanting to eat a nice meal for what it is, but the person has dulled my senses with heavy perfume. Or standing in line somewhere and bombarded for the time I'm in line.

Keep in mind that MANY people are allergic to perfumes, too.

If ANYONE is saying to you that you are wearing too much perfume, you probably are.  Don't be offended!  It's easy to use too much without realizing it.  And a fine perfume will last you the day. Your nose will get used to it as the day goes on, but there's no reason to put more on that day.

Cologne has a little more leeway because it's not as concentrated.  Body sprays are designed to be sprayed on more than just the pulse points.

This goes for the men, too! If you think your man is using too much, let him know. He may have the same problem we do if we're used to the scent.

Maybe they are wearing too much to hide - the scent of you

I did not post the note to start a problem. I wanted to post the note, but I went in knowing that there is always someone immature enough to purosely start a problem and I decided in my head that I'm going to post because I think it's a worthy topic--and that I wasn't going to get into a fight because of an immature brat or two. And I'm not and I didn't.

Anyway, thanks for the reponses. I think it's something several of us can relate to, this perfume thing.

my experience - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I used to work in an office setting many moons ago and wore the fragrance Obsession. I'm drawn to musky scents so I can tolerate a certain amount, but one of the ladies I worked with told me in a nice way to try to tone it down.

I wasn't thinking and wore the same amount the very next day and I remember her getting so angry at me and she actually left early because she couldn't tolerate the scent. This taught me a life lesson, lol.

Anyways, certain scents can trigger migraines in some people (I make my own perfumes so am aware of this). Also, musky scents don't bother me, but floral, oh boy! That triggers a headache in me, but people seem to love floral scents?

It's an individual thing. But being aware of the fact that "less is more" can be a universal practice when using perfume.

I totally agree - I think a lot of it depends

[ In Reply To ..]
on the social situation (i.e. work versus a New Years Eve party), but all who wear fragrances should do so with extreme caution!

I Agree - see msg

...we need to not purposefully offend anyone if we know they are offended. When working with other people, this is just common courtesy.

I'm all for live and let live---but to knowingly be offensive to people is just wrong. It's downright arrogant.

I used to smoke. For the life of me, I could not smell the smoke on myself or in a room after I smoked a cigarette. An office co-worker (back when we could smoke in public buildings)told me that she's sorry, but she just cannot tolerate the smoke smell in the office. At that point, I took my cigarettes outside without an argument. In my mind, I was a bit ticked (I wanted to smoke, dammit), but I respect others wishes.

And knowing what I know about perfume, I don't try to purposefully offend anyone. I got on a kick where I was using a strong perfume, but must have been getting used to it, because someone did tell me to lay off a bit. I did lay off and used less and never heard another word about it from anyone. In retrospect, I was using more and more of it. I don't use it anymore, and I tell you, if someone has too much of this scent on, I can smell it. I can smell it even if they don't have too much on, but it's actually a nice smell.

there was a lady taking my b/p and I remarked to her how nice she smelled. She was surprised because she said she could not smell and it was body lotion she had used that morning. I got the point I could not wear perfume myself, seemed to weight me down but did work inhouse one time and I asked the supervisor to please have a talk with a lady who seemed to bathe in a particular scent of the day. It can be very offending to the nose and I am with you, people should tone it down some, especially if called to their attention.

Happened to me, too - See Msg

That is so funny you mention that. When I worked in an office, a man came up to me and asked me what my perfume was because he wanted to buy it for his wife. I wasn't wearing any perfume, cologne, body lotion, powder or anything.

As I thought about it, it was probably my hair conditioner that I had been using for years. I could smell it in the bottle, but never smelled it on myself after rinsing it out and all. I told the guy it was probably my hair conditioner and maybe he could buy that for his wife...lol.

Which conditioner was it? Does anyone remember - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
the shampoo Gee, Your Hair Smells Terffific? I actually have a nearly full bottle still left over from the 70s or 80s!

The company in the US stopped making it and was bought out by another company overseas, but the formula has changed. I found some at the Vermont Country Store and when I got it home, it clearly was NOT the same. Bummer....I love that stuff!

