Mitts behind closed doors hot mic moment: Slash DOEducation, eliminate HUD

Posted: Apr 16, 2012

As if standing idly by while the housing market crashes isn't enough, Romney tells big-buck donors if he had his way, he would eliminate HUD (Romney Sr was Secretary of HUD) all together, another apparent reversal of his previous multi-family/anti-sprawl policies while serving as governor of Massachusetts.  Out of sight, out of mind.

Maybe he could fund bare-bones cuts to the Department of Education by moving all recipients of students loans to labor camps after graduation.  They could engage in some form of indentured servitude until their debt is paid in full.  The vast majority of those jobs could be working for banks and other financial institutions to make up for the revenue losses they would suffer by losing their debt speculation market/ponzi schemes.  He could always garnish teacher's paychecks to compensate for the costs incurred by high school dropouts, remedial mentoring programs, and outreach programs for the underprivileged.  Better still, we could just rely on private institutions for the wealthy, home schooling for all the riff-raff and simply eliminate public schools all together.

Obama selling out to Ruskies and Commies - Obama endless hot mike moments- want a review?

Didn't think so

Which do you prefer? Diplomacy, nonproliferation and - reduction in nuclear warheads or

[ In Reply To ..]
nuclear capitalism where nukes morph into just another commodity to be bought and sold in unregulated, unrestricted global free trade arms markets? Perhaps you'd like to see Russia come to North Korea's rescue after their most recent rocket launch disaster, so as to avoid future such embarrassments for communist countries. How about expanding their role in Iran's nuclear arms development in the Middle East or helping Pakistan beef up its technology so they can go at it with India? Whose up for a nuclear Cuban missile crisis? Anyone?

Avoiding such scenarios does not happen by the grace of God or dumb luck. For those who pay attention to the arms race, Obama's flexibility remark is nothing more than a benign statement of optimism that the election will produce an atmosphere more conducive to expanded diplomatic options and initiatives as opposed to the kill-the-bill knotheads he is dealing with this term. After he is re-elected, all the wind in their one-term-Obama sails will be gone, and they will be left with their OWN re-elections to worry about. It stands to reason his optimism in ths regard just might be justified. Obama's statement is also in line with what his policies have been all along on the arms race. No surprises, no sell-out, no scandal, nothing particularly cryptic about it.

That aside, Romney's smoke and mirrors approach to revealing his ecnomic plans to voters in an election year is quite another matter. Most voters will not be nearly as focused on foreign policy as they will be on domestic issues, so let's take this dicussion back stateside, shall we? Romney is brazenly proposing to give himself and his ilk MORE tax breaks, which he plans to pay for in part by dismantling HUD. Those directly affected would be minorities, the economically challenged, families displaced by foreclosure in need of affordable housing, and the homeless. Whattaguy, whattaguy.

Axing the Department of Education directly affects every last mother, father, son and daughter in the nation. It would place an inordinate amount of stress on (you guessed it) the middle class, working poor and unemployed seeking higher education, jobs skills training or career transition after protracted unemployment. The affects over the long term on the country's ability to compete in the global market would be far reaching and quality of life issues for future generations would be jeopardized. This is NOT a good idea.

Romney then has the gall to turn around and claim he is "worried" about the middle class. By the looks of things, he is a lot more worried about paying for those tax cuts by any means necessary, regardless of who ends up on the losing end.

Obama can't spell diplomacy - Not interested in your rambling

Hail to the Anointed One that is laughable due to its lack of any fact or basis in truth, and nothing but= smoke and mirrors. Obama is monumental failure...Carter on Steroids = Owawa. But, whatever gets you through the night. Bone up on up on your Chinese and Russian.
It's not a trick question. - Why has it thrown you into such a tizzy?
[ In Reply To ..]
and why are you unable to comment on Romney paygo onslaught on HUD and the Department of Education? You must be just like him. He thinks all he has to do is trash Obama and keep his policies and plans behind the curtain, releasing them in dribs and drabs when in the presence of megabuckaroos weilding heavy checkbooks in hand, while keeping the voters in the dark. We'll see how well that works for him as the campaign unfolds.

You seem bothered by the mere mention of diplomacy. Can't say that I blame you on that one. Romney cannot even figure out which Romney to present to his own party. God help us if he should ever be in the position to meet with world leaders.

his viewpoint on these issues. I don't understand people who have to keep up the facade of American is the greatest country in the world. It used to be, but now we are becoming a country run by corporations and greed should be our motto.
Great post. - sm

I agree. In fact, I think it takes a huge amount of hubris to continue to being the country that spreads "freedom" all over the world, whether the victim/country wants us there or not. We go in, blow away men, women, children, infrastructure, water, electricity, homes, etc. and then leave after we've literally raped said country. The best part is these countries have centuries-old cultures that we pretend to understand while we are completely clueless.

If Obama has done something well, it's how he deals with other countries. Gone is the madman known as Bush who would shoot anyone who looked at him cross-eyed. Bush has been replaced by someone who is reasonable, someone who can be trusted and respected by other countries to NOT be targeted for war. That trust and respect is now once again present, and I feel better and much safer as an American knowing that our President is on the side of EVERYONE and not just the rich.

I also couldn't agree more with your statement that we've become a country run by corporations (they're PEOPLE, for crying out loud!!), and greed should most definitely be our motto, in addition to pure hatred of those who may not be as fortunate as the very rich.

Again, thank you for your post. I enjoyed reading some common sense on this board for a change.

Did Ann send a thank you note to Hilary Rosen - for her early birthday gift?

[ In Reply To ..]
According to Miss Manners, thank-you notes should contain

(1) An expression of delight: Ann's "I loved it" covers that base.

(2) Mention of the particular present and why it caused this delight: No problem. "...for someone to be critical of me as a mother, and that was really a defining moment.

(3) Kind words about the giver along with the expression of thanks: Not so much. Instead, the Romneys copped to phoney outrage and made a spectacle out of themselves with their bifurcated version of the dignified work some, but not all, stay at home moms do.

Miss Manners never said anything about addressing thank-you notes to campaign donors instead of the individual who gave her the present. Getting only two-thirds right and failing to send the note to its proper recipient gives Ann a final grade of 66%, but since she is such a privileged person, we can bump that up on the curve to a D-.

Not really. - What gives you that idea?

[ In Reply To ..]
My post was about how the rules of proper etiquette apply to Ann Romney's early birthday gift. Nothing controversial about Ann's glee and the Romneys fake outrage since their close encounter with their donors in Florida has been made public.

They've been playing both ends against the middle ever since last week. After all, it was the conservatives who tried to milk this for all it's worth. I guess since it's turning south on them, they want to deep six the whole conversation and start calling the POTUS juvenile names and making up stuff again. Guess what? Gender politics isn't going away anytime soon.

Haven't read the board in a few days and what you just wrote - hit it right on 100%

Vicious attacks against Mrs. Romney (soon to be FLOTUS) are pretty bad. Most for no reason at all. Your post was spot on. It's really getting to them and you can see the panic mode setting in. Since I don't want either candidate I get to sit back and watch all the rabid dogs try and tear her (and him) apart. Then I laugh as I watch it backfire on them all.
