The power to say NO is huge.

Posted: Nov 1, 2010

As few as 41 senators, which could represent as little as 12.3% of the U.S. population, can make a filibuster happen.  The Republicans have been using the filibuster continually, even filibustering bills they previously were FOR, just because they believe it makes Dems look bad.

The Republicans currently have 41 senators and block everything.  The Democrats have 57 senators, so by the rules they cannot override the Republican obstructionism.

They just need to talk a couple pubs or independents into voting with them, if the pubs were not already inclined to vote yes, and they have done it quite a few times.

Obstructionism - Unprecedented

[ In Reply To ..]
There has never been such a time where the filibuster was used "on a routine basis." Here is a chart of the number of times a filibuster has been used to obstruct legislation.

http://www.senate.gov/pagelayout/reference/cloture_motions/clotureCounts.htm

What has has happened is that when the Democrats obtained a small majority in the Senate, the Republicans began filibustering basically everything.

Cloture - The only procedure by which the Senate can vote to place a time limit on consideration of a bill or other matter, and thereby overcome a filibuster. Under the cloture rule (Rule XXII), the Senate may limit consideration of a pending matter to 30 additional hours, but only by vote of three-fifths of the full Senate, normally 60 votes.

Are you a died-in-the-wool democrat or what? How can you live in this economy and STILL sing the praises of what this majority democratic congress (for the past 8 years) has done? Do your homework for a change instead of watching/believing everything MSN puts on the air. You need a reality check.

Ya see, - there you go

[ In Reply To ..]
I heard on MSNBC that the Democrats have had Congress for 4 years, not eight. And they have never had a filibuster proof majority. Who is right, Fox or MSNBC? Hint: I heard that Fox doesn't do fact checking.

Sorry, but you have been mislead - You heard wrong

[ In Reply To ..]
Fox does fact checking. Think CNN does it too. MSNBC is the only one that doesn't.
You know this exactly how? - sm

Biased much? You sound ridiculous.
Well if you think watching CNN, Fox, CSPAN, local news... - see message

and reading Drudge, Huff Post, WND, Washington Post, and other various articles written by journalists in and in Europe is biased, well then yes I am. Fox checks out their stories. They just don't report willy nilly without getting the facts. AND if they ever find out they are wrong about something they come out within 24 hours and say they were wrong, and give the truth. I simply don't like MSNBC because they don't give you the full stories and their reporting is not real reporting. They interject their opinions instead of the facts. They don't have people from all sides of the political arena and on the rare occasion that they do bring in someone who is not in "their camp" they trash them, speak over them (can we say Mathews) and ridicule them. They are not fair and they don't report a story in its entirety. Just what they want to manipulate their viewers with. That's how I know. 2 years of Olberman, Mathews, and Maddow's hate was enough. Funny thing was I never thought it was hate while Bush was in office. I always thought them cutting down everything he did and calling hims stupid, etc was perfectly fine. Funny how when you learn what's really going on do you open your eyes.

When I actually see some facts - and hear the supposedly new ideas

[ In Reply To ..]
All I hear from the Republicans are statements to the effect "You have had 18 months, where are the jobs?"

That is about the same thing as saying I need to lose 30 pounds--wonderful, now where are your concrete ideas? How am I supposed to do it? And where were you 30 pounds ago? (This is a metaphor, by the way)

Its like this--things would be alot worse if I had followed the Republican diet. Things are improving with the Democrat diet.

Yes, we are definitely losing some weight with - the democrat diet

[ In Reply To ..]
Because I as a middle-class working American am in the worst financial shape I have ever been in. So, yes, the diet metaphor is great as lots have no money for food! I'm sure as many others people are not really caring what kind of charts or whatever is being produced for whichever news station you happen to watch (By the way for me is none as I work all of the time to pay bills); they care about their personal situation. I will be voting 100% Republican all the way.

We're doing much better lately.

Great! - Keep your eye on that 401K

They would love to steal it again. Too bad we had to waste the time in "recovery phase", but at least it recovered! Getting better . . .

My 401K is something of history - sm

I did well under the Bush years (before the democrats got in). Over the last 2-3 years it's just gone. I most certainly want the economy to change. It has got to get better. Any more of these past 2-3 years and I'll end up at the homeless shelter.

The country has got to get better and move forward. I don't hear anything from the democrats. Just panicking to try to save their hides and get re-elected. Their negative campaign ads are backfiring on them. They don't talk about any plans or ideas. But then again if they were doing such a great job for everyone while they were in office why is anyone even worrying, they should not have any problems, should be way ahead of the republicans (at least by 40%) and just automatically get back in. There is no hope with the democrats in.

I've been hearing a lot of really good ideas from some republicans and it looks very hopeful and I have confidence. Since the democrats have not done anything over the past 4 years it's time to let the republicans have a chance. We've got a lot of good things to look forward to with them.

