One fatality in California from tsunami, 2 others injured. What were they doing?? Taking pictures!! Really, come on people, did we not learn anything from watching the pictures of the tsunami that hit Indonesia? You can't run from water that is traveling that fast and there is nowhere to hide.

After all the warnings, all the incredible videos available online showing real tsunamis happening in Japan, Indonesia, etc., and past tsunamis in Crescent City, you would THINK that standing in front of one to take a picture would be the last thing any intelligent person would do. These people were obviously part of the herd that Mother Nature was culling from the gene pool.

Even shallow water, when moving fast, can knock you off your feet and sweep you out to sea (or downstream in a flash flood, or off the edge of a waterfall, which happens on occasion in Yosemite and Yellowstone). Getting snatched by the ocean happens all the time on the West Coast. Usually it's a rogue wave or a rip tide that does it.

But to have 7 hours' warning, and knowing it's coming, to still think it's safe to try to get up close and personal pics is too stupid to be believed. I was also surprised to see people standing so close to the water in Santa Cruz Harbor when the waves started coming in, because once they get into a contained space like that, they start bouncing around, and it's anyone's guess as to what they might do, or which direction they might go.

I think California dodged a bullet yesterday, because when the tsunami arrived, it was low tide.

I'd laugh about it myself. And if I managed to remove myself from the gene pool in a similarly idiotic manner, I would deserve to be ridiculed. Misplaced sympathy just encourages others to emulate foolish behavior.

If people don't want other people to laugh at them, they're gonna need to stop behaving like idiots. Until they do, we're all better off if they don't survive to breed.

Some may think I'm being insensitive, but I have to admit that when I first heard of this, the first thought that came to mind was Darwin's theory of natural selection.

Then I felt bad - it's such a senseless death and shouldn't have happened.

These women had no say in where they were or who they were with, did they? I think I read that the youngest wife was 'gifted' to him. I hope they are treated well.