Many dentist/orthodontist offices in our area ask - me

[ In Reply To ..]
patients not to wear perfume/cologne. The assistants are in very close contact with the patients and it can be irritating. I am very sensitive to smells and can get nearly debilitating migraines seconds after smelling something offensive, but I don't always know what will cause this. Cigarette smoke/odor does and I avoid people I see smoking or those I know who smoke as much as possible. Anything with artificial blueberry flavoring/scent in it is an issue for me too, as well as Murphy's Oil cleaning products. It is not that I just find the smell unpleasant, it is that they make physically sick almost instantly. One year I bought my kids some blue candy canes at Christmas and they had artificial blueberry something in them. I was in bed for 3 days, unable to do much of anything due to a debilitating migraine.

perfume and allergies - migraine bound

[ In Reply To ..]
For someone with environmental type allergies, perfumes are killer! Almost every Sunday after church I come home with a migraine due to the mix of perfumes and colognes and the enclosed space. Same with dr. and dentist offices. At the store, you can go to another aisle, unless you are waiting in line. It's not that any of it smells bad, it all smells good! But it's just so strong sometimes :( I have unscented everything - laundry detergent, bath soap, lotion, and even the Bounce for the dryer. I haven't had issue with shampoo if it's a fruity smell. There are times I've had to ask people to not wear so much next time we go to dinner or whatever, and I've had to change seats several times in Sunday School and church, and leave aisles at the store, and a lot of times I take a migraine medication after church. If I've run out and insurance won't pay for it, I sometimes end up at the ER. I know allergies are a personal issue but it would be nice if people were more careful about not "bathing in it", lol. Funny topic, thanks for sharing, and I must say I am sooo thankful to be able to work at home!

I think a lot of fragrance users - just don't realize...

[ In Reply To ..]
fine perfumes are meant to be applied very sparingly (the best are extremely expensive and precious)and only shared with those who come into your intimate space. Otherwise, like my mom used to say, you end up smelling like a French wh0re!

Yup - A dab will do ya!-nm

The advice I'd give my adolescent girls - - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Actually, not just girls, but my sons also. I told them that a scent is supposed to make people want to come closer, not drive them away. If you can get more than a whiff from, say, five feet away, you're wearing too much.

Good Advice! - See msg

[ In Reply To ..]
...and if for some reason they can no longer smell it from closer than 5 feet, don't use more. It means their little noses are used to it.

Heavy perfume - makes me sneeze

[ In Reply To ..]
repeatedly. Like...rapid fire.

I suppose a quick way to get the message across would be to sneeze in the direction of the offender. LOL

Here is what I do - see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
I wave a hand in front of my face, like "pheeewie." I have even said, "take a bath in perfume much?" within ear shot of the offender. Though, I suppose I'm looking for a punch in the nose if I do that.

To those of you who favor Trump and are newspaper subscribers, please look and see if George Will's column is in today's paper.  I don't think his conservative credentials can be questioned.  He is asking what DT's connections are to Putin and whether DT has business interests in Russia.  The only way we will know this is by DT releasing his personal and business tax records.  This is very important and even Trump supporters should be interested in getting ...

If posters continue to call us Tbag, Tpub or whatever I say you allow us to call them Communitsts and Nazi's (at least that is more accurate). Many people are taking great joy in insulting conservatives by calling them Tbags, Tpubs or referring to conservatives as teabaggers (then acting innocent as if they didn't know this was insulting).  This is not true.  Not all conservatives belong to the tea party.  They need to get it correct too.  If they want to refer to ...

On Another Note, Biden And McConnell's Plan Dec 31, 2012
This was before Obama's speech. BTW, according to Sen. Corker, Obama wants to pay for the sequester cuts (and have them taken out of this new legislation) with the tax increase revenue and not reduce spending cuts already agreed to and not the deficit. Again, Obama doesn't know how to add or subtract. Taking in $80 billion and spending $60 billion does not give $80 billion towards spending reduction on the debt. This story has been updated.