I voted 100% republican all the way on my ballot.

to see it through. Since they've screwed up thus far time to find a new system. As it is there will be no SS for me when I retire. They tell me I'm not going to have anything yet they keep taking it out like thieves.

We need a better system.
Really? You going to listen to the dems trying to scare people? - Backwards Typist
[ In Reply To ..]
As far as I know, there is no talk of privatizing SS. In fact, when it was first suggested back when Bush was president, even he didn't want the whole SS deal privatized. It was up to the people collecting SS to take a % of their SS and put it in private accounts. Of course, the dems ran with "privatizing SS" and left the rest of it out. Obama is the one who started this 'rumor'.

Here's a little tidbit to look at:

Double digit unemployment, foreclosures out the kazoo, but your 401K is back where it was so who cares, right? Nevermind the rest of you, I am doing great. We can just eat cake, right? Geez. This kind of attitude is exactly why I will vote a straight Republican ticket.

With all due respect of course.
Good point - that's what I was thinking when I read it - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
But that is the problem in what I am seeing with a lot of liberals. They don't care about anyone else but themselves. As long as it doesn't affect them they don't care. That is how we got into this mess in the first place.

I want the whole country to do well. I want my family, friends, and even people I don't know to finally get back to work after being unemployed for 2 years. I want the people who are responsible for this mess to be held responsible. I want the housing industry to bounce back and manufacturing and I want a decent health care plan for all Americans.

I say the democrats have not delivered in their promises and they are clearly showing they don't care about anyone they are supposed to represent, just as long as they are set.

I say it's time to give the other side a chance to see if they can help America out of this hole we are in. It doesn't matter who got us here (except to hold them responsible), but the most important thing is how do we get out. What steps are going to be taken. Democrats have no ideas. Republicans/conservatives are at least talking about some ideas. Time to give them a chance.

But this selfish "I got mine so I don't give a rip about anyone else" attitude is one of the many problems in this country.
Congrats to you. I am very serious when I tell you I - am afraid that

my husband and I are going to have to pull from his to save our home. So, yes, I am worried about 401Ks, but I also have to worry about now. My kids have to have school clothes. We have to have food. We are a working family. This mortgage plan put in place is a joke. I am still young, and things were good for so long, it is just a shock to see what has happened in the past few years. I am just thankful that for the time being we still have the right to exercise our vote; although, if we keep in the same direction, I am not sure that the people will have any rights left.
What rights have been taken - away from you?nm

No, I didn't think so. Her words were -

"I am just thankful that for the time being we still have the right to exercise our vote; although, if we keep in the same direction, I am not sure that the people will have any rights left."

I agree with her.

It doesn't sound like you have listened to any of the republicans - see message

[ In Reply To ..]
If you would listen to some of the republicans running you would know that they have ideas (and good ones). If all you are doing is listening to the hateful fear mongers at MSNBC, then no, you would know about their ideas.

I've been listening to a lot of people I never heard of, and also didn't see what party they belonged to until after they were talking about the ideas Tom Tacredo and some guy named Ryan (forget his first name) out of Wisconsin I think. I've listened to other republicans and their ideas but I can't remember their names right now. They have a lot of ideas that are all good.

If people would stop having other people think for them and tell them how to vote, and stop spreading their hatred and fear all over MSNBC maybe you'd hear something of substance.

Today I listened to CNN and they actually surprised me and talked about the candidates and did not interject their own personal feelings (don't ask me the names of the reporters because I don't know them - there were 4 women in the field reporting).

If you don't like Fox don't listen to them, although truthfully that is where you will get the facts and you will hear both sides speak. MSNBC they are just foaming at the mouth like rabid dogs with their hatred for anyone not a liberal and you never get the truth with them.

The diet analogy is a poor analogy. Things are not improving with the democrats and tonight we'll see what percentage also does not believe that. Whether you think things are improving is your own opinion. There are many of us out here who say different. I'll agree with the other poster. The diet under the democrats must be working cos nobody has any money to buy food anymore let along pay their bills cos they are all losing their jobs under the democrat diet.

But no, things are certainly not improving under the democratic "diet".

What has improved? - sam

Obama added more to the debt in his first 1 year 9 months than Bush added in his last 4 years. If he continues at this pace your grandchildren's children will still be paying for it. How in the heck can you be okay with that??

Huge Cleaning Mess!Sep 23, 2014

House Defeats TPA By A Huge Vote.Jun 12, 2015
The vote was 302-126. The House killed a worker aid bill that was tied to the president's main agenda item -- legislation that would give Obama "fast-track" authority to negotiate trade deals. Without it, the trade push withers for now. The vote marked a stunning blow for the president at the hands of his own party, with Nancy Pelosi and labor unions helping drive the stake into the legislation in the end. The biggest defection for Obama came when Pelosi joined the rebellion in opposi ...
