Obama tells intelligence chiefs to draw up cyber target list – full document text

Eighteen-page presidential memo reveals how Barack Obama has ordered intelligence officials to draw up a list of potential overseas targets for US cyber attacks.

Funny...I see NO date, NO signature on this document. Weird? Also, it's supposedly TOP SECRET, so how did the Guardian get its hands on it?

There has to be a leak... - ZvilleMT

somewhere way, way up in the WH staff. I'm wondering that if they ever find out who it is, will it ever be made public? I mean, depending on how you view the leaks, this person could be held up as a hero instead of a villain.

Oh, you betcha!! The republicans will hail this - sm

person as hero of the year!!!

It will frustrate me if the person winds up being a leftover from the Bush years.

Obama should have gotten rid of each and every one of Bush's hires, appointments, etc. in order to completely wipe Bush off the map of the Obama presidency.

Instead, it has felt for a long time now that there's sort of a "shadow government" running this country, and it has felt very, very disturbing.

For not getting rid of them, I blame Obama!

On a personal note, I'm glad that Obama is using as much information as he can in order to prevent future terror attacks in this country. Why is it that the Rs on this board aren't feeling safer BECAUSE of his contributions to Bush's policy.

Left on his own, with no "interference" from the RW, I believe he can keep us safe. I also believe if he does, the Rs won't stand for it!!

What Obama should have done... - ZvilleMT

was overturned the Patriot Act. First it was only certain phone numbers and certain information being tracked, next it was all phone lines, all internet activity being tracked, next it's ... Where do we draw the line in the name of national security? Have we now become a country of suspects instead of citizens?
ahhh...so that's how Reps justify blaming Obama. It was okay for Bush to create - a country of suspects...
[ In Reply To ..]
So Obama should have righted that wrong by overturning the Patriot Act. Would he even have the authority to do that? OMG I can only imagine what the Reps would have charged/accused Obama of had he tried.

No, not okay for Bush to do that... - ZvilleMT
[ In Reply To ..]
and I've been saying so since 2001, but candidate Obama said he would overturn it - then he didn't. I blame Bush for starting the whole thing, but I blame Obama for not only continuing it, but expanding on it. And you know what? Sc*#w any of the reps that would have accused Obama of anything except doing the right thing if he had overturned it! Since Bush didn't do the right thing and used our fear of 9/11 to enact the Patriot Act (patriot, indeed!), Obama should have done the right thing in getting rid of it and forget anyone telling him differently!

I'm so sick of the blame game! I just wish someone would step up and do what's right for the country and not what's right for their party. Just for once!!
Okay, but realistically Obama trying to disappear the PA would not have - been well received

I totally agree with your last line, but that will never happen. Just too many lines have been drawn starting with the declaration to make Obama a 1-term president.
I realize lines have been drawn, but... - ZvilleMT

all it takes is one person doing what's right to make a difference, at least for those of us in the real world (i.e. not congress). Bush did a lot of things I was disappointed in (downright ticked off, actually), but Obama at least could have gained some respect from some on the right and most of us independents if he had made the PA disappear.

What worries me now is what the government will do with this information now that they have it. I'm not saying Obama will do anything nefarious with it, but what about the next administration or the administration after that? And we would most likely never know. If not for this tremendous leak, we wouldn't know about it going this far!
the real world - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I agree in theory with a lot of what you said. However, the liability would have been too great if Obama got rid of PA. If there was a terrorist attack it would be blamed on Obama for getting rid of the PA. That would have worked out perfect for the right. He only would have gained respect from the right because that would leave the door wide open for him to be blamed for a crisis.

An example of one person (Obama) standing up for what's right and a reflection of what the majority of Americans thought was right was advocating for stricter gun safety. I'm not trying to hijack or change the subject, but the real world is unfortunately not an idealistic "all it takes is one" to make a difference. You would think the massacre of children would be enough to make a difference but it didn't.

Yes, I'm cynical. One person makes no difference in a complicated real world.
The republicans on this board are out of touch - sm

with their leaders, since many reasonable, sensible, SANE republicans are lauding this program as being absolutely necessary in order to avoid terror attacks.

Obviously, some republicans on this board would prefer a deadly terror attack on innocent Americans to Obama's success in protecting innocent Americans.

They can spy on me all they want. Trust me! They will be bored to death if they do. If the cost of my absolute freedom is in jeopardy, I'll gladly trade that because I'm pro-life about the American citizens who are already ALIVE!!

It's kind of big news, since it's the ONLY level of bipartianship that the republicans have been willing to engage in under this President.

He's the bigger problem. He has thumbed his nose at our country's laws and followed his own agenda.

Truthfully, Obama had made his own problems by keeping this guy around, along with some of the other officials that don't have any idea on how to run a country.

Guardian, just google "Bush warrantless wiretapping," and you will find LOTS and LOTS of sites that will report the same story.

Actually, the reason I used The Guardian's article to begin with was because of the discussion of last week (or two weeks ago, whatever) about how much the republicans on this board like foreign news.

In other words, I did it so that people just like you wouldn't question the source. Of course, when the shoe is on the other foot and it prints something bad about OBAMA, it's a very legitimate source, no?

Sheesh!

You evidently ignored the footnotes on Page 3 - sm
