OK propones to eliminate AP U.S. History

Posted: Feb 17, 2015

If you can buy into that, it is probably useless to discuss education at this point.   For one, studying the negatives of a  history is, hopefully, a way to prevent them from happening again.

We apparently should only teach "American Exceptionalism."

When, finally the Republican administrations of the past are being outed for the insurmountable harm they have done in various regions of the world, let's say the MIDDLE EAST, the good people of the U.S. have decided to try to put the genie back in the bottle!

I guess we should subscribe only to the progressive movement, huh? - sm

And teach our children to be little Nazis like the Hitler Youth?

What the heck is that even supposed to mean? - smh

Do you realize that Nazism was a form of right-wing totalitarianism? Wow.

I would like to think that we teach our children the truth...sm - VTMT

about our history, the good and the bad.

Leaving out the bad parts of history just - dooms us to repeat it.

When I was in school, for some reason the entire story about the Holocaust during WWII was "skipped". They just said, "And the Jews went to live for a while in Concentration Camps". As I kid, I would wonder, "What are they concentrating on?"

It wasn't until my SENIOR YEAR in high school that the subject was even slightly broached. Even then, no mention was made of the millions of people who were gassed.

Finally, in junior college, we learned about the mass murder of the Jews in the Holocaust.

In elementary school and junior high, the WASP kids were very mean to the Jewish kids, and I could never understand why. Had the schools taught kids the truth, and why discrimination is such an evil thing, I seriously doubt all that taunting would have occurred.

Children can handle the truth, and should be taught the truth, so they don't go making more hurtful things up on their own, like the kids at my school did.
When I was in elementary school we saw a - documentary "Night and Fog"
[ In Reply To ..]
About the concentration camps. Worse than any horror film you will ever see. Excellent and acclaimed documentary, so horrible it nearly made me sick. I think I was in 5th or 6th grade - 11-12 years old?

It was horrific and true. To this day I will not forget the lampshades made out of skin, the buckets full of gold teeth taken from the Jews when they were sent to the chambers.

I guess it was pretty shocking they did that to kids, but this was the 1960s, when the horror was not too far gone and they must have realized how important it is to make sure no one ever forgets. Sounds like with your generation they had already chosen to forget.

Not saying that Jewish children were treated much better because of it - my best friend was Jewish and she had a cross burned on her lawn in this working class neighborhood, I also witnessed black families being persecuted - but it stayed with me for years and is still with me.

When you see something like that at a young age it makes an indelible impression and I agree that young minds are capable of dealing with it, more than adult minds in a way - they are not trying to convince themselves it could never happen, they are just witnessing. I would never voluntarily watch it again I have to say though.

Now we find Christianity and "American Exceptionalism" being bundled together to justify painting American History in a positive, more patriotic light and removing anything negative. This is not only lowering standards, it borders on propaganda.

National Black Robe Movement - sm

Begins with Ken Ham, nuff said for me, but if you need more...

Separation of church and State, repeat, separation of church and state, repeat...

If you want your children to have a Christian education, cough it up and send them to Christian schools, or I would even go for voucher systems to allow "some" public funds to divert and follow a student to education of choice. Not particularly in favor of that, but it sure beats tainting the education system for everyone.

Mitts Behind Closed Doors Hot Mic Moment: Slash DOEducation, Eliminate HUDApr 16, 2012
As if standing idly by while the housing market crashes isn't enough, Romney tells big-buck donors if he had his way, he would eliminate HUD (Romney Sr was Secretary of HUD) all together, another apparent reversal of his previous multi-family/anti-sprawl policies while serving as governor of Massachusetts.  Out of sight, out of mind. Maybe he could fund bare-bones cuts to the Department of Education by moving all recipients of students loans to labor camps after graduation.& ...

Not saying this will happen this election cycle, but I just thought you all might find this bit of history as interesting as I did Incumbent presidents who have been challenged while seeking reelection: Theodore Roosevelt challenged WH Taft in 1912 - Taft wins nomination. Robert Kennedy challenged Lyndon Johnson in 1968 - Johnson decides not to run in the face of several challengers and nomination goes to Hubert Humphrey, who loses to Nixon. Ronald Reagan challenged Gerald Ford - Ford w ...

"Virginia's governor made "an unacceptable omission" by not mentioning slavery when he proclaimed it Confederate History Month, President Obama says." I think our president needs to look at the Civil War and the reason for it. The Civil War was not all about slavery. It was about State's Rights. I'll admit that slavery was a huge mistake and should not have been done.  However, slavery is NOT the most egregious stain in our history. Slaughtering the native inhabi ...

A Bit Of History On Margaret SangerOct 07, 2012
Just a little bit 'cuz I'm getting tired of doing research today.  In 1921, Sanger founded the American Birth Control League, which later became the Planned Parenthood. The mission of the clinic in Harlem was to control and help limit the African American population. In 1929, she formed the National Committee on Fe ...

Raising The Debt Limit. A Little Bit Of HistoryApr 14, 2011
After World War II ended, the debt limit was reduced to $275 billion. Because the Korean War was mostly financed by higher taxes rather than by increased debt, the limit remained at $275 billion until 1954. After 1954, the debt limit was reduced twice and increased seven times, until March 1962 when it again reached $300 billion, its level at the end of World War II. Since March 1962, Congress has enacted 74 separate measures that have altered the limit on federal debt. Time Line from 1958-2011 ...

Did Anyone Watch The History Channel The Last 2 Days?Dec 16, 2010
Third Reich:The Rise and Third Reich: The Fall.  I found it very interesting, although the filming was pretty awful with all that flashing. The films were made by the German people. The Rise was the history and reasons of how Hitler came into power. It almost parallels the conditions in the U.S. today. The Fall showed some known facts about Hitler and his armies, but it also showed how tough the German civilians had it during and after the war. I knew that Hitler got so desperate duri ...

Tx History Reminds Us They Were Dead Broke When TheyNov 13, 2012
So much for all that rugged spirit of independence. US history informs us that unilateral secession is unconstitutional without the consent of the remaining states except as a byproduct of revolution. The last time that notion took a test run, it was a costly, abysmal failure. Tx does have the option of seceding from itself via subdivision into smaller states that remain in the union. None of the above options pass muster with Governor Perry now that he is harboring fantasies of a second pre ...

Jimmy Carter, The Most Honest President In HistorySep 05, 2016
Jimmy Carter, who in my opinion is the most truly honest Christian and former president, endorsed Hillary Clinton for president: "I have known Hillary Clinton for decades. When she was a young attorney, I appointed her to the legal services corporation, where she became the first woman chair. There, Hillary fought to make sure that in our courts, those with the least were treated the same as those with the most. Since then, as you know, Hillary& ...

History: If No Last-minute Dem Shenanigan, R Wins And O Loses.Sep 20, 2012
Since Truman, no incumbent has been reelected with a poll number below 49% at this point in the election cycle.  I am omitting Bush 2, who had 48% but whose reelection ultimately had to be decided by the courts so I think you have to simply toss this election out when looking at voter trends. As a general rule, undecideds almost always break away from the incumbent, and they will surely do so in the current environment - both globally, domestically and economically - in all of which areas ...
