A bit of history on Margaret Sanger

Just a little bit 'cuz I'm getting tired of doing research today.

In 1921, Sanger founded the American Birth Control League, which later became the Planned Parenthood. In New York, Sanger organized the first birth control clinic staffed by all-female doctors, as well as a clinic in Harlem with an entirely African-American staff. The mission of the clinic in Harlem was to control and help limit the African American population. In 1929, she formed the National Committee on Federal Legislation for Birth Control, which served as the focal point of her lobbying efforts to legalize contraception in the United States. From 1952 to 1959, Sanger served as president of the International Planned Parenthood Federation. She died in 1966, and is widely regarded as a founder of the modern birth control movement.

My comment on the above highlighted words: Of all the articles I read, most stated she wanted to destroy the "Negro" race but, as usual, some of her quotes were taken out of context.

In addition, Sanger believed the responsibility for birth control should remain in the hands of able-minded individual parents rather than the state, and that self-determining motherhood was the only unshakable foundation for racial betterment.

The Handicapped are Human Waste: wrote that the handicapped, including the "blind, deaf, dumb, mute and epileptics," were the "dead weight of human waste" in her book Pivot of Civilization.

One link was a "short" while the other link was the whole interview at another site. So, whichever one you watched, use the other link if you want the whole interview (also complete with the Phillip Morris commercial-lol).

I was just thrilled to find this interview and listening to it because it was in her own words and not some newspaper and/or blogger giving their opinion.

Funny thing is, before the Comstock Act era, we had no laws - against abortion and birth control. Pregnancy

and birth were very dangerous, the agricultural age required high birth rates to deal with farm work, most religions did not allow women to say no to their husbands, and the practical issues of dealing with those dread realities, as well as the usual practical issues, were left to the individuals.

(I have never read a study of how many women had such fear of this that it blighted and shaped their lives (the old maid daughter, some who became nuns,...wives), but it must have been reality for many. Everyone would have personally been acquainted with someone who died from these causes, some several. Just think how many people suffering from anxiety we see in ERs today.)

The first laws taking control of this were actually pushed by physicians who wanted to get the business handled by midwives and other nonphysicians. Not entirely for venal reasons. Many women and babies died horrible deaths at the hands of incompetents.

(Oh, the racism? Yes, consider the era. This time last century, those who promoted genuine equality between races were still rather strange birds.)

Link below to very interesting little article. Ms. Sanger was one of 11 children and blamed childbearing (and her father) for her mother's ruined health and death from TB.

But that woman died almost 50 years ago, and Planned Parenthood does not share those beliefs.

This law was enacted in 1994. It was expanded in 2006/2007. For a lot more information, you should look up Chapter 119, title 18 of the U.S. Code. Since Truman, no incumbent has been reelected with a poll number below 49% at this point in the election cycle.
