Montana Senate votes for bill to eliminate 3rd

Posted: Apr 6, 2013

The bill will be brought to the voters.  Montana Senate is Republican majority.

"HELENA, Mont (Reuters) - Over loud objections from Democrats, Montana's Republican-controlled Senate on Friday voted to put proposals on the 2014 ballot that would tighten voter registration and restrict the rights of third parties to compete in general elections.

The measures, which are expected to be approved by the Republican-majority House, do not need approval from the Democratic governor. They would go before Montana voters in November of next year.

Democrats tried to stall action on the bills through a rarely used parliamentary procedure, demanding that the vote be delayed until a missing Democratic senator was found and brought into the chamber.

But Republicans moved forward anyway, prompting Democrats to leap to their feet, shout objections and pound on their desks with everything from coffee mugs to copies of the Montana constitution.

"We did what we had to do and it's done," said Senate Majority Leader Art Wittich.

"I'm saddened by what we saw today - it's worse than Washington, D.C.," Governor Steve Bullock said. "I'm not embarrassed by men and women demanding a right to speak - I'm disappointed by those who denied it."

The measures would ask voters to eliminate same-day voter registration, and put in place a new primary election system that only allows the two political parties that get the most votes in the primaries to be on the ballot in the general election.

Both are seen as benefiting Republicans. Third parties have acted as spoilers for some Republican candidates in recent elections. Same-day voter registration is considered a plus for Democrats.

Any ballot-measure bills that pass the Montana Legislature with a simple majority of both chambers move right to a public vote, bypassing the governor's office."

Conservatives have psyched themselves into - believing that winning at any cost,

[ In Reply To ..]
is justified, no sacrifice of principles, constitution, decency, democracy, our very republic too great.

After all, they and their heroic efforts are all that stand between our nation and the abyss. All that stand between our nation and the evil Democrats who are determined to destroy all that is good through our evil agendas.

Conservatives, don't miss my own post on on your leaders' noble attempts to "save the American farmer" by fighting FOR vicious cruelty to millions of animals each year. Atrocity isn't atrocity if it's done by the right people.

Proud? Not? Just maybe you need to stand up for what you were raised to believe in? How'd it come about that THESE are the people you empower with your votes? I'm sure you didn't intend that in the beginning.

winning at any cost - promtime

It's not the American "family" farmer, the few who exist in this country anymore, who treat the creatures with such cruelty. Yes, they are pretty much raised as food, and yes, they have to be contained to a certain degree to protect them from predators and, yes, I've put up 50 chickens in a weekend, but they were chickens that pretty much had the run of the place. It's the corporate farms that commit the atrocities. Not to mention they are shot full of antibiotics and raised on genetically modified grains and who knows what else. In any event, I stopped eating anything with a face years and years ago. At any rate, it's like telling the jury to disregard that last statement, the evidence is out, more and more people are becoming aware of the evils of "the corporation" from robbing from the poor to give to the rich right down to feeding your family carcinogens. The only way we are going to stop them is hit them in the pocketbook . . . seek always the truth and make informed choices.

Winning at any cost is the dems MO - sm

We've seen it election after election after election. This last one was particularly the worse. Throw out the military votes (who have proven to be most conservatives), heck if 2 old ladies can just dump ballots in the garbage from conservative areas why not. Then you've got the vote twice, vote often, or like the one lady said she voted over 20 times. Internet voting, oh yeah, no voter fraud there - wink, wink.

win at any cost - that's the dems motto.

Throwing out the military votes. Are you referencing the fake - blog posted here

[ In Reply To ..]
after the election that was just an essay?

Regarding your other examples, do you have concrete documentation? Please cite if so.

The fact that the Montana senate is trying to eliminate the 3rd party that benefits the Republicans, and that they also want to eliminate same-day registration are hard facts that they don't have enough confidence in their party to win on equal ground. So they have to resort to trying to make law to win at any cost This is public record.

You have no public record. You have blogs and opinion pages and lies.

The Montana record is not a blog, not an opinion, it is fact.

Why not let people register the day they vote? Those ballots are provisional anyhow, so everything is verified on the other side by nonpartisan agencies, thrown out if invalid. So what's the big deal?

Eliminate third party candidates is quite revealing and definitely a sign the Republicans are scared to the point of desperation.

SM, the GOP worked to throw out the military vote, - which trends mod/lib because of young age.nm

I suspect the Dems will take it to the Supreme Court if necessary, as well they should.

The voters of Montana get a shot at it first. Let's hope they - get it right (nm)

Dems Lack 60 Votes In Senate Feb 14, 2013
Good! Republican leaders in the Senate have told Senate Democrats they will withhold enough votes to prevent a 60-vote majority that would end debate on Hagel and allow a final vote, according to a Senate Democratic leadership aide. The move means Hagel will not be confirmed until at least after the Presidents Day recess, and that he will not be able to travel to a NATO meeting next week where the Afghanistan war will be discussed. Retiring Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has pledged ...

Senate Health Bill - 1502 pages   "It's important to remember that the bill won't exist in this form for long. Senate Majority Leader Reid and Sens. The behind-closed-doors dealings have drawn criticism from Republicans, particularly because President Obama had promised a transparent process and ...

Senate Blocks VA Accountability BillMay 24, 2014
It's going to a committee. Why? Do they really need to study this bill? It's very simple. Why this bill should become law: The bill would give the VA Secretary greater authority to fire employees and remove them from SES service due to poor performance in the same manner a Member of Congress can remove a member of their staff. The bill would require the VA Secretary to give the Senate and House Veterans’ Affairs Committees notice of removal within 30 days of removing an indi ...

In its broad sweep, the massive bill would touch Wall Street CEOs and first-time homebuyers, high-flying traders and small town lenders. T ...

By Daniel TencerThursday, January 21st, 2010 -- 2:29 pm Dems mull reconciliation to push through reforms: report House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi says there aren't enough votes in the House to pass the Senate version of health reform, but what that means for the future of health reform is far from clear. Senate Passed Financial Reform Bill About An Hour AgoJul 15, 2010
I must go look at it now that it passed. There were stipulations that didn't rein in Wall Street but one article I read stated it does that.   "The Senate passed the financial overhaul package in a final vote Thursday, ending more than a year of wrangling over the shape of the landmark legislation. The focus now shifts to the monumental task of implementing the new regulations over coming weeks and months. The 60 to 39 decision came just before 3 p.m, only a few hours after Democr ...

What? Health Care Countdown: Senate Bill Could Hit Middle Class HardJan 04, 2010
In fact, the Senate is counting on raising $120 billion in new taxes over the next 10 years, the majority of which will come from the middle class. Another $30 billion is expected to roll in from the actual tax on insurance plans, but far more comes from wages. "This is a big tax on the middle class," said Douglas Holtz-Eakin, former director of the Congressional Budget Office, noting that 95 percent of people with the so-called Cadillac plans make under $250,000.
