Not saying this will happen this election cycle, but I just thought you all might find this bit of history as interesting as I did
Incumbent presidents who have been challenged while seeking reelection:
Theodore Roosevelt challenged WH Taft in 1912 - Taft wins nomination.
Robert Kennedy challenged Lyndon Johnson in 1968 - Johnson decides not to run in the face of several challengers and nomination goes to Hubert Humphrey, who loses to Nixon.
Ronald Reagan challenged Gerald Ford - Ford won nomination, but loses to Carter.
Teddy Kennedy challenged Jimmy Carter in 1980 - Carter wins nomination, but loses to Reagan.
Pat Buchanan challenged HW Bush in 1992 - Bush wins nomination, but loses to Bill Clinton.
Going back even further:
Millard Fillmore challenged by Winfield Scott in 1852, who wins nomination, but loses to Franklin Pierce.
Franklin Pierce challenged by James Buchanan in 1856, who wins nominiation and presidency.
James Buchanan challenged by Stephen Douglas in 1860, who wins nomination, but loses to Abraham Lincoln.
Andrew Johnson ended up running for president as an independent after his break with the democratic party and loses to US Grant.
